I generally go for heavy-beat rock by men or male groups; however, without a doubt the prettiest song I ever heard is "Gypsy" by Suzanne Vega. Maybe the next prettiest, and I am somewhat embarrassed to admit this, is "Stars Are Blind" by Paris Hilton.
I adore Paris' music and, having noticed her for that reason, think she is adorable herself also, despite (or maybe even because of) all the vitriol that so many people enjoy heaping on her. I like her sense of humor for playing the sleazy bimbo role that she has created for herself, much like a running joke on "Saturday Night Live". I also respect the courage it took for her to jump onto the music stage when she knew that so many people hated her and were just waiting for more fuel for ridicule. Did you notice that the music critic for Time magazine gave her a very positive review? Said basically that he WANTED to hate her, but had to face it, the girl is good.
"Stars Are Blind" and "Screwed" I think are thematic counterpoints - Paris' way of showing two different approaches a girl might take to generate some interest from a guy she wants.
In "SAB", the girl wants to start a relationship that will progress to true love. She is a bit stand-offish but also very sweet and flirtatious. [The rhyming of "naughty" and "body", and the little pause between "angel" and "too" - both strokes of genius.] She keeps repeating, wistfully and sexily at the same time, nothing guaranteed, but "Maybe I'm perfect for you". In "Screwed", the girl is just completely throwing herself at the guy, trying to take him away from his current girlfriend (the "woman from hell") by whatever means are necessary. She is saying "Look, I know I lost you (I'm screwed), so I'll just forget the niceties and come right out and say it - you can have me TONIGHT and Baby you will learn what it means to just really be free (sexually of course). Give me a chance to prove it. What do I have to do to beat that other b***h out and get you? I'm willing - ANYTHING it takes." She seems to be focused on the competition, not HIM.
The way "SAB" starts is beautiful and complex - just like the girl herself - the soft strain, then the heavy beat, then the wonderful back-melody, then the super rimshot, then .... Herself starts to sing in that (holy c**p!!), soft, breathy, sexy voice of an angel. "Screwed", on the other hand, jumps right into the heavy beat (the song mimicking the girl herself) and then she starts in with an irritating voice to whine and complain - she's all "Why is this happening to ME, why won't he pay attention to ME"? The "SAB" girl has a more outward focus - "...maybe I'm perfect for YOU".
One of the best things about "SAB" is the way they vary the rhythm and pace: Slow and drawn out: "I ........ cooould be.......your confidaaante", then fast: "just oooone of your girrrrlfriends, but", then slow and drawn out: "I ..... knooow thaaat's ...... not what you waaaant", then fast: "if tomoooorrow the wooooorld ends". Just wonderful. The "Screwed" girl is much simpler and so is her song.
"Even though the gods are crazy, even though the stars are blind - if you show me real love Baby, I'll show you mine." Folks, THAT is a memorable line - right up there with "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave". This girl is a poet and a thinker: "The world is chaotic and sometimes shows no logic, and we seem to be all alone in an uncaring universe, but we could beat all that if we just love each other." The girl who is "Screwed" is no poet and no thinker - just upset that her appeals to the guy's baser instincts aren't succeeding - if she has a memorable line, it's: "I'm just not gettin' through to the lover in you". The "SAB" girl's promise of a physical relationship is much more subtle and sweet, in another memorable line: "I can make you nice and naughty, .... got a heart and soul and body, let's see what this love can do."
Here's another great thing about the lyrics in "SAB" - right before the chorus begins she always sings "Oh... no", but every time it has a different meaning. The first time she is saying "you seem to appreciate me better than all the other guys, but am I satisfied with that? Oh...no, I want more for us." The second time it's a playful and flirtatious chuckle - "Have you been dreaming about me at all? Oh....no". The last time it's even more playful and flirtatious - "You know, we're getting closer, things could get physical...Oh...no..NO". You can practically see him making a move and her jumping away - not ready yet.
Well here is something a bit complex in "Screwed": after the girl sings about the guy "needing someone to have a little fun", she sings (and actually very sweetly rather than whiny) "I could be the perfect girl for you to xxxx". I can't quite make that last word out - some of the lyrics sites have "love" and some have "ruin". It certainly isn't "love" - could be "ruin" though. So - why would the girl say that? Is she inviting the guy to, as might be said, use her and throw her away? But given her personality, that certainly wouldn't make HER feel that she was "ruined". So maybe she just believes the guy might LIKE to think he could do that to her?
OK I admit to not being able to decode women anyway, and probably am not truly qualified to comment on these songs at all. How about somebody posting a woman's point of view on them?
Useless talentless bimbo heiress slut brainless attention-addict or not, I think PH has given us a real masterpiece in this pair of songs.
Not to mention - when she doesn't glam herself up and just acts normal and unaffected - the woman is absolutely gorgeous.
And that's what I think - RedFan666.
