My mother called me a week ago and said that she is looking for a new computer monitor to go with the Lenovo Thinkpad laptop she's buying for my father. Thinkpads are office laptops so they come with a docking bay and my father is going to spend hundreds, if not thousands, of hours in front of that laptop writing books and my mother wants it to be as easy as possible to plug in a larger screen and an ergonomic mouse and keyboard. And as awesome as my mother is, she said that she will buy a monitor for me too. After a couple days of searching, we ended up buying two BenQ G2200WT's. Everything about the screen is average but it's the best I could find for 150 euros from the local stores (my mother preferred it to stay under 200 euros). And anything is a huge improvement over my old screen. LCD monitors from the beginning of this decade aren't exactly known for their superior image quality. At least it still works and has only one dead pixel.

If you haven't noticed yet, I made myself another new banner. You might remember that I wasn't exactly fond of the last one, but this is something I can imagine using for a bit longer, unless it starts to depress me too much. And I'm of course giving away a virtual cookie to the person who knows where it's from. Here's a hint: how come many of the best anti-war films are animations?

I'm finally done with Grand Theft Auto 4, or at least with the story, I still have plenty of free-roaming to do. For the first month after the release, I barely even touched the game because of horrible performance. My two year old rig isn't exactly top of the line anymore but I still expect to be able to play a console game on at least medium settings. So far I've been able to max out every console to PC port. But no, if I wanted playable frame rates with tolerable amount of stuttering, I had to set every setting down to the lowest - and this was with my old 17'' screen. Now with the second patch out, the game actually looks better on my PC than on consoles, and with playable performance. Even with all the technical issues, it's still a great game and very much worth playing. But unless you have a PC from the future, go with either of the console versions if possible.

As long as Gamestop/EB Games have been in Finland, I've pretty much hated them. Selling pre-owned Wii games for 50 euros is a total ripoff. That's how much new Wii games are supposed to cost. And rest of their games aren't any cheaper. At least that's what I thought until I started searching their PC game bargain bins. Even if most of the games in the bins are total garbage, you can find some incredible deals with enough patience. For instance, I picked up Unreal Anthology (Unreal, Unreal 2, Unreal Tournament, UT2004), Condemned and Gothic 3. The three games costed individually 6 euros each but thanks to the 'Buy 3 for the price of 2' deal I got them for an incredibly cheap price of 12 euros. I had already owned Gothic 3 before but I did unspeakable things to the disc after a bug completely ruined my save 50 hours into the game. It's been a couple years since then so I'm ready to give it a second try. Then I heard that Gamestop's '3 for 2' deal concerns every PC game that costs 15 euros or less. That means you could get World in Conflict, Company of Heroes and Medieval 2 Total War for a total price of 20 euros. I'm really starting to wonder what's the point of buying PC games at launch when they are that cheap after just a couple years.

P.S. I'm leaving for Munich in a few days. Does anyone know any places I should visit?

It seems every other blog you're going on vacation somewhere....are you a porn star or something?

Do pornstars travel a lot? If so, I wanna become one.
Congrats with a new monitor.
PC games do cost very little compared to console titles after a couple of yrs and they are patched up by the time you buy them. Two good reasons to wait with the purchase.

GTA IV's performance issues are indeed the one thing that can ruin the game for some people. Fortunately my rig was able to handle it decently at 1680*1050 once I upgraded my video card (256 MB 8600GT to a 512MB Radeon 4670), even if my CPU is still holding me back a little.

While there's no denying that the game should've been better optimized, I've been enjoying it way too much to hold a grudge against it.

smerlus - How did you know? Nah, but there could be multiple explanations for that. The most plausible is the one that I live in an apartment my parents own. I save a lot of money every month when I don't have to pay rent for them. And I happen to love traveling so I'm always searching for cheap vacations.
artur -
SYdogg - Some people seem to be overreacting, it's not the first time a great game has tons of technical issues. Just look at Gothic 3, it took a long time to make it playable and now people love it.
PJ - I mainly use Play.com for my gaming purchases. Still a couple years ago I bought everything from Play-Asia because of the low value of dollar, but now I have to take advantage of the sterling.
Alli - There are always too many games coming out. I still need to play Sins of Solar Empire, Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3 from last year.
Foolz3h - That's a start
Seth - Bingo! *hands over a cookie*

New Wii games here are usually $100. I tracked Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess on ebay, and it went for $76 plus postage. On ebay, not second hand at a shop where you expect to pay more. What? It's two years old.

Have fun on holiday.

"I'm really starting to wonder what's the point of buying PC games at launch when they are that cheap after just a couple years."

But seriously, who can wait that long? Besides, PC games are cheap in Finland compared to console games. And you could always order from Amazon.co.uk. New PC games sell for about €25-30, so even with postage and taxes you end up saving a good chunk of money.

Nice gaming deals there, you could rack up a good collection with consistent prices like that. Although most used pc games sections ive ever seen are like the castoff waste worst of the worst that the industry has ever come up with.

Yes. Oh hell yes. My best days touring Europe were in Munich. I can think of 3 absolutely necessary places to go.

1) Castle Neuschwanstein
King Ludvig II had a penchant for massive, gorgeous castles. This one never got finished because Ludvig was removed from power by his cabinet. (He drowned, by sheer coincidence, not two weeks later in a late-night swimming adventure, along with the very doctor who pronounced him to be insane. No witnesses! Go figure.) Many aspects of the castle are complete, however, and you can stroll through the secret grotto Ludvig built behind his bedroom. You must visit this place. Google Image search it, right now, and you'll see what I mean.

2) The Munich Potato Museum:
There's a tiny little gallery on the south end of town, across from a grocery store and hidden next to an office complex. Within lies glory. You will learn literally everything there is to know about potatoes (called by the aztecs "gold of the Earth" by the way) and giggle softly to yourself as you do so.

3) HoffBar House
Good beer in a 400-year-old beer hall. I visited with my girlfriend and grabbed a pint and watched hundreds of folks sit down and be merry. Good polka music by men in hosen. One couple, very refined in their khakis and buttonups , sat down across from me and ordered a pint. By the end of the night they were snogging like there were no tomorrow... The place has the quality of promoting reckless abandon.

Sorry for the wall of text. I hope you will have as great a time in Munich as I did. Good luck!

Buying games at launch is rarely worth it. Unless it's a multiplayer game that you know your friends are also going to get right away, what's wrong with waiting for the price to go down? The game will still be just as good a year after it comes out.

Whoops, how did I forget to respond?
bacchus - Have you tried Play-Asia? I don't know how it is for you but at least for a Finn like me it's fairly cheap, and it ships anywhere you want. Is it just me or are Nintendo games the slowest to drop in price?
monco - It's great how most brand new games cost 35 euros at Play.com. I remember that when Call of Duty 4 came out, dollar's value was at its lowest and I was able to buy the game for 25 euros (including postage)
GodMode - It's strange how many games I still have to buy even though I've owned almost 300 PC games. Even if I didn't upgrade my PC, it would take years to run out of good games to play.
poetsoul - Thanks for the great list.
Dan - I just wish the same thing happened with Nintendo games. I found an UK store selling the Wii version of Bully for 6 pounds but other than that Wii games can stay incredibly expensive for years, just look at Twilight Princess.

Setho, WWB is a must - great film

RK - go to the central town square in Munich, sit down at one of the bar tables in the square, and drink every single different schnapps on the menu - that's what i did and i'm told i had a whale of a time...

Your Gamestop and EB Games sounds really nice, I can't find a single PC game bargain bin over here.
