A week has just passed, and I have begun my senior year of college. I am taking 17 credit hours for this semester. It may sound like a lot, but it's nowhere near as awful as taking 18. Actually, this is one reason why I think taking 17 credit hours isn't so bad. Here is what my fall semester looks like. The following descriptions are taken from the syllabi.

FALL SEMESTER 2009 SCHEDULE

CADD – Fundamentals of engineering drawing & sketching: orthographic projections, dimensioning, tolerancing, and scaling; Introduction to the CADD interface and environment; 2D drawing basics; using object snaps, layers, blocks; dimensioning; Introduction to 3D modeling; extrusions, revolves, & rendering.

Technical Communications (8:15 – 9:35 T,TR) : A comprehensive study of technical and professional communication in written and oral form. Covers rhetorical principles and their application in a variety of business correspondence, reports, and technical/scientific documents. Lecture, discussion, oral assignments and classroom exercises.

3D Lighting and Rendering (11:15 – 2:05 T, TR) : This course will focus on rendering with Maya. We'll start with raw models, go through the texturing decisions and process, and proceed through rendering. We'll be creating shader networks and work with different techniques for lighting, texturing, and rendering. We'll be working with at least two renderers: the default Maya renderer, and Mental Ray. We'll be discussing modeling and animation only as they impact to lighting and rendering.

Introduction to Film (online) : In this course, the techniques and aesthetics of cinema are studied through the presentation of feature and short film. Students read selections in the text, peruse course information and independently view films illustrating certain techniques and aesthetics that are to be chosen from a list of selected films for that purpose. As there is no central viewing area, students are expected to locate films on their own (video stores, public libraries, university media centers, various online rental or purchase sites) and view them. The list of films ranges from classic examples of the technique or aesthetic under consideration to more modern variations or modifications of it, and is designed to aid students who may not have access to classic films.

Those are the main courses I'm taking this semester. The rest are just concert band, tuba/euphonium ensemble, and brass choir. So it seems that my writing intensive classes may be my only concern. I don't consider myself the best writer, but I do try to convey thoughts like I do in my blogs. Other than that, I think this will be a good semester for me. However, I may have to limit myself by not coming onto MSN which I haven't been doing as much lately. If it's something you feel like sharing with me, you know how to contact me.

SUMMER 2009 MOVIES

I won't go into this much, but I did manage to see four movies this summer. This was a topic I left out in my previous blog, but here is a list (from great to decent) of what I saw.

1. Ponyo

2. Up

3. District 9

4. Public Enemies

All I can say is that I am very happy to have finally seen a Hayao Miyazaki movie in theaters. The experience was really phenomenal. Sure, it was an English-dub since it was released through Disney, but I still enjoyed watching it nonetheless. This is one movie I hope to get when it comes on DVD. As far as Miyazaki movies go, I'd say this is his best animated one yet.

Up was a very different movie coming from Pixar. I'd say this movie is more for a mature audience in regards of how the story is told. Speaking of mature, I don't think this movie is intended for smaller children. I'd say anyone over the age of 10 would be more suitable to watch this movie because of the few intense scenes the movie has. If you thought Wall-E was brilliant, I highly recommend seeing it.

District 9 was a big surprise for me when I went to see it with a friend. I did like the documentary feel at the very beginning of the movie even though I did feel it was dragging the movie a bit. Then, it hits you with a lot of over-the-top action sequences which I thought would done pretty well. I'll paraphrase from what I put on my Facebook status after I saw the movie: It was very bloody, gory, and vulgar, but I thought it was very entertaining.

Now Public Enemies was slightly disappointing. I was expecting to see more robberies and more familiar gangsters than the few the movie had. Another letdown was how much the camera angles kept shaking especially during the shoot-outs. Seriously, I have seen some amateur camera work that are much better than what I saw in theaters. I understand this is Michael Mann's style of filmmaking, but I think the guy could give it a rest and just shoot with steady camera shots. What I did admire was how well Johnny Depp and Christian Bale did their roles in the movie especially when you see the two of them having a conversation. If anyone is curious to see it, I'd suggest renting it.

