Wow, what a night Friday night was.

I went to visit my grandad as usual and picked up the local paper. To my utter astonishment, I read in the Gig Guide that Zero (a thrash metal band from Sunderland: I mentioned them a couple of blogs ago) were coming to play at a pub in Blackburn. Naturally, I turned into a gibbering mess and called the friend I was about to visit in order to persuade him to go down there with me.

There were three acts playing (all thrash metal acts that were obviously inspired by the likes of Pantera and Slayer), though by the time we got there, the first one (Chaos Dawn) had almost finished. A pity really, as they sounded pretty good (oh, and if there are any Metalocalypse fans reading this, there was a guy watching who was a dear ringer for Nathan Explosion ).

The second act to play were called ey Saw and they hailed from Manchester. We were both really impressed by how good they were and I was able to score a demo disk from the lead guitarist (for four pounds) after their set. It doesn't quite do their live sound justice, but is pretty good nonetheless (and I'm happy to share the files with anyone who's interested ). I also found out off there guitarist that they are still unsigned, which is an absolute travesty (especially given half the rubbish that seems to get signed these days ).

Something that really amused us both when ey Saw were playing was the sight of a guy slumped at a table: He was so wasted that he was completely out cold, which was no mean feat given just how loud the band were playing. Well it turned out that this guy was actually Zero's vocalist (who's known as "Slayer Dude" ), so he had to be roused before the band could actually take the stage. Well we went out for a short while so my friend could go and have a cigarette while ey Saw packed up their equipment and Zero set up theirs for their set and when we got back, Slayer Dude was conscious again, though he was quite obviously very drunk.

Well Zero's set was great fun. The band sound absolutely superb live: They're a dual-lead band and carry it off quite brilliantly. The antics of Slayer Dude were absolutely hilarious too: During the first song he berated the sound people (very colourfully ) for not knowing what they were doing (with some justification), during another he tripped over the edge of the stage and stumbled into the crowd, colliding with and flattening the Nathan Explosion lookalike. There was also an incident between songs when he dealt with a heckler in the most amusing fashion, though I'd undoubtedly get moderated if I went into detail here. He also stumbled backwards during another song and fell into one of the guitar amps, completely flattening it and finishing up spreadeagled backwards on top of it.

By this point, my sides were absolutely killing me because of how hard I'd been laughing, but sadly Zero's set was to be cut short: Slayer Dude had actually killed the guitar amp. The rest of the band did play a song while the other guitarist and ey Saw's guitarist tried to fix it, but it was to no avail and Zero's set was brought to a premature end.

All in all a fantastic night, though.

Oh, and after the set, I got talking to the guy that drove them over here and he promised me a copy of their new demo disk once they release it (again, I'll gladly share with anyone who's interested once I get it ).

Glad you had a good time. There's a metal group at my school called Cryptic. They're pretty good too. I think they have a myspace profile.

Freya: Indeed I did, thanks. I just wish that I could have shared it with some of you guys.

Kain: Thanks.

Half-Ghost: I did indeed, thanks.

Cecil: Thanks. If those guys do have a MySpace profile, please let me know where I can find it.

Kris: Indeed.

Teresa: Yeah, it was. I wish you could have been there too. Oh, and I'd be happy to share those songs with you later.

Jeff: Yeah, it was a surprise to me too. I was even more surprised that he was able to put down that heckler so effectively.

Nel: Yeah, it would have been great for you to have been there too. Oh, and I'll share those songs with you too.

hhh34c: Thanks very much. And thanks for continuing to put up with me despite how inactive I've been.

Dave: Yeah it could have been, but to be fair to him, Slayer Dude was actually pretty sharp for somebody who was so inebriated.

Locke: Yeah, I'd have loved you all to have seen his antics.

ROFL, awesome! Soounds like you got a show in addition to the concert! Would have had a good laugh myself! It did sound like he was pretty together for someone so intoxicated - must have had lots of practice!

