Yesterday evening I noticed that my PC was making a strange beeping sound, but I didn't think much of it. I thought that if it's going to fail on me, there's nothing I can do about it and if it won't, I'll throw the PC out of the window sooner or later because of the extremely annoying beeping. Well, today when I tried to boot it up again, the whole thing was completely dead. No lights whatsoever turned on, the only response was the beeping sound. Unsuprisingly, the sound originated from the Nexus power supply. I wonder how long warranties they have. I really wouldn't want to be spending any money on a new PSU right now.

I've got the Special Edition of Empire: Total War on my desk, but I guess that will just have to wait. At least this gives me time to play Ookami on Wii and Final Fantasy III on DS. I've even bought Secret of Mana and Super Mario RPG from Virtual Console but I doubt I'll be playing them any time soon. I first need to finish Paper Mario, which is also on my Wii games to-play-list.

6 hours into Okami, it seems to be a very fun action adventure. If I have one gripe with the game, it's the voice acting, or rather lack of it. I can understand that the game was probably made with a rather small budget, but the strange mumble gibberish is even more annoying than completely mute characters. Now I skip most of the dialog because there's no way to disable the ''voice acting'' and my ears can only take it in small doses.

Final Fantasy III on the other hand is as classic as a JRPG gets, in good and bad. Mainly in bad. Most of the time it's still very enjoyable, you could just do a lot better with your money. Next up is Dragon Quest IV and FFIV and Chrono Trigger after that. If I played the best games first, I'd enjoy the good ones even less.

Sorry about your computer, but at least you have a list of really good games that you're going to play in the future!

Computers are lame. Lamer than FDR's legs

I feel you man, I have had so many computer problems of late. Best of luck

Damn, man... Sorry to hear that, I feel your pain. If you need a tip on a great and silent powersupply, just ask.
Sometimes having a couple of consoles and a PC is hard to justify, but when one of them dies on you, you're kinda glad you own something else to play on.

out of all those games, I'd be playing Secret of Mana =P
Posted Mar 19, 2009 10:59 am PT
Dan - And I still have Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3, Burnout Paradise and tons of other games I still need to play. When will I have the time?
Doug - I still feel like it's worth all the hassle because so many games come only out on PC or simply are more enjoyable on one. But I definitely wouldn't mind if they were more user friendly.
artur - What do you recommend? I was thinking about a 450W Corsair.
Alli - I try to play only one RPG at a time, otherwise I wouldn't have any time left for sleeping

Power supplies for PCs are pretty easy to swap out. The only tricky thing is making sure the wires are bundled up so they don't block the air flow (a few zip ties do the trick there).
Posted Mar 19, 2009 11:38 am PT
what special edition of Total War includes?
Posted Mar 19, 2009 11:55 am PT
Ork - My wires are currently very well organized so it annoys me to swap them.
Predator - Just a couple more units. I bought it because the case was cooler and it only costed a couple euros more.

I feel the same way about the FF's on the DS. They are still classics, but I got about 2/3 of the way through FF VI and just couldn't take one more random encounter and I had to stop. I'm definitely going to get Chrono Trigger though.
Posted Mar 19, 2009 12:18 pm PT
@polsci1503 - have you ever heard of the moogle charm? It's an accessory in FFVI that eliminates random encounters when worn. I'd hate to think of you missing out on the ending to one of the greatest RPGs of all time after you got so far.

I've heard FF III is a bit of a grind fest. True?
Posted Mar 19, 2009 1:01 pm PT
Well, RK, depends on your needs. Corsair's stuff is great, but Seasonic just released an 850W supply that is a nerds dream come true.

Go to http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp

See what your needs are, 450W might be a little on the light side for a gamer. Depends on your rig of course. A rule of thumb is that you should have 25% more Watts than full load. Another rule of thumb is use as much on a PSU and a case as you feel is justifiable. Those things last longer than any other components ever will, especially if the quality is superb. An i7 rig with decent components is easily 500W (if you OC that is...)

@johnsteed7: aahhhh... I'll check into that. It is an excellent game... loved the whole half human/half mech thing. The combat is pretty complicated, I knew I was making it through but only scratching the surface of what I could do.
Posted Mar 19, 2009 4:14 pm PT
The mute button turn sit off quickly effectively!
Posted Mar 19, 2009 6:13 pm PT
My condolences on the death of your power supply. Corsair makes good ones, and they tend to be quiet. One of my personal favorites is the brand Coolmax... never had a problem with them, and reasonably priced, at least here in the US. (Remind me... you're in Finland?)
Posted Mar 19, 2009 6:17 pm PT
You should listen to music while you play. I'm listening to Death while playing Enchanted Arms.
Posted Mar 19, 2009 7:19 pm PT
I played FF3 on my DS for a while, probably about 10 hours. But I got a little bored, I was grinding purely to increase my job status or whatever it was, but the combat to do so was boring.

