I will now go on record here as saying that I am completely against anything Harry Potter. I say this mostly because for some unknown reason there are basically entire nations that obsess over anything Harry Potter related and yet it is completely undeserving. There are so many wonderful, amazingly well written books out there and yet barely ever get read, especially in todays society in which it has become more and more rare to see someone, young or old, reading a book that isn't of course Harry Potter. This as well as the fact that J.K. Rowling is insanely rich and yet still attempts to draw out every single penny from her undeservingly adoring fans through overpriced books and merch. This may have to do with the publisher as well but at this point both parties are at fault. It may have been smart to push the first novel as strongly as it was simply because you can never be too sure whether your success will be short lived but with all of the following novels it is simply ridiculous and I would hope that you people would be smart enough to realize that she is not the only author out there. Once again I will say that there are so many great books out there to be read that even I myself have not yet read. and Alan Rickaman is awesome. Snape kills Dumbledore!

Update - this is the simple reason for that original "revision" comment I put in the title as it is easy to look into more than what was written (also note that I put this in the category Opinion) First and foremost I never said in any form that the author wasn't worthy of praise for her writing talents as she is in fact a good author. As for the books themselves I only mentioned that they were undeserving of so much praise (which I still hold to be true) not that they themselves were poorly written. I merely meant to imply my distaste for those who would stand in line to pay $60 for a book in a series they only started reading due to the immense numbers of others who had done the same (given in to societal expectations) and although I know that this can't necessarily be drawn from my remarks and that it is often hard to understand intent in simple writing, I obviously never meant to say that ALL Harry Potter fans don't read other authors, in fact this would be quite stupid of me to say considering I personally have friends who read both Harry Potter books as well as many others. and as for my "biased thoughts", all opinions are biased as they are based on your own life experiences although I will say mine were a little rash. also were the books ever planned to retail at $60 before they (again both the author and the distributor) new that such a large audience was willing to pay such a price??? The answer, I think, is no. If J.K. Rowling was as she says she was before the books were written (by this I meen poor) then why would you risk alienating people from your last chance at success with such high prices? With this I could be wrong and of course the pricing scheme may have nothing to do with the author herself although I can only assume she has some rights to her own works. Alan Rickman is still awesome! and Snape kills Dumbledore...again

Any book series that's able to make reading mainstream is alright with me. Then again, no matter how popular the series has gotten, I must say that there's still a large number of people out there who don't read for fun .

I really have to disagree with everything that you've just said, except for saying that there are so many other great books out there, that go so underappreciated. As for HP, have you actually ready any of the books ? I mean, I really hope that you haven't only watched the movies (because if you made your opinion off of that, then you really have no rights to critisize the books, which are far better). Asuming that you have read all of the books, have you been paying attention to the story line ? You just said/claimed that the books were only being pushed along, but are you aware that the next book is the last one, and that the series was ALWAYS meant to be 7 books long, from the very beginning, as planned by the author. Also, did you know that J.K. Rowling was not always rich. As a matter of fact, she was living off of welfare with her daugher (and I think that she was staying with her sister during the time in which she wrote the first book). Harry Potter is a great series, and I don't find it overrated. Its true that there are many books out there that get underrated, but its unfortunately something that just happens. Its not like you can blame Harry Potter for this, because if anything, its only gotten more people into reading, which would get more people to read some of those lesser recognized novels. Its your opinion if you don't like Harry Potter, but you can't just critisize it, simply because its popular.

Books, in general and as a whole, are underrated. People of the world today do not want to spend their time reading "boring words on a page" when they could be sitting in front of the TV eating a bag of chips half-thinking because everything is presented clear as day--they don't have to derive anything from what they intake.

This is one of the reasons I got so hooked on Death Note. It might be a television anime, but one must pay attention. Nothing is ever presented simply to be taken, it's open to interpretation.

I'm not a Harry Potter fanatic, I read it simply because I need something to read and I like being caught up with the rest of the world. J.K. Rowling has my kudos for making a name for herself in the world, but I don't consider her one of the great authors of our time. I consider her a popular author of our time. She's taken up a decade of my life. Time to move on, world.

I agree with Ensatsu-ken on many points; Harry Potter is a wonderfully penned series, but fame ruined it for many readers. I like the small community feeling with something less known with less theatrics surrounding it.

I won't be waiting up for it tonight. My mother will be picking it up tomorrow morning while I'm white water rafting. ^_~
