Well life's been pretty eventful for me in the last month or so, and today was no exception. I got in my car and set off on the (thirty-odd mile) journey to work and roads were surprisingly quiet. Too quiet....

I pulled off at Junction 22 as I do every day and as I made my way down those same country back-roads, I noticed a burning smell. Just as I realised that it was definitely coming from my car, I noticed a little smoke start to drift through the gap at the side of the car bonnet. I began to look for somewhere to pull over, but I was on a narrow country road, so I had no choice but to carry on until I could find somewhere appropriate to stop.

A minute or two later, I was able to get my car off the road and by this time smoke was pouring into the car through the air vents. I sat there for a couple of minutes and continued to listen to my iPod as I waited for the smoke to clear (the song? "Bury Me in Smoke" by Down ) before lifting up the bonnet to see if I could work out what was wrong.

It turns out that my dad, who kindly topped up the oil for me (I drive an old car and it now burns oil), forgot to put the cap back on. There was oil all over the engine and it was this that had begun to burn.

I was just grateful that it was nothing more serious....

A very smokey day it seems...

That would definitely scare me. I'm glad you're okay and that it wasn't more serious... *hugs*

Woah! Seriously? I would have stopped as soon as I noticed the smoke, country road or not! XD
Posted Apr 22, 2008 11:23 am PT
wow! Now that is an eventful trip to work...

Also glad to hear it wasn't serious!!

The song playing was definitely ironic!!

Well when you decide to smoke it to a song, you do it right. Sounds like the stage effects went a little hay wire there. At least is wasn't anything too serious and I'm glad you are okay. Wonder if the song had anything to with it. I'll have to find that song so I can listen to the song that smoked you car.

_overdose: You know, I've really wanted a smoke recently, but not like that....

Yuna: *hugs too* Yeah, me too. Thanks.

Freya: I know what you mean, but unfortunately the road is quite busy for such a tiny road and I'd have blocked traffic in both directions during rush hour.

Teresa: Finally, someone notices the song reference.

Edge: Seeing as smoke was pouring into the inside of the car through the air vents, I couldn't help but notice.

Dave: Yeah, me too. Thanks.

Nel: I'm just glad it was the stage effects and nothing more sinister. Oh, and I'll add the song to our folder later.

Sounds pretty dangerous! Well it was a good thing it wasn't serious.

Good lord...did you have the oil cap at home or has it been lost? How long do you think the smell is going to linger? Burning Oil doesn't sound like a recommended car freshener scent.
Posted Apr 22, 2008 1:41 pm PT
Haha, coincidence as to what song you were listening to?

Never trust the roads when they're quiet....never.
Posted Apr 22, 2008 2:28 pm PT
Funny story Seriously, I would never have stayed in the car. I would have been too scared to get unconscious or to die with that smoke
Posted Apr 22, 2008 2:35 pm PT
Can you still drive it? Glad you're ok.
Posted Apr 22, 2008 2:46 pm PT
Half-Ghost: Yeah, it's a good thing it wasn't.

Nate: Indeed it is not: The smell is bloody awful. My car still smelled of burnt oil after I finished work. Oh, and I did recover the oil cap: It had gotten lodged in some of the wiring under the bonnet.

Kris: Indeed, I should have known that it things were going too smoothly.... And yeah, the song thing was freaky. What I was listening to never occurred to me until after I'd stopped spluttering on the oil fumes.

Locke: Well it seemed like a better option than stopping all the traffic using that road during rush hour: I'd have been safer in the smoke.

Cecil: Thanks, me too. Oh, and the car is fine, by that way (my Nissan is indestructible ).

Glad your okay

Thanks for the song. Surprisingly, I like it. Was you playing the steering wheel like a drum? For some reason, I can picture that.
Posted Apr 22, 2008 7:42 pm PT
WOW.
So while I read this story, the following thoughts ran through my head (all in exact order):

"Uh-oh, is this an accident story? Did aliens take over Britain? Why's it so quiet? Oh my god, the car's gonna blow up! Wait, no, that can't happen, cause I don't think he'd be telling us here about it. I mean...a car blowing up, one wouldn't be at Gamespot, or would one? Ironic song choice...Oh...it's just oil. Oh, good, thank god! Jake's okay!!"

That's a little dangerous thing to happen. I am glad it wasn't anything serious. And, honestly, I am with queen above on your creepy narration. You should be writing script for horror movies.
Posted Apr 22, 2008 10:39 pm PT
Well the way that was going I was thinking the worst lol. It sounds like you just have a mess to clean up now. Also like others have pointed out you should be writing stories. You had me hooked very well done. I'm not sure to many could pull off what you just did lol. All that for a simple oil cap ha ha ha ha .

legend_cloud: Thanks.

Nel: Not at that moment, but it has been known. *wonders whether you're secretly a member of the Spanish Inquisition*

Celes: I'm glad that it kept you on the edge of your seat like that: It means that I actually did a better job of writing it than I thought. Oh and thanks, it's really nice to know that everyone cares this much.

Kain: Wow, you too? You guys are beginning to make me wish that I'd actually put some effort in at school.

Stefan: I'm glad you enjoyed it too. Though there is a degree of skill in spinning a yarn, it helps that the best drama is found in real life.

Why are you caught up in this series of unfortunate events?
Posted Apr 23, 2008 6:03 am PT
You'll just have to keep wondering my friend. Remember, I can't tell all my secrets, now can I.
Posted Apr 23, 2008 10:38 am PT
Ron: Well I've been around long enough now to know that these things usually work in cycles. All I have to do is to keep soldiering on until my luck turns again.

Nel: But I was only asking you to tell me one of them.
Posted Apr 23, 2008 11:14 am PT
You'll just have to keep guessing I might be working for more than one, you never know.
Posted Apr 24, 2008 4:51 am PT
O_O... wonders about Nel now...
Posted Apr 24, 2008 8:18 am PT
I know what you mean, Teresa. I don't think I know Nel anymore.
Posted Apr 24, 2008 3:20 pm PT
Ha, with the way this was going, I thought you were gonna end by saying your car sorta blew up or somethin. What a relief. But, um, hope your car is ok
Posted Apr 24, 2008 6:33 pm PT
Nel grins wickedly, then laughs, hehehehe has Teresa and Jake wondering now. Whahaahaaaaaa! good, good. very good.*snickers* *pats self on back* *congraluates self on doing good job*
Posted Apr 25, 2008 11:21 am PT
Hmm... now Nel scares me!!!

*hides under table*
Posted Apr 25, 2008 1:09 pm PT
Reno: Thanks, and yeah, the car is okay. Smells a bit once it's been running for a few minutes, though....

Teresa: You know, I think Nel has lost the plot. Maybe it's old age? I reckon it's best just to smile and nod at her.

Nel: *smiles and nods at you*
Posted Apr 25, 2008 7:04 pm PT
I'm glad you're okay bro.
Posted Apr 26, 2008 1:14 am PT
Yea, it's old age.

*mumbles under breath, 'if I could only remember where I left that script!'*
Posted Apr 26, 2008 3:39 pm PT
Script??? You mean this was all scripted?

*thinks Nel has lost more than the script*

*smiles and nods at Nel*
Posted Apr 26, 2008 3:48 pm PT
hhh34c: Thanks.

Nel: *thinks you should hire a new script writer*

Teresa: Yeah, so it would seem. Rather badly, too.
