GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con
Saturday, Jul 25, 2009

It's kind of starting to wind down now, I think, so maybe this is a little late, but I thought I'd rant and discuss some of the happenings at San Diego Comic Con. I don't doubt most or everyone here has seen or heard some of it, but it's always nice to see the opinions of some random shmuck online, right? Right.

James Cameron's Avatar: So, they showed 25 minutes or so of the movie behind closed doors and still virtually nothing is shown to the public? Well, they do know how to get enthusiasm going, what with all the secrecy. Then again, I could be totally wrong and there have been at least four trailers out--but I doubt it! But they did talk about the game somewhat, which is good. Oh, but wait, it was the Wii version, so I have to hate it! Scoff! Actually, there's been some pretty positive feedback on the look and feel of the gameplay, and it seems like the implemented Wii Motion Plus controls have been well-received so far. I haven't actually seen anything of the game, so I'm still unsure I'm really interested in it.

Halo Legends: This is kind of a weird one for me. As some of you may know, I'm not a fan of Halo. I occasionally enjoy myself a hammer match or a couple levels on Plastic Pretty Pansy Mode, but other than that, I never got on the Halo boat. Still, with the recent bits on ODST from E3 and the newly announced Halo Legends series of short films, I can't help but have a teensy bit of interest. One thing about Halo Legends that has me confused is simple enough. "Why anime?" I'm not knocking anime, and there are a few anime shows I still like, but most people I know who play Halo aren't into anime, so it almost seems like they're mistaking their fanbase here. I know liking Halo and liking anime aren't exclusive things and that there probably is quite a bit of overlap, but it almost seems like this will hit a much smaller audience than they're hoping.

WarCraft Movie: Okay, I've said this before in other places, and I'm going to say it again. This is NOT a WoW movie. This is a WarCraft movie. It's just the saddest thing to me that so many people are unaware of the existence of games in the WarCraft franchise other than WoW, especially when its predecessor, WarCraft III is so much better (in my opinion). That aside, I do have some interest in the prospect of the movie, if only because Sam Raimi is helming the project. Say what you want about the guy, but he did pretty well with the first two Spider-Man films, and I think he'll be able to turn it around for the fourth. And the Evil Dead films are really pretty good. And I'm hearing tons of positive feedback about Drag Me to Hell, which frankly has me surprised. Anyway, I'm cautiously optimistic here. Fantasy tends to not be good where movies are concerned. It's not a rule, though...

The Green Hornet: Not much to say here, other than the car looks sweet. And to be honest, I don't hate Seth Rogen. The movie looks to be pretty ridiculous, but more than likely in a good way.

Iron Man 2: New suit... Apparently, they had a teaser, but I haven't seen it pop up on the tubes anywhere so I assume that one's staying pretty hush. I liked the first Iron Man, so I'll definitely see the second sometime after they roll it out. I don't know if they can match it, to be honest, but I can hope this one will be to Iron Man what Spider-Man 2 was to Spider-Man. Granted, Spider-Man wasn't really great, but it was far from bad, and... You can see where this is going.

Eh, you know what? I'm too lazy to go into detail on anything else. I'm so dedicated to this blog it's unreal. You guys stay classy.

Did you see the trailer of Halo Legends, or rather nearly 2 minute long teaser? It looks hot and I think it is the perfect animation design for the halo universe, the mechas look amazing!

Anyway, I feel like James Cameron Avatar is being extremely over hyped. Do you think people will honestly see this film in December when it releases? I still feel like 3D is over rated and until the movie experience in 3D is like this here (http://www.universalorlando.com/theme-parks/universal-studios-orlando/attractions/terminator-2-3-D.html) then I will not be a proponent of it.

I just saw GS' ads but didn't even check it out. And actually nothing on that list interests me much.

@nb49: It stems more from my laziness and unwillingness to blog too much.

@TristanH12: I did see the teaser, and I think I'll have to watch it. Avatar... Yeah, I can kind of see where you're coming from there. We're kind of seeing the same thing that happened with Cloverfield about a year back. Cloverfield itself wasn't bad, but it didn't live up to the hype that was basically its only form of advertisement. As for 3D, I think it has some staying power, but only when it's done right. From what's coming out of Comic Con, Avatar is one of those rare movies that doesn't use 3D in a way that feels forced, and if that's so, I say bring it on. But for every movie that does 3D well (Up, apparently Avatar, and a couple others I can't even think of at the moment), there will always be the movies that use it for cheap thrills. I'm still very much on the fence about 3D, but it has potential.

@slipknoob: Yeah, despite Comic Con being accepted much more by mainstream audiences in the past several years, it still seems to have a sort of niche appeal. Can't please everyone, but that's cool. I'd recommend browsing over the coverage somewhere, though, in case you find something that does interest you. You never know.

The less I know about Avatar, the better. It's so rare for a movie to surprise people these days.

I started playing Warcraft III recently and it is awesome. I'll likely check out that movie since I'm a huge Raimi fan. I do wonder what this means for Spider-Man 4 though.

@johnsteed7: I would like to be surprised with Avatar, but I have a feeling they're going to start revealing more soon. I would like to see a trailer, however vague. Maybe something along the same lines as what they did for Cloverfield, where you don't know what's going on, and that's half the reason you'll end up going. I've been meaning to buy WarCraft III for a while, but I don't have the money to do it quite yet. Hopefully, in a few weeks, I'll have enough spare money to pick up the set with the expansions. I don't think we'll need to worry about Spider-Man 4 coming out later. The WC movie is probably going to wait until Spider-Man is finished before it gets underway. Or, who knows? Maybe they'll make WarCraft their priority?
