GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con

I've been reflecting on my Playstation 3 titles (all two of them) since I've been trying to make a YouTube video about MGS4 for the past two days, and you know in my eyes, I still see Final Fantasy 13 as a Sony product, it just makes the most sense. But back to the real point, it doesn't seem like anyone is really excited for Final Fantasy 13 for some reason. Obviously we know nothing about it except a few CGI trailers, but do we really need anything more? I've been dying to see more of the game as time goes on. I think this game is going to be fantastic, not for any logical reason, but just because of the pattern that has developed in the series.

Back in 1987 Final Fantasy was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System, and at that time was considered one of the best role playing games ever created. There wasn't much competition, but when I hear about all the features the original FF had, and then think about how it was released in 1987, that's just amazing in my eyes. But then again, I wasn't alive so I can't speak much about this game anyway.

You spoony bard!

The next two games were also pretty good (from what I hear) but the next big landmark was with the release of Final Fantasy IV for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game had a real plot for once, which was a drastic change from the "Fighter, Thief, Mage, and Black Mage" band of characters that you had to roll with. Storylines became a key component to not just Final Fantasy games, but RPGs in general. The game obviously stuck with a lot of people, seeing as how it's just been released for the Nintendo DS with updated 3D graphics and plenty of other features and additions. I don't want to talk down FF5 and FF6, because those are also considered good games by many. However...

Some gamers cried, years later, others would yell "OWNED!!!"

Compared to Final Fantasy 7 they really don't have much to say. Now, again, I was not big into gaming in 1997 (I had just bought an N64 and Goldeneye, and didn't really know the playstation existed) so I can't talk about how ground-breaking the game was at the time, but its fame is known world wide. When one game spawns a snow boarding game, a CGI movie, and a spinoff 3rd person shooter, you know it's a hit. Final Fantasy 7 was the first FF to be on a console that could render in 3D, allowing the game to make huge technical changes.

Tidus and Yuna from Final Fantasy X

Finally, Final Fantasy X was released for the Playstation 2 in 2001. Of course, many people do not consider this "the greatest FF game ever made" but I think those people are lame. I personally love FFX and I've replayed through it so many times it's possibly one of my favorite games of all time (Check out the Spira page, I wrote everything). With the addition of voice acting, real facial expressions, and a more realistic and developed characters and storyline, what's not to love? I really consider FFX to be the last good Final Fantasy game. Final Fantasy 11 is not a real FF game, and neither is FFX-2. Final Fantasy 12 is the last real FF game, and to be honest, that game sucks. It's so boring and dull, god I hate it more than anything.

"Lightning" in Final Fantasy XIII

But now Final Fantasy 13 is coming to the Playstation 3, and Xbox360. It's been around ever since the Playstation 3 was first announced, so you know it's already got the long development times expected from an FF game, and from the fractions of seconds I've seen of gameplay, the graphics look amazing. The "white engine" is supposed to be some real time battle system that works like FF12, but doesn't suck ass. I'm wondering if they can pull it off, but it's the development team of FFX, so I have more faith than those FF11 and 12 jokers. The only real reason I think the game will be amazing is because it's a new FF game, using new technology, for the first time. It's worked exceedingly well in the past (For more information, read the previous four mammoth paragraphs) so I expect something similar will happen with FF13. I just realized this after playing some FFX (again) today, and now I'm totally stoked for FF13, even though nothing has been released on it for quite some time.

Get Ready. Get Excited.
