It's rather long, so bear with me. I just had a few thoughts about the future of each of these consoles as this year progresses... needless to say it's overall-positive on all fronts
Happy gaming and I hope you glean something of value if you choose to read this!
Wii
It is my personal belief that everyone in the world, regardless of age, color, citizenship, or even political affiliation should own a Wii. It's great for age Tot to Young-At-Heart, and it offers a gameplay experience unlike any we've seen before. I have an elaborate story about my acquisition of my Wii back in November 06 if you'd like to give it a read on my Gamespot profile - http://www.gamespot.com/users/Staryoshi87/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-24784773
As of right now I have The Legend of Zelda (Greatest Zelda so far? Not quite, but right behind Ocarina of Time), Excite Truck - Simple but highly entertaining racer, Super Paper Mario - Mario + Platforming + RPG elements = Hugz Tiem, Super Mario Galaxy - Easily the greatest and most innovative platformer ever conceived.... with amazing graphics that show the Wii's true strength, and most recently Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure - A critically acclaimed but oft overlooked gem of a puzzle/adventure game riddled with cel-shaded cuteness. Hell, just for Wii Sports alone it's worth it to pick up a Wii (there's nothing like watching your grandparents bowl with a Wiimote... and actually enjoy gaming!)
The future is bright for our young lad Wii, and as long as you avoid the plethora of Wii-ports and stick to the good stuff, you'll have levels of fun you didn't think were possible to achieve by simply waving your arm around and pressing buttons from time to time.
Here's my "most anticipated" list for the Wii in 2008:
Super Smash Bros Brawl 3/9
No More Heroes 1/22
Mario Kart Wii Q2
Wii Fit TBA
Wii Music Orchestra TBA
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles TBA
Endless Ocean 1/21
Dragon Quest Swords 2/26
Tales of Symphonia TBA
Okami 3/25
The first game listed, Smash, is reason enough to buy a Wii in my opinion. It features everything great about the previous two iterations of the series - infinitely deep gameplay, amazing friend on friend action, nintendo characters - and adds a few new additions of its own: new items, characters, stages, gameplay elements, and most dramatic of all.... FOUR PLAYER ONLINE PLAY ZOMG!!1! No more heroes has a certain "it's cool to be different" thing going on or something, I don't know, but I like it. Mario Kart is... Mario Kart, so that's on the list. And then there's Wii Fit, which will help to whip my fat gamer ass into shape All in all I think the Wii is something that shouldn't be overlooked or underestimated. If you can't buy one, at least try it once, you won't regret it.
360
While the PS3 is offering a staggeringly impressive number of quality exclusives this year, the 360 is not without its big guns, too. The list of quality multiplatform games is HUGE this year, so you really can't go wrong either way. Feel free to use this thread as a discussion for all things 360.
I'll start with the games that I'm watching due in 2008:
Alan Wake TBA
Fable 2 TBA
Lost Odyssey 2/12
Infinite Undiscovery TBA
Spectral Force 3 3/25
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction Q2
Ninja Gaiden II TBA
Too Human Q2
Cry On TBA
Warhound TBA
It's a smaller list than that of my PS3, but it's got some quality titles nonetheless. I'm particularly interested in The first 4 games listed there.
Alan Wake looks to be a suspense/horror action game with a solid story and beautiful graphics. Fable 2 is building off of Fable 1 and "biggie-sizing" it. You even a) get a dog and b) can knock chicks up. How fun is that? Oh, and you get a gun, too. Lost Odyssey is a solid-looking JRPG with a strong cast of developers and a lengthy, CG riddled experience (I think it's on multiple discs, too). And then there's Infinite Undiscovery, which is under the wing of Square-Enix... I think that's enough to warrant a close look, eh?
Like I said earlier, multiplats are running wild this year, and aside from achievements (some ps3 games are implementing them as well), there shouldn't be too much of a difference between either platform.
I'm finding myself playing Mass Effect (already beat it twice, but it's just so good!
) and Medal of Honor: Airborne right now... I'm going to return MoH though (bought it used = free 6 day rental) and put it towards no more heroes or another game.