Too bad about the PC

Bummer about the computer.

Couldn't agree more with your main gripe against Okami. It was annoying to me at six hours in. Was getting unbearable at 20, and was completely intolerable after 40 hours.

I never did manage to finish the game, which is a pity because it was very interesting and a fun gameplay dynamic. May try again on the Wii.

Edit: Also, agree with Alli on Secret of Mana.

You're right about FFIII - it's a little too archaic for me to enjoy, even with a graphics upgrade. IV manages to be developed enough in plot and gameplay that I can enjoy it in T-ride long doses. Okami is a great game, too. I have it for the PS2, but that title was simply meant for playing with the Wiimote. I hope you enjoy it (and I hope you have a nice enough picture on your television to do it credit!)

FF III ain't so bad until you get to the end. Without spoiling anything (just purely giving readers an idea of what to expect), you have to go through about 2 hours of content without the ability to save. I got to the final boss and wasn't strong enough to defeat it, so I lost all that hard earned progress. That pretty much ended the game for me there, but I plan on grinding and trying again some time soon.
Posted Mar 19, 2009 11:23 pm PT
Scott - I'm a veteran MMO gamer so I'm quite used to grind
PJ - It sure is, just like every JRPG of its time.
artur - With my current rig 450-500W should be quite enough. And I'm not really planning to upgrade this particular rig either. 850W would be a massive overkill for E6600 and 8800 GTS. Foolz3h - I'm way too lazy to search for the remote controller during every cutscene.
Chili - Aye, I be a Finn. Unfortunately we don't have the Coolmax brand here.
kingkilla - I actually always stick to the in-game music. I just feel like it's the game's job to provide you with good music to listen to and I want the best atmosphere possible.
bacchus - The job feature itself is pretty interesting, if it just didn't require so much grinding.
Jim - Sounds a bit like a waste of time to start the game again on another platform when you are already 40 hours in. How intolerable do you think the voices will get after 60 hours?
poetsoul - My Samsung definitely gets the job done. It would still probably look better on a high-end SDTV but I can't complain, Okami is one beautiful game.
Al - Ouch. Who makes designs like that? Oh, yes...
Posted Mar 20, 2009 1:14 am PT
Well, some reqire more grinding than others
Posted Mar 20, 2009 2:40 am PT
Well, you might need that awesome PSU in 5 yrs or so, who knows? You might want to read this

artur - That's a cool article but I don't think any of the top three brands can be found in Finland.
Posted Mar 20, 2009 6:36 am PT
Damn, I see that now, it's a very US centric article...
Just go for the latest Corsair 450W supply then, it's a quality product that has gotten several awards. Btw, what case do you have, just wondering if it's a p182 or not.
Posted Mar 20, 2009 7:24 am PT
Btw, Corsair TX 650W has gotten great reviews as well, it's not THAT much more expensive... Just to be on the safe side? Lol.
Or Seasonic M12-II PSU 500W. A little expensive, but you know you're getting a quality product and modular cables = less cable clutter and better airflow in your case. + it looks purtier. haha

Is the beeping sound from the power supply a common thing for all power supply makers to let us know its going dead or it is dead?
Posted Mar 20, 2009 9:05 am PT
artur - I have a Nexus Breeze. It realy sucks but I can't complain as it was free (in a way at least)
Jd - I doubt it's some kind of warning sound. I just happen to get it.
Posted Mar 20, 2009 4:48 pm PT
To begin with: If you want a good JRPG and you have a DS, try to get The World Ends With You. I am on my second play-through of it (New Game + FTW!), and it has made it into my "Top 5 RPGs of All Time List" without even breaking a sweat. It's a fantastic game in every way.

As for power supply... if you post what is available in Finland, we'll post reviews. Sound good?
Posted Mar 20, 2009 9:23 pm PT
I'll get to World Ends With You some day, I just want to get the worse games out of the way first

We've got Antec, Asus, Be Quiet, Chieftec, Cooler Master, Corsair, Enermax, Gigabyte, Nexus, OCZ, Seasonic, SilverStone, Thermaltake, Xilence and Zalman.
Posted Mar 21, 2009 2:38 am PT
Please send us pictures of you blowing up the computer.
Posted Mar 21, 2009 4:23 am PT
Ah, if you can get Corsair then you're good. Zalman and Thermaltake also make good stuff.
Posted Mar 21, 2009 11:03 am PT
Wow that sucks, hope you get it fixed asap without too much hassle.
