I decided to watch the new version of 90210 only because I was a huge fan of the original show back in the 90's.

Before I even start, I have to tell you Rob Estes is still gorgeous.

I sat down to watch the show and I had no problem UNTIL...well, until I saw Dixon sitting in the back seat of the Wilson's car. I liked Tristan Wilds in "The Wire" and it's nice to see him on another show. Anyway....when I hear "Beverly Hills" I think of rich white folk. So, it's because of this that I spent the whole two hours scanning the students and citizens in the background shots for evidence of OTHER black people in Beverly Hills. I looked and I didn't see any. At Naomi's birthday party, I didn't see any other black students. While Dixon was welcome without any problem (I don't count the scuffle he had during tryouts...) I find that so hard to believe because as far as I could see...THERE WERE NO OTHER BLACK STUDENTS.

Now, I realize I've been known to be blind even if something is standing right in front of me, which is why I didn't erase the first episode and I'm planning to re-watch it again on Monday night. I'm sure that in my quest to find more black people on the show, I probably missed other stuff pertinent to the story.

Now, you may want to know why I even care about the black population on the show. I don't have problem with a black character on any TV show, in fact, the more minorities on a TV show, the better. In my world, there are a potpourri of people so I've grown up with all kinds of folks. No problem there. I also admit I have never been to Beverly Hills and my knowledge of Beverly Hills comes from watching the original 90210. I have no desire to go to Beverly Hills ever, no offense but I have a list of destinations I must visit before I die and if I were to put BH on it, I doubt I would get to it. But one never knows where life takes you so I may end up there one day....According to Wikipedia, 80.06% of the BH population is white/caucasian, 9.05% Asian, 4.63% Latino/Hispanic, 1.77% black, 1.50% "other", and 0.13% native American.

MY problem with having Dixon on the show is that the creators of the show should have at the very least had a few other black students roaming the halls of the school or at Naomi's party. Like I said, I may have missed someone so I'm going to watch again. In case anyone else spotted another black citizen, can you please tell me where?!

Re: your blog title, it's 90210, not 90201. But anyway, re: your problem with Dixon being the only minority, well, at least they have minorities in this version. In the original 90210, there were no regular minority students at all. Here, they not only have Dixon, but they also have Navid, who's of Indian or Middle Eastern decent.

Thanks about the title...I saw that but was too lazy to fix it...I did it now though. I must have missed Navid..I don't remember him. The original had zero minorites and that was fine...this one has 2 but there are no others. They couldn't have placed a few other black or Indian faces in the crowds? I know I'm being picky but I look for these things. I hate "token" minorities in TV shows. At the same time, when I watch a "black" sitcom/show, I'd make the same argument about 1 white neighbor or whatever...no token minorities or whites please!

Well seems like the original is always going to outdo even the new ones. It is rare for the new show to outdo the original.

For the most part I liked the first 2 hrs of this show. I've not yet felt that "90210 feel" but I think in time it'll feel like the old one. Of course it'll never be the original; but if it's done right, it might be really really close to being almost as good...LOL...

well i agree with your post. BHH has black students, not that many but more than one if you look online. I also don't get why is it that you can have a tv show and an all white cast and it's not labeled a whtie show? It's just a show. but if you have a all hispanic cast then it's a hispanic show or if you have an all black cast then it's a black show. I don't get it. Same for movies! I'm black and I watch a lot of shows with mostly whites on it, but people accept it as the norm and all races watch those shows. But for some reason shows featuring mostly minorites are immediately classified as some kinda of niche show. Same for movies. I think that anyone can identify with Tyler Perry movies for instance. I just don't understand why most white people avoid all minority tv shows or movies. I don't/can't avoid watching shows where I don't see at least one black female on it. There needs to be more diversity and people need to branch out more.
