Hello everyone! Nice to see you again.

Anyway, here is Part 2 of my Top 10 Most Memorable Games list. If you just got here and you're not sure what I'm talking about, go see my previous blog.

Anyways, here we will be seeing some of my most favourite games that left such a memorable impression on me. There's bound to be disagreements but once again, go consult my collection to see if I missed a game that you thought deserved to be here before arguing. On to the list!

5. Metroid Prime "The Atmosphere"

dfg

This has probably got to be one of the most amazingly designed games I've ever played. Not only did Retro Studios bring the fantastic Metroid series to the 3D world but they did it with so much $tyle. It even serves as a hybrid game being a mix of first-person shooter and an adventure. The first section of the game in the space pirate frigate was very intense and was already quite memorable on its own. The moment that really won it for me however was when Samus landed on Tallon IV which first appeared as a very lush place filled with greenery, natural-looking platforms, and some of the best graphics I had seen at that point. Then they put you behind Samus' visor, give you control, and it easily becomes one of the most immersive experiences I've had. The first thing I did when I got control over Samus was jump into the small body of water in the beginning area and and come out. It was really cool seeing how the water would actually slide off your visor instead of magically disappearing. It's small added touches like these that really make the Metroid Prime trilogy one of the best-looking video games in recent memory and definitely the most atmospheric and memorable.

4. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES "The Characters"

dfdfg

I always have thought that of all the things that the Persona spin-off titles had which put them above the rest, it was the characterization. Instead of having protagonists that are overpowered and badass (like the stars of DMC and God of War and even other RPGs like Valkyrie Profile), it instead favours flawed but human characters. This definitely works to its advantage to making the characters very memorable. The experiences they go through and the problems they have (well...except for being able to summon crazy other selves and having to climb through a treacherous tower filled with demons) are pretty realistic and there's bound to be someone in the game that once can sympathize with. There has definitely been effort put into the character development in this game.

3. Final Fantasy VI Advance "The Change and the Story"

dghg

Having started the Final Fantasy series at Final Fantasy VII, I was one of the people who missed out on this game (called Final Fantasy III back in the day in North America) the first time around and all the Final Fantasies prior to it. Thus, I followed the releases of the Final Fantasy games closely on the Gameboy Advance. I honestly thought they were all pretty good from I to V and each had some interesting qualities. Then I came to this game and all I could say once everything was over was "Wow". It was so much darker compared to the previous games (it still had some silly antics of course). The cast had a lot of backstory to them, and the first lead character Terra is one of the most memorable and interesting. It was done in a different ****and it was done well. The plot had lots of effort put into it and it's amazing that a port of such an old game could evoke such emotions. Definitely the pinnacle of Square Enix's work.

2. The Longest Journey "The Execution and The Characters"

lklijh

Let me say one thing that I'm sure of: I'm not an avid adventure gamer. I do buy some and I enjoy them but it has never been a huge part of my collection. I enjoyed some of them like the visual-novel $tyle Ace Attorney series and the exploration-based Endless Ocean and I definitely played some cla$$ic adventure games back then on my parent's PC but I never really got into the genre too much despite it being the genre that succeeds the best in making a great narrative and great dialogue. Then came this game which made me go crazy over the genre and made it rise from one of my most overlooked sector of games to my most favoured. This is the one game that had characters filled with personality that I actually cared for and the dialogue is wonderful. I also cannot overlook the amazing voice acting that this game has which makes April Ryan and everyone her seem even more real. The game has a typical "two worlds" setting that combines fantasy and a modern feel but it is done with such great execution that it surpassed all the rest in actually making it believable. The Longest Journey definitely counts as one of the most memorable games I've played that sparked my great interest in the adventure genre.

1. Persona 2: Innocent Sin "The Characters...Again and pretty much everything else too"

dfgh

Yet another Persona game featured in my list and for the exact same reason I DID say that the characterization is one of the strong points of the series though. However, before I even move on to that, I should point out that there are so many other reasons why this game is memorable too. Instead of going for a steampunk, fantasy, or futuristic setting it instead focuses right on the modern world (in this game's case, 1999 since that's when it was released). That on its own is quite unique already. To add even more to the memorability of the game, it even features one of the darkest and most tragic stories I've ever experienced (especially if you don't have a walkthrough handy and make the wrong decisions). This game even has a choice and consequence feature that many other JRPGs don't have (they instead have pointless dialogue choices that have little to no impact on the story). Make the wrong choice? One of your main characters might miss out on their advanced personas or their final fate might be worse than it could have been. Nice touches like these are why I love the game.

Finally, this game is the most memorable because of the characters. In Persona 3 FES, you could sympathize with the characters and feel sorry for the believable situations they could go through. It was more of a pity relationship that I had with the characters there because of all the family, life, and education issues they had to go through. However, the characters in this game are much more human. While in Persona 3 I could sympathize for the characters, in this game I WAS some of the characters. I was Lisa when her parents brought her to a completely new country where she was teased and suffered, I have friends that very well resembled Maya in her positive big sister personality, and my personality is just like Yukino's. Prior to this game I had never seen a cast of more believable characters and the way that the villain tortures them and the way they face it really made them some of my heroes. This is definitely one of (if not the) most memorable games I've played.

----------

Well, that's all for now. I hope you guys enjoyed my list! Remember, it's just my opinion so don't go holding any grudges on me just because I didn't list so-and-so game at #1. Feel free to discuss it!

EDIT: Oh yeah, super ultra special shout-out to xriceballx and gamer_girl15 who commented on my last blog. I haven't seen you guys for a long time! Also, a shout-out to NekotheSpook who commented on my blog before my last blog! I really missed you guys!

