I just read the message on the news page about The Simpsons winning it's Emmy. Despite hateful comments fromt the gallery, I'm delighted. I began watching The Simpsons when they premiered as a regular series in 1989 and my love for the show has never waned.
The show contains some of the best writing of any show on television, it is consistantly funny, it continues to evolve, which is why it's been on for nearly two decades. You know, I've been watching this show all my adult life. It premiered in late 1989 when I was a junior in high school and I've been a rabid fan ever since. The 20th season begins next week and I am thrilled (more to the fact that for the first time in a long time, the Halloween show will air BEFORE Halloween). Next December the show will celebrate a milestone, it will have been on as a regular series for 20 straight years, how about that?
Go Simpsons, now and for many years to come.
While attending TV.com's Fringe chat last week, I made the point of mentioning that, while I enjoyed the new J.J. Abrams show, I was worried about it's future. The show was good but not outstanding, watchable but not compelling and being fair I am willing to give it time to grow. But with just 9 million viewers watching it's premiere last Tuesday, I'm not sure that the FOX network will be as patient as I am willing to be.
FOX is the great Cancellation King, routinely dumping shows that are just finding their legs regardless of the viewership. Anyone who remembers the debacle that followed Firefly several years ago knows what I am talking about. I've been a fan of ill-fated shows that disappeared from the lineup before (Brimstone, Harsh Realm). But I don't think they will wait for Fringe. Even if the numbers pick up with tonight's episode, I think the show's days are numbered.
