GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con
Wednesday, Sep 2, 2009

So we launched our new series called "Advance Screening" where we will show you the first 12 minutes of a game and then answer your questions live afterwards. Well, 12 minutes is kind of flexible, depending on what the game is. If you didn't notice the big banner at the top, here's the video that went live today.

Let us know what you think! What kind of games do you want to see? We have some big surprises coming up, and don't worry, some will be more than 12 minutes. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 is on Friday, so stay tuned for that!

Anyway, off to Seattle tomorrow for PAX! Anyone here going? Anything you're looking forward to? I'm looking forward to eating at the fish market, heehee! I posted a bunch of pictures from PAX last year in my blog, we'll be taking tons of photos again!

Saw it right when it went live .. very cool show and idea .. extremely awesome for gamers who are doubting if they want a certain game or not .. but even for someone like me for instance who doesn't own a handheld or have interest in this game .. it was fun to watch just as a game show .. obviously there were some technical stuff (did Ricardo disappear at one point or were my eyes deceiving me !! ) but that's to be expected when you're trying out a new format for the first time ..

so kudos and keep on delivering awesomness ! xD .. looking fwd as well to ur pix from PAX (hehe that sounded funny) ..

I don't know What to say but GS is improving, It's becoming something like OLD GS, We have so many great things like TOTS; 3 times a week, Caption contest & Now these marathon kind of thing, WOW It's great, Great Job GS.........

Hats of to all of U GS.....

Still wanna see some great big names too in this show Advance Screening, something big like Section 8, Wet, Scribblenauts, Halo 3 :ODST, Kingdom Hearts 358/2, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Dead Space Extraction.

These r a few good choices, Some huge names, The game was good for Mario fans but pretty boring for rest of us, It is a great show by the way, Awesome concept.......

Secondly doesn't u guys agree, We can have a rating system in the show or If not rating from score then from stars or Thumbs up, It will b great to see preview score from show & Then review score, It'll b really fun.......

Sophie PLZ consider this concept, It will b really great to see rating by u previewers & Then See How the Review goes, I think many ppl will b very pleased to see ratings in the show.........

BTW Sophie how to ask questions in the show??, If U ppl can Why not make a separate section for the show like TOTS & Give Submit Question option at the side that will b really cool........

[MORE IN PART 2].......

[THIS IS PART 2]....

In the End it was the first episode, So wasn't perfect but I'm sure U ppl will improve it a lot & PLZ Consider some lightning for the set but Still it's beautiful, Hey & Great job with TOTS in a few episodes ur show has improved a lot.........

In the end lookin forward to pics from PAX but still don't know what PAX is .......

It wasn't bad at all. Although, I don't know if they weren't very enthusiastic about the game or if they were tired, seemed a bit bored-sounding. Otherwise the whole thing was pretty cool, like the idea.

aw I missed it, I was hoping to get in a question.

This is a great idea for a regular feature. It gives people a good idea of what a game will play like before it hits shelves.

As for what games I'd like to see, I'm hoping for less sequels and more new IPs like Alpha Protocol and Brutal Legend. People generally already have an idea of what type of game they're getting with sequels, but it would be nice to see more games we don't already have a frame of reference for.

hope you have fun at PAX.
And only 20 minutes? Knowing jrpgs I guess thats enough for the begining section and tutorial.

@pakhair - from the TOTS page, there is a "Submit Question" button there for future episodes where you can ask questions. PAX is Penny Arcade Expo.

@munchlax99 - I'm curious to see what you deleted @aryoshi - we were tired! It's been a rough week. Next time we'll drink some caffeine beforehand

@Sophia
Ahhh, well that's alright then. Think we all know about being tired like that

Is it always going to be just the first 12 minutes of a game? Just with a lot of games, especially RPGs, it takes a while to actually get into.

It was a great show. Can't wait for Marvel, that is my most wanted game this year.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 1:15 am PT
honestly i found it kind of boring. i think the screenings should be longer.
Posted Sep 3, 2009 2:31 am PT
good idea, i like this advanced screening- but it dosent look like my type of game
Posted Sep 3, 2009 7:21 am PT
@GameBlender - No, there will be longer screenings.

@RealKilla_789 - Do you want it to be longer so you can see more exciting gameplay? Or are you just bored with it in general?

@sophia
nothing

I enjoyed the show. It was a good idea having you there too, because it's hard to play and talk at the same time. It came off very well.

I quite like the new format but I think that maybe you could do a little bit of editing or polishing to the recorded version posted up on the site after the live show has gone out (maybe with a little clip of the game over the top to mask the cut) to make the thing run more smoothly. Having said that, it'd probably run more smoothly anyway in future as you'd be more used to doing these.

I definately like the fact that it shows the start of the game (with optional fast-forward) so viewers can get a taste of the game and get their own impressions, and involving Q&A is a great touch. I quite like Pakhair's suggestion for a public Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down voting for whether or not they like the pre-release impressions of the game.

As you've actually got the game with you for the Q&A, if any of the questions could be answered by a few seconds of in-game demonstration (maybe by taking a couple of gameplay-specific questions slightly earlier on in the screening) that would be wonderful.

I'll be looking forward to future episodes of 'Advance Screening' with games I know a bit more about, possibly games which would have otherwise only been given a short written article for 'Hands On'.

In short - well done GameSpot; you definately get my vote for the new wave of member participation and involving what the people ask for.

As usual my criticsm is that it is shown at midnight in the UK.

A very informative little marathon, I particularly like the cinema backgrouud.

@Sophia. i wanted to see more gameplay. i felt like a lotta of the time was taken up by given us the background information and answering questions.

@GunnyHath - it is! I'm glad some people realize that, haha. Thank you

@Kristophski - Thanks for your feedback. I agree with your points. I have brought them up, so we'll see what we can do.

With Bowser's Inside Story being high on my list of must-have games, I have to say that sure was a great video. Keep up the good work.
Posted Sep 5, 2009 12:42 am PT
I loved the previous Mario & Luigi game so this is also a must buy I like the concept and like pakhair said I really like all the new features GS again have

have fun on PAX going there? I don't think so, with school and a trip from Europa to U.S. that wouldn't be a wise choice but I think I will go to GamesCom next year
