Well as I've already told at least a couple of you, I've bought an absolute truckload of games recently (well about ten anyway
). I just wish I had more time to play them, though that being said, when I did have the time to play them, I didn't have the money to keep buying them (it's a cruel world, I tell you
).
Well I've been playing Lost Odyssey, which I've so far found to be reasonably enjoyable if somewhat uninspired; It's a game that would have been great had it been released ten years ago. There isn't a much new in the gameplay save the odd small nuance, though that isn't a bad thing in itself as the game mechanics themselves are very good.
For anyone that actually plays RPGs for their stories, well you'll likely be disappointed with this one as it's a little dull: A point that is forcibly rammed home by the Thousand Years of Dreams, where the stories are far better. The dreams however, good as they are, do hurt the pacing of the game somewhat (though Lost Odyssey is a lot better than Blue Dragon in this regard).
On a side note, I've also just encountered the one of the most annoying things ever in a JRPG: Enemies that steal (with a 100 percent steal rate) and immediately leave the battle. It's so frustrating when an accessory gets stolen, especially given that some characters learn skills from them.
In shorter gaming sessions, I've been playing Guitar Hero III (and I've also revisited Guitar Hero II on occasions). I'd recommend that anyone who hasn't tried a Guitar Hero game yet stop reading this and go out and buy one (but not the "Rocks the 80s" installment
).
I like Guitar Hero III, and it definitely has it's merits over the previous games: The visuals are sharper, there are more official tracks and the hammer-ons and pulls-offs are a lot less fussy than in previous games (I'd go as far as to say they are a little too generous now). However, I was a bit disappointed with the set list (especially the bonus tracks, which were much better in the second game) and getting to the end of some of the tracks seems to be more a test of physical endurance now than it was in previous games, and thus is a little less fun (never mind the carpal tunnel syndrome
).
Anyway, I've warbled on for far longer than I originally intended to, so I'll leave it here for now. ![]()

I kinda enjoyed rock's the 80's, but others are much better. Never played GH3, but the gameplay videos speak for it...
You're right: "Rocks the 80s" isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd definitely recommend that the the others are bought first.
It is bad that when you can finally afford games, there is no time to play! I got 5 in the last week and 4 more coming.
Ok..Ok... you convinced me... I'll buy GH3 later today when the stores open... Of course who knows when I'll have time (or 2 hands) to play
If I got GH, it would be for the "Rock the 80s"
My boyfriend has LO and I watched him play it for about 45 minutes and it turned me off wanting the game for myself. It was a slow and agonizing trip down dream lane. *shrug* I guess some people are into that kind of gameplay though.
But, from what you say, the story isn't that good either. And,I was going to play Lost Odyssey only for it's story as well.
Guess, I am leaving the plans for getting Lost Odyssey and will instead get Mass Effect. Much better,IMO.
I've never played a Guitar Hero game...probably never will either.
_Mana_:
Teresa: Glad I was finally able to steer you down the path to enlightenment.
Maz:
Nel: I suppose it's quite possible that LO could end up on the PC, though I've no idea whether a PC version is in the works or not. As for a "Rocks the 70s" edition of GH, well horses for courses, I guess.
Cecil: Yeah, I tend to dip in and out of the GH games. I'll play them for a week or two, and then I'll take a break from them for several months. I'm not one of these nutcases that takes them very seriously.
As for LO, well I didn't say it was bad, just uninspired. It's a solid enough RPG, but unremarkable in every way.
legend_cloud:
Balthier: Ahhh, you really should give one a try: It took a fair amount of persuasion to get me to try it too and now I have, I really enjoy it.
Rikku:
As I've said elsewhere, I thought LO was reasonably good, but I can understand why you were put off having seen it.
Celes: Wow, that's high praise indeed.
Kain: Yeah, I thought Mass Effect was a much better game. It also has its flaws, but it's also very ambitious and very well executed for the most part.
Stefan: Thanks.
Kris: I really can't understand why so many people rate the story so highly. I honestly believe that the main story is badly shown up by the short stories that make up "The Thousand Years of Dreams", but as Blace said, these also ruin the pacing of the game.
You really should try out a Guitar Hero game: I was sceptical at first but I found that I really enjoy them.
Blace_07: Yeah, I read your review on LO and I'd agree with it wholeheartedly, even down to the score you gave it. And yeah, that's the exact part of the game I'm at. Thanks for the advice.
Half-Ghost: Well I don't think much of the story on LO. The gameplay is prefectly fine (if unoriginal), though. Whether you'll like it, I don't know. Don't expect it to be Game of the Year, at any rate.
Freya: I honestly felt that it was pretty uninspired. As I've said elsewhere, the short stories that make up the "Thousand Years of Dreams" are very well done, but the main story is rather bland and uninteresting, much like the protagonists.
Edge: Yeah, most of my friends in real life would agree, too.
Blace_07: I'd agree with every word of that. I can't really add anything to that without repeating myself, so I'll leave it at that for now.
Locke:
Ron: Yeah, I know the feeling.
Stefan: Well I never meant to suggest that Lost Odyssey is a bad game. Far from it, in fact: It's actually quite good. There's nothing new here at all, but the gameplay is very well crafted. However, it is deficient in others areas (most notably in the story and the characters) and it does feel somewhat "old hat", if you're familiar with that particular expression.
By the way, I love Oblivion and I strongly urge you to at least give it a try before you decide whether you like it or not. And you're also free to go as far off-topic as you wish here as far as I'm concerned.
Oh, and yes, Guitar Hero is tooooooo cool!
So, have fun S_Jake ...
I had pretty high hopes for Lost Odyssey, so I do feel a little let down. It'd probably seem like a better game if one was to approach it with lower expectations. It's definitely not worth buying an X360 for, though.
hhh34c: Thanks, I will: Even if I do tire of Lost Odyssey, I still have plenty of choice.
I'm interested to see that you're playing Fable; I bought it when it was first released over here and I loved it (despite how short it was). What version are you playing: The original or The Lost Chapters?
