Hello everyone! Nice to see you all again!

Life hasn't been very busy for me lately, but that should change soon since school is starting for me in five days. However, I have been playing a game recently to occupy my time. After my last foray into the land of fan translations, I played an interesting RPG called Persona 2: Innocent Sin. The experience was pretty good and I was very satisfied with the dedicated translation which allowed me to play one of my most wanted games that wasn't released in English...in English.

Well, now a similar situation has presented itself. As I was looking around some forums on an adventure game site, I came across a thread talking about the fan translation of Policenauts, a very old Playstation adventure game directed by Hideo Kojima (which was also released on several different formats before the PS version). Intrigued, I went ahead and looked some stuff up. Apparently, many people who played it in Japanese and understood it hail it as Hideo Kojima's "hidden masterpiece" as plans for the official localization by Konami were cancelled. The translators also seemed to have been working on it for a very long time so I felt very obliged to try the whole thing out and I honestly found that the game looked interesting as a whole so I went ahead and played the game which was translated thanks to the patch.

hgff

Now, I haven't played this long enough to give my definite opinion on what I think of the game (I've played around 5 hours) but it left a very good first impression on me.

I'll say it up front though. Policenauts is a cla$$ic adventure game. If you don't like adventure games, don't play this. The only action sequences that it has are these (very intense) shooting sequences that have so far happened rarely. Also, this game has a very heavy science fiction feel to it. If you hate science fiction, don't bother with this game as it throws a large amount of scientific terms at you.

For everyone else, I really suggest you give it a try. Like I said earlier, the game left some very good first impressions on me. It's a game that takes place around the year 2040 and follows the adventures of Jonathan Ingram, a man who was...er, it's kind of hard to explain. It's probably easier if you guys read up on it yourself.

Anyways, that's all I really have to talk about I just thought I'd give you guys an update since it's been quite a while since my last blog. So I guess that's it for now. I'll give you guys an update on how school goes when it starts this coming Tuesday.

Oh yeah, and like I predicted, The Greatest Adventure Game Hero of All Time is turning out to be one big glorified popularity contest. I mean, honestly. Frogger is beating Garrett? Little Mac won over Phoenix Wright? It's clear that this is more of a "Who do more people know about?" and "Who looks cooler?" contest instead of a Greatest Hero one. Well, I guess that's a given. Although this honestly isn't turning out to be anything more than those Character Battles they have over at GameFAQs (except with less candidates since they're only including heroes).

Policenauts? Hmm. Never heard of that.

Never heard of Policenauts, but this sounds very interesting, great blog as always.

I always wanted to play both of those games.

Yeah, I pretty much hate anything that a bunch of random people get to vote in.

Good luck with school.

Heard about; but never played; Policenauts.

Yeah, I kind of figured it'd turn out this way. But that's just how it goes in polls like that -- the most well known candidate always wins.

Heh, I have Policenauts *cough*, but I still haven't tried it out yet. I want to try out snatcher though, which is just like policenauts.

sounds like it could be a hidden gem. i feel bad i probably wont get around to playing this one.

I never heard of it, but it sounds interesting.

Thats some good info there, the game was completely hidden from my radar, mind if you let us know how the rest of the game shapes up?. as for the 'hero' contest its not looking good and its gotten worse after today, the deep and developed Garret, Ico, Nameless One & Manny Calvera are out, i just knew this contest was gonna turn out like this, it just shows that its the fanboys, not the enthusiasts like yourself and others on here that flood this place.

In Innocent Sin I've just defeated the principal...okay, maybe I didn't, but I watched I like it a lot. The Joker is a good villain so far, and that principal is who I would say they based Mr. Morooka off of in Persona 4. Although the principal in P2 is so much more evil xD

Ah, Policenauts. I've always wanted to play it, but then it stayed in Japan Glad to hear you're liking it. Let me know if the story is worth watching, or if it's just near average. Kojima's other work deserve more credit than just the Metal Gear series.

And that's exactly how the Hero Competition is going. Meh, I expected as much Good luck in school

I'm losing the contest already. I really wanted that $3000 giftcard.

@Landsowne5: Now you have

@mitu123: Thanks! Policenauts really is an interesting game, I'd definitely recommend that people give it a try.

@Legolas_Katarn: Considering how obscure both games are in every region except Japan, you could always use "alternate" methods to play the games

@Azure_Valkyrie: Thanks! Also, when I told my friends about Policenauts, they pretty much had the same reply It IS a Hideo Kojima game after all so they heard of it but it had no localization unfortunately

@c_rake: Yeah, that was pretty much proven in the GameFAQs Character Battles already where either Link or a Final Fantasy VII character wins

@Cantius: I "have" Policenauts as well *cough* I want to try Snatcher as well! I don't have much experience with Sega CD emulators though (and to get the official localization, I need to get myself a Sega CD and shell out $200 for the game on eBay )

@LordGamer0001: It is quite a hidden gem but at least it's hidden for a reason (no official localization, genre doesn't have much appeal anymore, etc.) so there's no need to feel bad that you won't be playing this one.

@IpodHero176: When I first heard of the game, I thought it sounded very interesting as well!

@illmatic87: I'll definitely keep you guys updated on how the game shapes up. I'm actually stuck at one part though but I'll do my best to get past it and get to playing more of the game. Also, I agree with you. This contest is getting worse and I've pretty much completely lost interest in it at this point

@ShadowVari: Ah, I remember the principal. He's really quite a jerk. If you don't like him in Innocent Sin then wait until you see him in Eternal Punishment. The stuff he does is even worse >_> and yeah, I did get a feeling that Mr. Morooka is based of Principal Hannya I'm glad that there's someone else who knows about Policenauts The story is definitely worth watching, there are definitely some very intense and great moments in the game and things are executed well for the most part.

@soulless4now: That's too bad A $3000 gift card would've been nice!

Yeah it seemed like just a retread of the stuff on Gamefaqs. I stopped paying attention to those because it was just a popularity contest, and not what I thought it should be from the title; Which of these two would win in a fight?
Posted Sep 5, 2009 11:09 am PT
You...kinda spoiled something for me. The principal is supposedly dead after that fight...well, somebody asks at the end of the boss fight, and if you say he's still alive, then the guy (who's doing the playthrough) said that there's a funny scene at the end. Oh well, I'm glad we get to see more of him

Okay, I'll put it on the list of what to watch. It probably won't be next though. That's Eternal Punishment of course

Can you seriously send me a PM about the Policenauts translation and P2:IS. It would be greatly appreciated.
Posted Sep 5, 2009 1:51 pm PT
I've never heard of this game, but it sounds interesting. I've never played Persona either -- what a shame.
Posted Sep 5, 2009 10:16 pm PT
I find it hilarious that Pikachu beat Nathan Drake Pikachu isn't really a "hero", he's more of a side kick, in my opinion. Good luck with school!

I remember there were some references about Policenauts in MGS1. That's the only place I heard of Policenauts. And I think the voting on All Time Greatest Hero is biased. Frogger beating Garrett is justified because I voted for him.
I think the biggest upset has been Master Chief biting the dust against Bub & Bob.

I've never heard of it, but it sounds pretty fun.
Posted Sep 8, 2009 5:11 pm PT
Yeah especially since I have over 100 games to get.
