Last night I was tootling around on YouTube, watching videos for the J-pops that I don't get to listen to so much any more. Then I wandered into '80s territory, watching the videos for Pop! Goes My Heart from Music & Lyrics... just a model of '80s music, even though, technically, it's not. My question on this video is this: whose butt is whose?
I love this video, really, I do. That 'motorcycle move' thing that they do is priceless.
That then led me to watching some ~real~ '80s stuff, like When In Rome's The Promise, and Modern English's Melt With You, as well as the always fantastic Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode, back when Vince Clarke was with them. This video is the one that the Music & Lyrics one reminds me of. From there, I moved on to other Vince Clarke stuff, including the definitively fun Take A Chance On Me with Vince and Andy Bell in full ABBA drag.
But then it happened... I typed a band name into the search box, and I was completely surprised at the number of results. I clicked on this one and then just sat there, in shock and awe...
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Wooooooooooooooooooooodddddddddddddddddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!
I don't think I was breathing. Really. The Bay City Rollers. I haven't seen them, heard of them, thought of them in ages. But there they were, just as I remembered them. And I ~do~ remember them.... every word, evidently, as I sat there singing along to Rock 'n Roll Love Letter, which I haven't heard in a good 30 years or so... let's see... 2008 - 1976 = yup, 32.
Wooooooooooooooooooooodddddddddddddddddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!
Okay, originally, I was a Derek fan, but then switched my allegiance over to Woody, the bass player. Don't know why. Don't know why Eric's soulful baby blues didn't do anything for me, either.
And then, the song... oh, my. Wouldn't You Like It?... only available on an import disc from the UK that I saved my money to buy. The raw sexuality of it all... and I remember every word. And, of course, who could forget the one that started it all, SATURDAY Night.
I don't think I've started breathing yet. How can I? I remember buying 16 Magazine, and reading all the latest on them. The first concert I ever went to was when the BCR played at the CNE in Toronto, and I made my friend go with me... we screamed ourselves hoarse. I remember when Allan quit the group, and Ian took his place. Then Ian quit, and Pat replaced him, but by that time, their star was waning. And then someone broke into our house and stole all our records, including all my BCR albums, and when we got the insurance money, I didn't replace them.
Watching the videos again really takes me back. And, you know, they weren't so bad, really. The songs are catchy, Les was a good singer, and hey, everybody needs a little plaid in their lives!

How odd... I was out with my sister yesterday. When I got in the car, she was playing the local "oldies" station (music from the 60s, 70s and 80s... I can't believe they dropped the 50s from the mix!). David Bowie's Let's Dance was playing. Not one of my all time favorite Bowie songs, but pretty much anything Bowie is fine with me. Anyway, they followed up Let's Dance with Saturday Night. Not two songs I would have put back-to-back.

I missed 80's music when it was on the radio. I was in my classical music phase--only listening to classical music. Do you go through music phases?

It'd be nice to see more pre-MTV videos, or ones from the 80's for songs that never made it to that network. I'm sure everyone's seen the Madonna videos way too many times, but seeing an old unplayed video from The Cure from a Greatest Hits collection is rather cool.

The Bay City Rollers' music played a big part in last night's October Road.

cdrak: CTV keeps moving October Road all over the schedule, it's there, it's not, ...so I haven't seen that many episodes. (Donna from That 70s Show is in it...)
sesho: I had my classical phase while I was in university!
Kimba: Ted Nugent's Wango Tango always makes me want to roller skate!
Angus: Yes, that's one reason why I was so surprised at the number of videos there on the BCR... from tv shows and whatnot. They didn't have music videos back in the day...
And one more time:
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
Woooooooodddddddyyyyyyyy!!!!!!

Lol. Old flashbacks are crazy sometimes. When we were in LA we met some guy who created Legends of the Hidden Temple, a horrible gameshow on Nickelodeon. But we grew up on it and all thought it was the best thing ever. One of us even dressed up as a Blue Barracuda (one of the teams that competed in the gameshow) for Halloween once hahaha. Needless to say, we all thought this guy was pretty much the coolest person ever.

I saw the Bay City Rollers live in 2005!
Can't beat some of those older songs!

I've had to visit youtube too many times for music videos. It stinks that they are so blurry!
