Hello everyone! It's nice to see you all once again. How have you all been doing?

Nothing much has been happening with me. It's kind of sad that I'm spending my summer vacation at home most of the time but I still do stuff occasionally. I'm going camping this coming weekend with some family friends and my family and I are watching Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on Tuesday or Wednesday (I honestly don't know if I'm looking forward to it or not with how weird the editing of Order of the Phoenix was but I guess I'll still stay cautiously excited about it). As for now, I just got a few games and watched a few movies so it's time for another one of my usual irregularly posted update blogs

Astro Boy: Omega Factor

The story behind me getting Astro Boy: Omega Factor begins many weeks ago. While I was looking over my Gameboy Advance section, I said to myself "Wow, the DS has been out for FOUR years and the GBA system is pretty much almost dead. I can't believe that I only bought this many games for it" so I decided to work on my collection before all of the games for the handheld went into obscurity and would never be seen again. So I went lurking around Gamespot looking for some interesting games and found Astro Boy: Omega Factor. Seeing how it was going for a decent price on amazon.ca, I had it ordered.

I must say, it's a very solid action game. Now, I was not very familiar with the manga or anime that this game is centered around on but I was still able to enjoy it. It plays like some sort of arcade shooter/beat em' up hybrid where you fight bad guys to progress through the stage while collecting points and getting high scores at the same time. Not something I'm very accustomed to but a system I eventually warmed up to throughout the game.

I was also surprised that the story was able to capture my attention. The game moves at a blisteringly fast pace so there's never much focus given to it but the concepts are all pretty interesting with the whole robot and human racial tensions and such. It actually made me watch a few episodes of the 1980 anime online and it almost creeped me out a little. Also, am I the only one who was reminded of Pinocchio with the storyline of the whole thing? Except this one was kind of more exciting since people almost get killed and it involves a little robot boy who can shoot lasers out of his fingertips and fly. Anyway, I recommend this game. It's old but fun and I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition

This game was a bit of an impulse buy for me. I decided to expand my Adventure game collection so I decided to look around my brother's Steam account (who says downloadable games can't be part of my collection? ). Of course, the first thing I pretty much saw was The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition. I had heard a lot of the hype over this new special edition and I've read some impressions on the old game and why it's such a cla$$ic AND it was only $10 so I thought "Wow, this sounds like a great deal" and bought it.

I do not regret doing that one bit. I don't know how I'm so impressed over a Special Edition of a game made in 1990 but I guess that just showed that this game really knows how to stand the test of time. Well...I guess the humour and the writing anyway. I switched to cla$$ic mode a few times and the difference in quality between the new graphics and the cla$$ic one was too big that I just stayed with the modern version (the animation is very similar though). I might do a playthrough of cla$$ic mode one day though.

I can also see why this is considered one of the most accessible adventure games of all time. The hint system was a lifesaver for me a lot of times and the game doesn't carry any heavy philosophical themes. It's a lighthearted, fun, and very humorous story about pirates. Don't expect anything on the level of The Longest Journey here in terms of story. It's rarely ever as serious as some parts in that game. There's tons more humour and fun puzzle-solving in this one though and I highly recommend this. Now, just in case LucasArts ever stumbles upon this blog...

PLEASE make a Special Edition of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. By releasing The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, you have somehow made a new fan (almost 20 years later of the release of the original game no less...) who wants to play through all the Monkey Island games. If you do this then I will be eternally grateful.

Also, is anyone else getting pissed by the people who bash on this game? For some reason, this game seems to be attracting people used to RPGs and the like who are probably complaining about the lack of combat. I even read a guy's post comparing this game to Chrono Trigger of all things. Sheesh, they're two different genres people. If you like one, you might not like the other. No need to needlessly criticize one because of your tastes.

Movies

So, other than my Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince watching that will be done next week, I also watched one movie in the last few weeks which is...

qwet

Yep, I watched Drag Me To Hell (from watching Up to Drag Me To Hell, what a change )! One of my friends was ranting about this to me about how scary the trailer looked and everything so I looked the movie up and found out that Sam Raimi, the guy who made the Evil Dead movies is directing it! This made me more excited to watch it so my brother and my friend (not the one who said it was scary) decided to go ahead and give it a watch.