SEGA DREAMCAST 10TH ANNIVERSARY

Anyone what the date is? Oh boy! Ten years ago, Sega released the long defunct Dreamcast. I didn't get it until mid-2000. I had loads of fun playing it even though I had skipped on the PSOne/N64 consoles. However, I was unable to experience the online portion due to the fees they would charge. It would have been nice to have that experience, but there are others ways to get that experience elsewhere. Anyway, here are my top five favorite Dreamcast games. Please note that this is based off of what I have played.

1. Rayman 2: The Great Escape

2. Sonic Adventure

3. Phantasy Star Online

4. NBA 2K1

5. Sonic Adventure 2

GAMESPOT ANNIVERSARY SHOUT-OUTS

Here it is, everyone! The shout-outs you all have been waiting for! If I have left you out, then it may be you and I never got a chance to get to know each other well. Out of all the people I have on my friends list, there are very few that I keep track of because they were kind enough to stop by and comment on my blogs and such. Plus, there's no way I can list everyone right off the bat. So consider this an apology in advance.

As much as I wanted to say something to all of you, it would be like asking the impossible, but I will say this. Thank you all for being good friends throughout my four years on GameSpot. Things may have been rough at the very beginning when you guys got to know me, but I have changed in a lot of ways now that I have dedicated this much time coming here. I know I keep saying this, but I will say it again. I hope that someday I will play either with or against you all when I get a place for myself and the proper gaming consoles needed.

With that, I better be on my way and do some studying… and drawing… and hanging out with friends… and waiting on music I ordered from Amazon (a couple by Philip Glass and one from John Williams)

Thank you all for reading!

Until next time!

17 hours is still a lot though... sometimes I find myself overwhelmed even with just 15. I suppose I should be getting ready because the remaining semesters in my degree plan are packed.

But your classes sound really interesting though (with the exception of the communications one... not my favorite haha). Mine are a mix of interesting and boring. Mostly just engineering material sciences and manufacturing classes, and a few core stuff. And ooh, I got a shoutout!!

Hey! Thanks for the mention.
Sounds like you have a fun school year ahead of you. I'm going to try and get out to see District 9 this weekend.

That film class sounds pretty similar to two classes I took in college except they weren't online. The first one was early American Film History and the second was the same class subject, but about much more current films.

If you limited yourself to one game per series, and thus couldn't place Sonic Adventure 2 on the list, what would that fifth game then be?

Thanks for the shout-out!

@dbz345: This isn't the first time I have taken 17 credit hours. I'm kind of used to it.

I am happy with the classes I am taking except for the technical communications one. And you're welcome!

@ebbderelict: You're welcome!
Sounds like it. It all depends on each class pans out. Hope you enjoy the movie.

@usagi704: We are given film choices, and some of them are early American films. The earliest I have seen from this class so far is His Girl Friday (1940). I think I'm going to enjoy this class more despite the fact that we have to discuss about the films we watched on a forum. Because of this week's topic, Classic Hollywood Narrative and Style, I'll get a chance to see both The Terminator and The Road Warrior through Netflix's instant watch.

@hart704: Hmm, it would probably be a coin toss between Crazy Taxi and NFL 2K.

You're welcome!

Thanks for mentioning, we have actually something in common: the same birthday.
Well that's the only thing, I think
Enjoy your semester have fun!

Heard Rayman 2 was pretty good. I did play a rayman game for the original playstation before thought it was pretty good not sure which one I played. I haven't seen any of the movies listed not sure if I would or not.

@nsoliveira: You're welcome! Yeah, I think that's about it.
And thanks!

@-Vulpix-: Rayman 2 is a beautiful platformer. I wish I still had my Dreamcast to play it.

Whoa, thanks a bunch for the shout-out and huge congratulations for sticking around for such a long while! It's a shame I didn't get to read your blog earlier, though. Anyways, here I am, albeit possibly only momentarily.

