Once upon a time, I was hoping to get my special lady Majesco's DS game full of New York Times crossword puzzles for her birthday. Unfortunately, the birthday came and went before the game hit shelves, so she got Cooking Mama for the Wii instead. It's.... ok.

Undeterred, I check back on the game's official page every now and then to see if an official release date has been announced (GamEBstop's listing it as May 15th). No dates to be found over there, but one can spot the ESRB rating in the lower-right hand corner, which would indicate the game is ready for sale. And thus the reason for this entry!

You see, New York Times Crosswords for the DS is rated T for Teen. It's a game of 1,000 crossword puzzles. That's it. It appears somewhere within these hundreds of word games are "Drug Reference, Mild Language, (and) Mild Suggestive Themes."

Again, these are crossword puzzles. Taken from the New York Times.

Think of it what you will. Personally, I blame Will Shortz. That dude's been pushing his wordier simulators on America's children for too long.

Edit: I just had to rename this post. Apparently I used the title "Bad Words " a while back. I'm glad to see what Jeff and I were so concerned about back then never came to pass. Phew.

New York Times Crosswords will get a 9.7 from GameSpot and will be Game of the Year for 2007. You heard it here first!

Just kidding, but I hope she's digging Cooking Mama, Rich!

suggestive themes?

Wow, interesting. Kinda makes you wonder. Maybe Jack Thompson should go after that. It's got "adult" language in it and it's for kids. *rolls eyes*

Uh oh.......I'm pretty sure we have crossword puzzles available to clients at my job, and I don't think there is a warning. Not sure if they're "NY Times" crossword puzzles though, so it might be legit. I would like to think that any crossword puzzle, including the "NY Times" would be rated E for Everyone.

WhoA!!! Better go get grandma of the cross word- she's pretty sensitve anyway...
Posted Apr 19, 2007 5:38 am PT
That's censorship gone mad. Are they gonna have to age check everyone who tries to buy a copy of The New York Times now as well?!

Good to know that the ESRB is relentless in its quest to keep crosswords out of the hands of youngsters. As FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III says, "Don't become jailbirds; stay away from crosswords."

maybe its T becasue its hard for some people...if that makes sense, some teenagers can't do those crosswrod puzzles.

When I saw just the title of your post, I thought it was going to be a sequel to the post of yours about that word.

You see I remember that post, because I like to threaten you with sharing the word with everyone.

But I would never do that.

I will go pick up that game though, I love me some Will Shortz!

You know this is all Jack Thompson's doing. First GTA now this?! Is there now end to maniacal ways?

I go to college at Indiana University, and this guy Will Shortz is like the poster boy for the university. Enigmatology? Dude is pompous if you ask me.