Glad you had an awesome time Jake!

Nathan Explosion!!!!!!!!!!!! You just reminded me that I missed a Dethklok concert recently that happened. Heh, oh well. That's pretty damn awesome that you're gettin a chance to get an upcoming demo.
Posted Jul 11, 2008 12:11 am PT
Quistis: Indeed he was and given just how drunk he was, he clearly has had plenty of practice.

Ron: Thanks.

Nate: Yeah, it would be great if you all could have seen it.

Reno: Thanks. I remember you saying that Dethklok would be playing a gig near where you live. You obviously didn't get to see them, then.

Haha, nice ^_^ Sounds really awesome Kind of funny, I have "Cowboys From Hell" stuck in my head, and you mentioned Pantera xD
Posted Jul 12, 2008 12:23 am PT
Hey, there's nothing wrong with having 'Cowboys from Hell' stuck in your head. Do you have 'Vulgar Display of Power'?
Posted Jul 12, 2008 2:03 am PT
Yeah, "Cowboys from Hell" is an amazing song...Dimebag is freakin' amazing Yeah, that's right...He's still amazing, even after death Sadly, no, I don't have "Vulgar Display of Power" :/ I don't have any of their albums; I'm musically challenged xD No good music stores near me, and I'm still on teh dial-up.
Posted Jul 12, 2008 10:03 am PT
Uh oh! I sense a file transfer starting. As soon as, Ron gets his high speed internet.

but Jake, our folder still works.
Posted Jul 12, 2008 1:32 pm PT
Billy: That's a pity: Vulgar Display of Power has to be their best album. I could always share some files like Nel suggested, though.

Nel: Well I'll send you some more stuff tomorrow. You can share with Billy if you wish too.
Posted Jul 12, 2008 6:15 pm PT
I need to add you on MSN, Jake xD Wanna PM me your e-mail or something? Or I can just get it from Nel...*shrug* I downloaded a couple Pantera songs earlier with mah noob connection xD Downloaded Cowboys From Hell and Walk, both really awesome songs. I also downloaded a few MEGADETH songs, and I'm really getting into them... I realized I lied to you when I said I hadn't heard Symphony of Destruction, I just didn't know that's what the song was called Really good song IMO Also, I downloaded Over The Wall, Peace Sells, and Hangar 18 I plan on downloading a few more too... They have the perfect balance of growled/clear lyrics, and really awesome guitar IMO
Posted Jul 12, 2008 8:12 pm PT
Thanks for the new tunes Shared them with Tess
Once Ron (Billy), get his new internet connection, I'll share with him.
Posted Jul 13, 2008 8:35 am PT
Whoa, sounds like somebody had a big night... I'm glad you enjoyed yourself, seems like it would have been a blast to have been there...
Posted Jul 23, 2008 10:08 pm PT
Billy: I do like Megadeth, though I wouldn't say they one of my favourite bands. Hangar 18 is one of my favourite ever songs though, and I really do like the stuff they made prior to Countdown to Extinction, which was a stripped down version of their sound (much as the Black album was a stripped version of Metallica's sound).

Nel: Well I've since sent Billy the whole of the Vulgar Display of Power album now, as you probably already know.

Rikku: Indeed it was. As I've said before, I wish all my close friends could have been there.
Posted Jul 24, 2008 10:24 am PT
Eww, I hated the Black album...That's really lame :/ Bands seem to just screw things up for themselves nowadays.
Posted Jul 24, 2008 1:34 pm PT
Well the Black album was Metallica's route to a stripped down, more radio-friendly sound. And it did what it set out to do: It sold. It may have pissed off their long-serving fans, but they gained legions of fanboys instead. Of course these all buggered off again once a new fad came along, but that's okay as long as the easy dollar is earned first, right?
Posted Jul 24, 2008 2:43 pm PT
no I didn't know. He didn't tell me and neither did you. *pouts*
