The cable network G4 has a show called XPlay which primarily reviews games. Twice a year XPlay has a "Best of year" show that grants the standard awards of "Best RPG/Adventure" or "Game of the Year." At the end of the year is the standard one featuring picks from the staff. The other, called Gphoria, is in the summer and is a viewer's choice show.

The regular voting is not open on G4TV.com yet but this year they came up with too many possible Games of the Year so there is a special voting session to narrow it down. The contenders are:

My pick: Halo 3

Why? It is the most complete package on the list, offering not only beautiful visuals, an intriguing story, excellently designed campaign, magnificent music, and superbly balanced and expansive multiplayer but also unique features to enhance all of those. The meta-game, skulls, and online co-op for up to four players add enormous replayability to the campaign mode, Forge and highly customizable and varied gametypes make multiplayer possibilities almost endless, and saved films with the ability to record clips and take hi-res screenshots improve the whole game and make you wonder why don't more games have this feature. On top of all that it incorporates what is almost undisputedly the matchmaking and partying system ever, the stupidly obvious veto feature (stupid in that you wonder why Bungie thought of it first), and Halo is among the few next-gen games that actually let you use all four controllers. And there's more, there's tremendous online support for the community. Players are encouraged to share their custom content and can advertise it online, content can even be flagged for download from Bungie.net. Almost forgot to mention Halo's trademark incorporation of vehicles, seamless transition from first person shooting to third person driving. Another thing I should mention before moving on, how much pure fun Halo is to play. Think of it this way, most games are built around a fundamental innovation or design principle (cover for Gears of War, conversation wheel for Mass Effect, realism in Call of Duty etc.) and the Halo series is built around being as fun and satisfying as possible.

All that, and only a few flaws. A rather short campaign (average shooter length), the somewhat annoying Cortana and Gravemind cominiques, and frustrating limitations to campaign saved films. It also would have been nice to have a custom games hub where players could host and advertise or just look for something interesting to play, but no console shooter has that so I won't call that a flaw.

Short and simple: Excellently designed, no glaring (or even leering) flaws, and oh so many extra features that actually add to and improve the overall experience.

My message: go and vote for Gphoria's Game of the Year, if I didn't convince you that it is Halo 3 then I think you're wrong and possibly stupid. I'll try to avoid the flaming of posts, the egging of houses, or the hiring of hitmen.

PS: The shrinking in the last row of games was unintentional, these are unedited pictures from GameSpot arranged in G4's order.

PPS: Also, comments on your pick and reasoning are appreciated and requested.

Tommorrow is Bungie Day. The seventh day of the seventh month.

That means gamerpics and a dashboard theme available tommorrow only for free. Additionally the map Cold Storage is released tommorrow, also for free. But that will remain free forever.

There's been a movement in the Halo community to raise the Campaign kill count to seven billion by Bungie Day. As of now it is 6,922,391,429 so spread the word and play Crow's Nest or Cortana on Heroic. A lot.
