For what this film was, I loved it.
It was a mystery and a thriller, but very very subtle.
However it also contained action - in the great scene of a chase between the lead and the police.
And romance in small doses, most naturally portrayed through the lead's sister and her wife, who just happened to be a happy lesbian couple with no additional reasons.
The clues were great - you had to have a really good memory and be watching really closely to understand what was happening at times. For instance when flowers got delivered to the house, I originally thought the deliveryman was a hitman. However I then remembered where we had seen the flowers before and realised it was a private clue.
The film kept me hooked from beginning to end, there wasn't a moment of boredom during the whole film.
The eventual explanation was also done very well - Margaret's father's confession and the story of the paedophile.
All in all the film left me feeling that justice may not have been fully done, but that things would now get better.

I was pleasantly surprised by this film - after I'd got over all the pain and tragedy that is. The film was excellent, especially as it came straight out of Hollywood - who would have thought that Hollywood would be so willing to confront such a big global issue? Leonardo DiCaprio was fantastic, as were the actors who played Solomon and his son. I am so so glad that Danny Archer died in Africa, with the red soil of his country - it was the only fitting ending for his character I think. I'm equally glad that he didn't end up with Maddie - I cringed throughout their closer moments, I think perhaps the film would have been stronger had the relationship between the pair stayed professional.
Of course, there were many unrealistic bits. The relationships between characters didn't always have the time to develop carefully enough, and the fact that Dia was at the diamond mines was totally unbelievable, but as a whole the film made some good political comments, whilst engaging the audience with strong characters.

I enjoyed this film - it included some great dialogue, with comic lines, thoughtful scenes and of course, superb acting, but I just don't believe it deserves the intense praise bestowed on it. Yes, Helen Mirren was amazing, she became the Queen, just as Tony and Cherie Blair were equally acted out to the full. However, I don't think acting alone makes a film. This was a good film, but not a brilliant one. It certainly did not deserve a round of applaud at the end! For me, a good film makes me think long after the curtains have closed over the cinema screen. This film did have some imagery, but it didn't leave me aching for more. So, although I liked The Queen, I think other films are definitely more oscar-worthy than this.

I did enjoy this film but it wasn't quite as good as I'd expected. Rewviews that I read claimed the film went even further than 'Crash', but to me it seemed this film tried to meet 'Crash''s standards and didn't quite make it. Therefore, although all of the individual story-lines were interesting and intriguing I don't think it worked quite as well as a film of the 'linked stories' genre; the Japenese bit in particular (though enjoyable) seemed randomly thrown-in only to explore communication further and the rest (Mexican nanny and goat herders) wasn't that deep. One thing that was fantastic about the film was the acting. I personally have no idea why Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett get mentioned on all the posters, for me, they were by far the weakest of this multicultural multilingual cast. Even the children were really good actors.