"3D Lighting and Rendering" sounds really awesome! I really wouldn't mind getting to try that one, even though I'm sure I wouldn't do any good. All in all, hopefully you'll enjoy those courses. Most of them I'd like, judging by the blog.

Ponyo got an English release through.. Disney? What's happening? I mean, the movie came out in 2006 if I remember right.. Anyways, Miyazaki's movies are phenomenal, and I'm lucky enough to own most on Blu-Ray, haha! You should definitely check out other Miyazaki films as well. As you said, Public Enemies was a letdown of sorts (with the hidden modern-day car and all ), but Depp did an extremely good job! The only movies I'm interested in right now are 9 and.. District 9, haha. I'll definitely have to go see District 9 based on your thoughts! Gore is always good.

Ahh, Dreamcast. Sega really ended the game with a blast, huh? Even though I preferred my N64 over any other console back then, Dreamcast probably had the most legendary games, such as Rayman, Sonic and Phantasy Star, which you mentioned. I too wish I still had mine, but it suffered a hellish end..

Anyways, take care, and hope to play against you too sometime!

Heh, sounds like it'll be an awesome Senior year, though don't overwork yourself . The rendering class will be pretty fun. Though I will say I much prefer the rendering capabilities in 3ds Max, it has a lot more power than Maya. Usually a lot of people will use outside render programs. For example, Pixar made their own: "Renderman".

And thanks for the shoutout! I kinda feel like I don't deserve it, since I mostly just read the blogs and don't comment.

As for Miyazaki, you should definitely see Howle's Moving Castle. That one is great. I also enjoyed Ponyo, though Ponyo is much more aimed as a children's movie. His other ones have felt just a bit more mature.

And hey! Who says you need games to play? You can always try Forum Rp's again

Good luck with your final year! The 3D rendering and Lighting class sounds interesting. I had a Nintendo 64 back then so I missed out on the Dreamcast. I'm actually thinking about tracking one down on eBay when I get a full time job though Thanks for the shout-out, and happy 4 years on the site!

I'm taking only 8 this year. I've taken 12 hour semesters for the past 4 semesters! I love my new schedule now! I have technical communications as well. My teacher in there is so cool! He told us a story in the first class about how he accidently flip off his class ROFL! I've kinda wanted to see Ponyo, though it does look kinda kiddish. I saw Up! I have to say that was the greatest movie I have seen this year.

@HavQ-san: You're welcome!

Whenever I'm in that class, it's kind of relaxing to some extent. All we do mostly is Photoshop work and then apply the textures correctly in Maya. At least that's what I know so far in this class.

Well, I have seen Miyazaki's other works with Spirited Away being my favorite so far. Because Pixar's John Lasseter has been good friends with Miyazaki for a long time now, we are fortunate enough to get his movies on DVD. A hidden modern-day car in Public Enemies? I'll have to find that on YouTube. I would not mind seeing 9, and you might enjoy District 9.

Yes, the Dreamcast went down severely.

Thanks! You too!

@ValtheJean: I'll try not to overdue it. I know someone in the department who is very skilled in 3ds Max, but I'm kind of stuck with Maya because of how much I've used the program.
You're welcome. At least I know you from forum RPs.

I have seen that movie. However, it didn't like it as much as I thought I would. It was visually stunning, but I didn't like the pacing of the story.

That is true, but I have been slacking off on one I'm currently involved in. If you happen to participate in one, let me know and I'll think about it.

@gamer_girl15: Thanks! It's a fairly decent class so far. I found a Dreamcast at a store for $40, and I hope to get it someday. You're welcome and thanks again!

@chopperlink: I have a friend who is taking only two. Then again, he's a super senior, so I don't know when he'll graduate.

@SonicHomeboy - Heh, I'll have to hold you to your word then. After all, we still need to resolve the whole Gerith Eddie thing
Posted Sep 12, 2009 3:55 pm PT
@ValtheJean: That's right. Hope to see Gerith someday.