After seeing this movie, the best word that I could come up with to describe it is HILARIOUS. I don't know how my one friend thought the movie was going to be scary. I was laughing the whole time and was almost never scared. The general consensus between my brother and the friend who watched it with me was pretty much the same. This movie seriously works better as a comedy more than anything. If you can still find it airing in a theatre or if it comes out on DVD/Blu-Ray, I highly recommend giving it a watch just for the lulz and if you're scared about watching this, don't be. There's like one or two "Boo!" moments here but the rest is comedy gold.

Profile Redesign

As I was looking over my Gamespot profile the other day, I just realized something. I'm really getting tired of my usual design. My avatar is fairly new and I like it so I'm cool with that but I really want to change everything else.

KOS-MOS is cool and all but it's been forever since I've played Xenosaga and I want to try another theme. I also kind of want a new blog header and signature.

So, if there are any people out there who are experienced with programs like Photoshop and the like and you wouldn't mind helping me out, you can send me a private message or leave a comment about it. If you could, I'd greatly appreciate it!

----------

and that's all for now! Until my next blog post!

Word of caution: You might be disappointed with HP6 after watching and comparing it to the novel. I haven't played any of those game series. I haven't seen Drag Me To Hell either.

I've never played any of the Monkey Island games but it sounds like I'm missing out. I had no idea Drag Me To Hell was more funny than scary so I want to see it now Sam Raimi is also directing the upcoming World of Warcraft movie. I know game movies usually flop, but I'm interested to see how this one turns out.

Astro Boy is a great game. I played it all the way to the end, even both playthroughs!
Posted Jul 27, 2009 6:08 pm PT
All my friends said it looked dumb so I never got a chance to see it. I told them it was suppose to be that was cause Sam Raimi was directing it and he made the Evil Dead movies but no one wanted to see it with me I'm going to rent it when it comes out on DVD though.

@soulless4now: Trust me, I've forgotten so much of the books that I'll barely be able to compare them to the movies. I guess that will minimize my disappointment!

@gamer_girl15: If you're an Adventure game fan and you've never played any of the Monkey Island games then you're definitely missing out! Go see Drag Me To Hell, it's hilarious and also, a World of Warcraft movie! I'm interested in seeing how that turns out too. Although, I don't understand why in all the news articles, it has to be a WoW movie instead of a movie about Warcraft in general. The whole series has some pretty interesting lore that dates far back to the first Warcraft game. Well, it doesn't matter to me, I'm probably still going to check it out in the end I wonder if it'll focus on the heroes like Jaina, Tyrande, Thrall and the like or if it's going to be more of a "one person in a huge world" feel like the actual WoW game.

@Aberinkulas: It is a great game! I tried playing Normal but kept getting killed by that one big robot guy (Pluto was it?) so I switched to Easy and finished that playthrough. Since I figured out where all the characters were, I upgraded Astro Boy a lot in the second playthrough (which was on Normal) and beat him easily! I'm not even going to try Hard

@Minishdriveby: Aww It's supposed to be dumb! You receive my permission to kidnap your friends, tie them up in a chamber, and force them to watch Drag Me To Hell when it comes out on DVD

I'm getting into GBA games now too. Going to trade in some Wii games to buy them. I want Secret of Monkey Island too, looks good.
Posted Jul 27, 2009 7:41 pm PT
Everybody's seen HP6 but me, so I have nobody to go with. *sad*

Anywho... I love that you're playing old games. Nobody plays GBA games anymore! That looks like a kyoot game too!

Enjoy your old-new games and HP!

Most of my summer vacations are at home with some trips and stuff, but not much beyond sitting at home doing practically nothing...
Posted Jul 27, 2009 9:33 pm PT
if you thought the editing in harry potter 5 was weird then just wait for number 6
Posted Jul 27, 2009 11:38 pm PT
Ya HP6 was ridiculously disappointing in comparison to the book...
Posted Jul 27, 2009 11:43 pm PT
I heard a lot of people praise the Special Edition of Monkey Island, so I'm thinking about getting it myself as I enjoyed Monkey Island 3 and 4 very very much. Are people really comparing it with RPGs?? Seriously, why complain about the lack of fights? Fights are non-existant in Monkey Island as far as I remember I like RPGs as well, but would never ever compare it to them...