PS3
Where to start? I just bought a PS3 about 2 weeks ago. That's right, I finally gave in to my gaming urges
Ratchet and Clank is what finally pushed me to buying a PS3. I have it on the PSP and it just looked so vivid and fun from what I saw, I couldn't pass it up... and I'm glad I didn't. I recently picked up Resistance and Assassin's Creed (I had played AC on the 360 and wasn't really a fan, but for $30 I decided to give it another shot), so my collection has expanded beyond one measely game. I went with the 40gb model due to my definitive lack of PS2 games (destroyed my PS2 (for fun) a while back when it stopped reading discs and got rid of all my ps2 games, so BC wasn't an issue). I recently bought a 120gb hdd to accomodate any future gaming, music, movie, linux, etc needs that I may have. I am absolutely awed by Blu Ray high def movies. Spiderman 3 and Kingdom of Heaven were both stunning, and although I'm not much of a movie-watcher, Blu Ray was a selling point for me.
In my opinion the scale is starting to tip in favor of the PS3 (over the 360) this year. If not in terms of sales and general consumer feelings, then in my own heart at least. There are simply more exclusives that interest me on the PS3 and the superiority of Blu Ray discs compared to DL DVDs is really becoming apparent. It's just much more versatile than a 360. Multiplats still lean toward the 360 for me due to better optimization and achievement points, but games like the upcoming Burnout Paradise and Devil May Cry (which feature in-game, visible achievements and hdd-caching respectively) are starting to tip that scale. If someone came up to me and asked "should I buy a PS3 or a 360?" I would honestly answer PS3. This isn't a slight of the 360 in any way, it's more a compliment to the PS3. I had consistently refused to acknowledge the merits of the PS3 until around December, and I feel rightfully so, but I have since done a 360 (pun
) on that mindset and feel oppositely.
Here are a list of PS3 exclusives (most due out in 200
that I am personally interested in. I won't buy them all, but I'll track most of them
LA Noire TBA
Resistance 2 TBA
Final Fantasy XIII TBA
Little Big Planet Q3
God of War III TBA
MLB 08: The Show 3/4
Haze 3/18
Metal Gear Solid 4 Q2
Tekken 6 TBA
The Agency TBA
Playstation Home Q2
Killzone 2 TBA
Infamous TBA
The Agency TBA
Star Ocean 4 TBA
White Knight Chronicles TBA
Afrika TBA
Hot Shots Golf 5 Q1
Eight Days TBA
Heavy Rain TBA
Senjou No Valkyria TBA
The Getaway TBA
Coded Arms Assault TBA
Fl0wer TBA
Dues Ex 3 TBA
LA Noire and Resistance 2 stand out as games that have the potential to be REALLY special in my opinion. I'm hoping that LA Noire will capture the gritty, noir detective story that I've been longing for in a game while successfully recreating the jazz-imbued time period in which the game takes place. If this game features a story to back up the atmosphere it looks to be setting, I'll be more than satisfied. And then there's Resistance. Oh my gosh where can I even start with that. As if establishing an alternate reality version of the 1950's in which WW2 was pre-empted by (alien? haven't played much of the game yet) mutagenic diseases that decimate most of the human population, it now claims to offer 60 player multiplayer and an 8 player co-op campaign in addition to one for those of us who want a solitary experience, and we've got a system seller, to say the least. The future of both the PS3 and Blu Ray looks bright, and I'm glad to be able to say "Yes, I own a PS3, why don't you?" ![]()
Ok, this is the end of my long-winded chat about games in 2008. I know that I didn't address the PC, DS, or PSP, but it's late and I'm tired of typing
Perhaps I'll issue an adendum later that accomplishes such a goal. I hope you guys found something of value in what I had to say, and I guess the overall theme of it is this: each system has its strengths, and it comes down to a matter of personal taste as to which one is best for you. There's no need to bash Console A just because you only have Console B, as nobody wins in such an argument. (I spent a lot of time pointing out the strengths of the PS3 this time around, but that's mainly due to its newness for me.) 2008 looks to be a fantastic, amazingly brilliant year for us gamers, as we have literally a hundred or more games of worth on the way. The only drawback to 2008 is that I already have sharp, aching pains in my lower wallet region.... yeah, I have a feeling my debit card is in for a workout this year
Happy gaming everyone, thanks for reading!
