Alright, so I've played about 1/4 of MGS4, and really enjoyed it. I'm muy awful at shooters, and even some action titles, but really dug the corny over the top story, characters, and coolio visuals. Gameplay is decent, and fun, and thankfully, pretty easy even on "normal" difficulty.

I don't get a lot of time on my PS3 (easier to hang w/ my wife playing on the laptop, PSP, DS...), so I figured I'd spend some quality time w/ the original, playing it on my PSP. Well, I immdiately got annoyed with the controls, and the heavier emphasis on stealth (I'm way too impatient for that!). After about 4 or 5 hours, I bailed on it. Instead, I picked up MGS2 for PS2 and PC. Tried the PC version (ironically, using a PS3 controller...), and it was the same bag. The camera controls, sluggish aiming, control quirks (heaven forbid I should be able to walk/run AND reload at the same time) drove me BATTY. I got barely an hour into it (the first "boss" where you're shooting darts at the Russian woman), and after many fits of aiming the dambed gun ver...y...slow...ly..., not being always able to dodge her grenades because Silly Snake is reloading and standing there like a bumpus while doing so... etc. I just said "ta heck with this".

So yeah, I'll give MGS3 a go on the PS2. But it begs the question... why were the first two a no-go for me?

1. I suk... I'm too much of an old, soft, Xbox hugging, RPG playing, American doofus to ever have a shot at a game requiring the finesse and providing the challenge of MGS...

2. MGS4 is just that much better than 1 & 2 ... Looks great, controls work like I would expect, Snake moves more or less as I would like, etc.

Please be gentle...

Before MGS3, I think I'll step back and play the new Monkey Island chapter...

I see where you're coming from. I also played MGS4 before any of the others, and it's a drastically different experience from games one and two. I had trouble with the first one just because of its age, but thankfully it was pretty short. At four or five hours in you're already halfway done -- I'd go ahead and finish it, if I were you. MGS2 is a substantial improvement, thanks to much more variety in terms of what you can do. I can understand why you might not dig MGS1, but MGS2, at least in my opinion, is a much more accessible game.

But the real pinnacle of the series is, without a doubt, MGS3. The camera is fixed to a third person perspective instead of the troubling overhead view, and it works wonders. You still have to switch to first person view to shoot, which is enough of a hassle that you'll use the (thanks to the new camera, wonderfully intuitive) stealth mechanics.

I'm in the same boat as you.

I've played #2 and #4. I couldn't stand #2, but I really enjoyed #4. Mind you, stealth isn't really my cup of tea anyway.

@bluej33: Alright, you've managed to get my attention with MGS3-- thanks. Just going to a non-overhead view is money in the bank. The idea of a stealth game where I can't see what my guy is seeing (at least, not while moving...) felt really weird. I can certainly see where it was cutting edge for the day, though. That's what 1/2 are probably missing to push me through: nostalgia... since I didn't play them until now, I have no real "feelings" for them...

@barkera0: Yeah, that's where my comments really aren't fair, or even make sense... I've never been a stealth gamer.

I haven't playes any of the MG games, but I hear ya on being old and liking rpg's. Weird button combo's really throw me in games. I'm making a go at some action and shooter games, but I won't play them if I get confused. That's no fun at all.

@ tprezzy12: Ditto! Quick Time Events, complex use of multiple sticks... too much. Of course, then my console playing friends point out some of the PC games that I play that use 2/3rds of the keyboard... ;-)

MGS3 is the best this series has to offer. Real grown up content is mixed in with the usual comic book spoof of a story line. Even as a fan I'd have to get reacquainted with the control scheme. Just remember: When you go into the onscreen item menus, time stops. It's silly that I didn't realize it sooner, but I did get flustered early and often until "the light bulb went on".

@eggmcmuff: Being a forever-noob at actioners, I 100% get the "flustered" mode in the menus. Thanks for the tip. I should be digging into MGS3 soon. Trying to polish off a couple of other titles first.

I'd go with 2.

Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 are great games and all but they don't compare to 4 despite this. Hipocritically though, I have a soft spot for the first two games - nostalgia being the case as to why that is.

@loopy_101 I can see why people like 1/2, but that top down view drove me bonkers. I realize, though, that the overhead view is good for a stealth game, whereas I was mistakenly trying to play them like shooters.
