GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con

Well, it's more of an idea. And to make sure everyone knows this before I start, I'm not trying to start a revolt or anything. I'm merely trying to coordinate with others already leaving and come up with a good plan of action. And also, the main reason why we're leaving isn't only because of Jeff's firing, it's because as long as CNET controls GameSpot, they can't be completely trusted.

All these people are canceling their GameSpot subscriptions and leaving the site for good right? Even a whole bunch of unions are closing down and leaving. I believe I want to want to move my union also. I can't be associated with a company like CNET after this. And for the main reason, don't you think it would be sad if everybody on this site just went their separate ways never to see each other again?

I thought of a way to prevent this from happening. I also thought of a great domain name for this. I was thinking about getting it and we could set up a separate forum from GameSpot's. It would have all the necessary boards on it. We could even link to Systemwars.com instead of making a board for that. Besides replicating the main GS boards, then we could have a sub-section for all the unions that wanted to move over to this site. We could supply temporary forums for their unions until they develop a website of their own, and even after they leave, we can link to their new website instead of a forum for them. For example, I could move the HCU into its own separate board on this site until we develop a real website for it. I know a lot of leaders that want off the site, but don't really know how they would get off. Wouldn't it be great if we could help them all out?

This way, everybody can stick together instead of going separate ways. We'd need to set it up real fast though, and I mean while this is still being argued over in the forums. That's the only way we'll be able to spread the word about it. Everybody is still up in arms about it, so they'll easily advertise it for us. For example, I remember when I first created the Unions: Version 2 thread and sent out a telegram to all my members asking them to support it, and if anyone was a union leader to send out a telegram to their members too. This one telegram started a chain reaction that resulted in thousands of supporters. Imagine how we could advertise this thing? Sigs, telegrams, threads, blog posts, etc... Everyone would be willing to spread the word, and because of it, a lot of people would get the message and either come or stay here.

We'd need to try and convince other GS moderators to come over too, that way we'll have order on the new forums, and not one where users think they can do anything. It could start with just a regular forum separated into sections to speed things up creating it. Then after all the advertisements are out of the way and people start coming over, then we can try making it look better.

The problem is that this is not a task that I can do myself, since I know nothing about installing boards on websites. I'd be willing to help out in the transition and maybe even management, but if this is going to be done, other people interested in helping need to post in this blog RIGHT NOW and start talking about it.We'll need somebody that can setup the forum for sure.

It would be something like this. You go to the site, and it will just be a forum to start out with...

General Forums:
- General Games Discussion
- Welcome Newbies
- Off-Topic Discussion

Platform Forums:
- PC Games
- PC Hardware Discussion
- PlayStation 2
- PlayStation 3
- Sony PSP
- Xbox
- Xbox 360
- GameCube
- Nintendo Wii
- Nintendo DS
- Game Boy Advance
- System Wars

Special Interest Forums:
- Sports Game Dicussion
- General Hardware Discussion

Support Forums:
- Site Enhancements & Feedback
- Technical Support
- Ask the Mods

GameSpot Unions:
- The HeadCrab Union
- Union Leader Council
- Age of Empires Union
- etc...

With the union forums, these would be temporary or permanent ones based on what the leader of that union wants to do. Say a leader contacts us and wants a forum for his union. We create it and add it to the list, we give that leader admin powers only for that forum and not the others and then we let them go from there. They can announce on their union to move to the new forum, and then they can stay there until they develop a site of their own.

Tell me what you guys think about this idea, and start discussing it if it sounds like something we should do..

sounds good, i'll help you as much as I can, If it would be helpfull i could be a moderator to prevent pedo bears and as much random spamming/useless racist(whatever) comments.

interesting, but how do you propose to make the site, I will advertise the best I can if I get more detail.

I have a site already that I'm using for my union's future, however I would gladly help out with this if I could. My site, Neo-Genesis won't be able to change to what would be necessary in this case, and I have my hands tied at this moment so I can't really be much of help besides some suggestions.

You would need a good host, and this site, http://www.bihira.com, you can purchase relatively cheap hosting, it's what I'm using for my own site. It gives you control over domains and everything, so whoever goes through with it, there's an option.

Not sure if you've heard of TotalGamerZone but I'm an admin there and we would be more than welcome to have new contributing members. We're working on a new site design and the stuff that you're talking could work out with our future ideas. I'll let the main admin know about your ideas, hopefully we could work something out. We've been around since last April and we've gotten review-copies of games and stuff, with a contributing community like we've seen in GS's best unions, we could all make TGZ an awesome place to be at. Let me know what you think about this.

While I don't encourage moving off-site, I do agree with you that if people are leaving anyway they may as well stay in touch. As a temporary method of communication I reccommend IRC.

Leaving for a guy you never knew is a bit like saving a princess that you never met. & boy of boy is that cliche

We're not leaving for Jeff. We're leaving because as long as CNET controls GameSpot, we can't trust them.

Oh, and I'm going to add my above comment into the first post.

Well leaving because of people who you have never talked to made one "major" (As some people call it) mistake is a bit harsh aswell...
Posted Dec 1, 2007 7:39 pm PT
I'm supposed to be talking to _Sam_ about this in an hour. He said he has a proposal for me, so if it's good then I'll let you guys know.
Posted Dec 1, 2007 8:06 pm PT
Hey if you add a spot for some of us aspiring writers to write reviews, do benchmarks and editorials. I will gladly help to coordinate it and run the site. I know HTML and some Javascript and love writing and pc games of course. so hey, i know i was never really involved with The Headcrab union but i love this idea.
Posted Dec 1, 2007 8:36 pm PT
Well, I talked to Sam. It was mainly about my union. He knows somebody (I talked to him) that will take the HCU in, build us a web site, host our game servers, etc... all for free. I think I'm going to take him up on his offer. He said that he doesn't trust like 90% of unions on GameSpot, but if there is one that is dedicated and serious about what they do, then PM _Sam_ about it and they'll check your union out.

So if I go with these guys Sam knows, I probably won't have anything to do with everything I listed here. Unless they would create a forum solely for GameSpot boards.

I'll have more information at a later time, but if you are a dedicated leader then contact me.
Posted Dec 1, 2007 11:50 pm PT
I completely agree to this.

I'd join.

Count me in! I'm planning to leave GameSpot and if we could get this site up i would do it right away! I will get everybody i know with! No problem! Show us the way!
Posted Dec 2, 2007 6:21 am PT
I would join but I'd have to say I mostly come to this site for videos. I check out the reviews but they're not the most important thing for me to consider.

Still, if you're sure about that forum idea, go for it. I'd join.

Sounds interesting. I'd join.
Posted Dec 2, 2007 9:12 am PT
If things turn any worse I'm in. But for the time being I'll try to stick it out... Man... This is not a good time for a fledgling union like mine...

I'll most likely make a blog post soon on what I've been doing about this.

Sam, I and the other AoEU mods will currently be focusing on our new off-gs site (as soon as some of us find time ) but I think that we'll all be more than glad to chip in and make this thing work.
Posted Dec 4, 2007 9:23 am PT
I'd definitely join the site, however people are already beginning to forget the whole Jeff thing, so I'm not sure it will really work. Its just so difficult to organize something like that.
Posted Dec 8, 2007 8:21 am PT
That's a great idea, and you are right, the time to capitalize is now. This is a huge opportunity to create something new and fresh, and potentially huge. A collaboration of Union leaders breaking away from Gamespot to form this new community after the fallout of Jeff being fired. It's almost inspirational. But I'm sure my opinion doesn't matter much any more.