Drag Me To Hell, eh? lol at your impressions about that movie
Posted Jul 28, 2009 4:11 am PT
Astro Boy Omega Factor was good! I bought that on day of release
Posted Jul 28, 2009 5:03 am PT
Haha yeh, I've already mentioned I quite enjoyed Astro Boy. I like that you have to visit past stages to change events too. Anyway, I would like to play Monkey Island, but I don't have the time for a point-and-click right now. ))):

Profile redesign eh? I can help if you don't mind waiting till like, the 12th next month. >.>

Metro City? For a moment, I thought this blog was going to be about Final Fight or something...

I could never get into Astro Boy. Probably because he had a machine gun that came out of his butt in the original series.

I liked Half-Blood Prince, but to be honest, none of the movie can fully capture the magic of the books. I've never seen Drag Me To Hell, but it looks hilarious.

Unfortunately, I can't help you with the profile makeover. Photoshop isn't my forte.

@swrdof1000trths: I see! It's better to start collecting things like GBA games sooner than later after all since they will undoubtedly become rare in the future.

@Yuna7780: Old games are cool! Astro Boy does look like a pretty cute character. The manga and anime were directed towards children after all.

@Half-Ghost: I have many summer days like that too

@pigfish2: Yikes...

@nb49: I guess it's good I forgot most of it then

@mattsn22: If you enjoyed Monkey Island 3 and 4 then I'd definitely recommend the The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition! I didn't even play any of the Monkey Island games and I still enjoyed it! And yeah, I'm disappointed with all these so-called "gamers" who can't even dish out pointless criticism without looking under the game's page on any major gaming site and see that the genre says "ADVENTURE". Also, there is combat in Monkey Island and it's totally awesome. Fighting using insults was tons of fun. mattsn22...you fight like a cow!!!

@jaykho213: After watching the movie, I was LOLing myself at how unexpected my feelings about it were

@Extra_Life: I thought the game was good too! I'm 5 years late but it still manages to hold up well!

@mufujifi: The way that the Stage Select feature was actually part of the story was pretty interesting to me too. It was definitely a neat way of doing things differently. Also, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition is 5 hours AND there's a hint system which always points you in the right direction after using it enough so if you're wary that the game might take too much time, there's any need to worry.

Also, I'd be willing to wait until the 12th of next month! Is that during your trimester break?

@zxv33: Monkey Island is indeed a funny game. It has a very good sense of humour. Also, I think that the bad feedback coming from Drag Me To Hell is that people were expecting a horror title or something. That movie is the farthest that a horror movie can get from horror but it's one of the funnier movies I've seen

@DesertClawX2X: Sorry to disappoint you Wait...MAYBE FINAL FIGHT AND ASTRO BOY TAKE PLACE IN THE SAME CITY! That's highly unlikely but it's just a wild guess

That was one thing I noticed when I started watching a few episodes of the 1980 anime online. I could've sworn in the opening that she just made a robot explode by shooting at it from his butt. When it's put like that, shooting stuff from your butt actually seems pretty awesome...

None of my friends want to see Drag Me To Hell. Not even my husband. They're fraidy cats.
Posted Jul 28, 2009 10:55 pm PT
I've heard a lot of bad things about the new HP movie. I might see it tomorrow (or today ... its 12:30am), but I heard on the radio there were something like 70+ "mistakes" in it (words being spoken without the mouths moving, hair being in different styles in between cuts, etc)
Posted Jul 29, 2009 7:38 am PT
I didn't want to see DMTH, because I knew it wouldn't be a good movie. I liked HP6, but they overlook many of the major plotlines that turn up in HP7.
Posted Jul 29, 2009 10:58 am PT
Heheh, nice with those games. I've never played either but I've heard good things. And I hope you enjoy HP6, I did a lot!
Posted Jul 29, 2009 3:11 pm PT
There hasnt been any decent american horror movie lately. They're all about ghost that have more control over the material world than than the living, or about psychopaths that look like nice people.
Posted Jul 29, 2009 5:00 pm PT
Yup, 12th would be my trimester break. Well actually the 7th, but I'll be away and I might need to wrap-up my last deadline if I haven't done so before.
Posted Jul 29, 2009 7:54 pm PT
Astro Boy: OF is awesome indeed. Unfortunately I do not have it on the GBA, and ROM-ing it with a keyboard is a pain, as are many fast-paced action games. Oh well, glad you're enjoying it, Treasure never disappoints even when dealing with licensed games.
