Wilbert Awdry is the man who wrote The Railway Series, the books that would evolve into the Thomas the Tank Engine TV show. He wrote twenty six books, all of which are classics, as well as a few individual episodes for the show. Because he grew up around railways, he was more than qualified to write about trains. Once his son was ill with the measles, his imagination took off. His first story was about an old engine, who we know today as Edward. Twenty five more books would follow, eventually a TV show aired, and the rest is history. Thomas is now one of the most popular children's shows ever made, although it has strayed drastically from Awdry's original ideas.
Before his death in 1997, Rev. Awdry was awarded an OBE for his works. How did Thomas evolve from a bedtime story to a worldwide pheonomenon? The answer is the greatness of the Reverend Wilbert Awdry.

One of the best narrators ever. Ringo Starr narrated Thomas the Tank Engine for seasons 1 and 2, but I think it would have been great if he stuck around for a couple more seasons. He was deifinitely the best narrator in the UK version of the show, and probably has two of the three American narrators beat too (George Carlin is my all time favorite). He was the one that gave the original characters their first voices, and many of them were imitated by later story tellers. But not only was he one of the best Thomas narrators, he was part of one of the greatest bands ever. He is an all around, amazing person.

Altough Ringo Starr was the orginal narrator, I have always liked Carlin better. He narrated the third and fourth seasons of the show, which I think was the golden age of Thomas, and also did a pretty good job of renarrating the first and second seasons. I remember watching him on Shining Time Station as Mr. Conductor when I was a child, and waiting for the Thomas story to come on during the show. After George Carlin stopped narrating Thomas the Tank Engine, the show went through five seasons with a couple of relatively weak narrators. And although I don't think it will happen, I wish he could come back and narrate another season or two. I think it would add another classic element to the show.