I HIGHLY APPROVE OF YOUR PERSONA CHOICES!
Posted Jul 17, 2009 7:53 pm PT
I've never played a Persona game but they seem really interesting. I think I'd probably like them. Does it matter if you start at 3 or 4? Do the stories have anything to do with eachother? And can you get them for cheap?

I loved Metroid Prime. It's one of my favorite games. I agree they nailed the atmosphere. It's brilliant. I really like Metroid Prime 3 also, but Echoes was kind of meh.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 8:10 pm PT
I see.. You're one of THOSE gamers...
Posted Jul 17, 2009 8:13 pm PT
You didn't even let me post on your previous blog yet! Crap!

Metroid Prime is one that I wholeheartedly agree with - the atmosphere had the "it's just you against the world (or what's left of it)" mentality. I especially liked the part when you finally met the metroids in all of their life-sucking, 128-bit glory.

That's my main reason for picking up Metroid Prime: Trilogy next month.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 8:18 pm PT
finally the FF stigma is wearing away, nice to see some other games out there... ive wanted to try innocent sin for a while...where you find it?
Posted Jul 17, 2009 8:24 pm PT
It's interesting how Metroid series managed not only to survive its 3D conversion but also to improve itself. I regret not playing most of the games you listed here since I quit playing games by the time of Nintendo 64 release and only came back to it by the time DS was released...

Well written post. I could almost feel 'the water sliding off my visor instead of magically disappearing'!

@Yuna7780: Great! The series is pretty nice in my opinion.

@swrdof1000trths: It doesn't matter if you start with 3 or 4. Do take note though that the first one you play will probably be the one you like more because of how similar the games are. Echoes was way too difficult for me, I had to use a guide to get those Sky Temple Keys at the end.

@AKayy_47:...wut?

@jwallace: I'd be getting myself Metroid Prime Trilogy too, if it weren't for the fact that I have already have two of the Metroid Prime games and I just need Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. Well, I might get it instead if the motion controls really enhance the gaming experience of the first two games a lot.

@nestorafranco: I uh... got a Playstation emulator and downloaded the game together with its fan translation. Hopefully none of the moderators that chance upon this blog are too strict

@julianozuca: You certainly missed a good chunk of the last generation of gaming then. Well, there's no shame in that, we all have to take a break in gaming after all Now that you've seen my list, you have some suggestions on what you should get that you missed!
Posted Jul 17, 2009 8:51 pm PT
Good choices. I especially agree with the part about Metroid Prime.

@swrdof1000trths - The Persona games, despite being a numbered series, are independent of one another, in other words, you can start P4 without having to finish P3 and still get just as much enjoyment.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 8:56 pm PT
Yes! The Persona series ^_^
Posted Jul 17, 2009 8:58 pm PT
@Platyphyllum: ah ok... dont worry my lips are sealled xD
Posted Jul 17, 2009 9:13 pm PT
Yay for The Longest Journey!
Posted Jul 17, 2009 9:21 pm PT
Really interesting list there. I could have guessed a bunch of them because you were kind of caught up with them previously -- like Persona 2 and 3, and The Longest Journey. Still, great list.

I'm still in the middle of FFVI and been picking at it slowly. I'm more interested in playing SRT on my DS though, but it's handy to have them both in the slots. Got to start Persona 3 soon someday, and got to finish up The Longest Journey as well. Hmmm.

Posted Jul 17, 2009 10:13 pm PT
I love FES and Final Fantasy 6. Final Fantasy 6 is one of my top five favorite games. I haven't played The Longest Journey or Innocent Sin but Eternal Punishment is also on my top five list. I own the first Metroid Prime game but I bought it less than two years ago and it made me sick when I tried to play it, like most older FPS games do.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 10:28 pm PT
Eh. One of the 'Nintendo RPG Anime' gamers. Ughh....
Posted Jul 17, 2009 10:30 pm PT
Surprised to see Longest Journey here, you don't seem like an adventure gamer and I didn't expect you to have of played it. I myself only played a small chunk of it and I did enjoy it, but I'm not really a fan of those types of adventure games. I enjoy adventure games that have some pixel hunting and are more puzzle-y and have less focus on narrative, stuff like Samorost I guess. Anyways, interesting choices, you seem to be inclined to either highly polished products or games with an emphasis on character and plot. I'm more of a gamer that will think of a game as memorable from its gameplay or a unique mechanic in it. Also about the immersion in Prime, the water's just one thing of many. The 'eye-in-the-visor reflection', the slow vision panning, the tengible weightiness of the jumps, and how Samus would bring up her left hand here and there depending on what's going on... yeah, I was impressed by Prime as well.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 10:56 pm PT
A lot of cool games there, though the only I've played is Metroid Prime.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 11:22 pm PT
@vgm007: I'm glad you agree!

@jaykho213: Persona!

@nestorafranco: Good. I was thinking I'd have to silence you there for a minute...

@barkera0: The Longest Journey!

@mufujifi: Ah, well, with all the game updates I make, I guess that this list would be quite predictable.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 11:25 pm PT
@Legolas_Katarn: P3FES and Final Fantasy VI were great. I did play a bit of Eternal Punishment but the one I got was all buggy and everything so I never got to finish it It was shaping up to be a very nice game though. Also, I could understand why Metroid Prime wouldn't appeal to some people. It did make me feel a bit claustrophobic always viewing everything from first-person but I got kind of used to it.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 11:26 pm PT
@AKayy_47: Excuse me? I find it more "Uggh..."-worthy that you'd even come here to this blog to make such an unnecessarily rude comment. Do you not have anything better to do? Also, take note that the biggest chunk of my collection consists of PS2 games so I'm barely a Nintendo person (I don't even have Super Mario Galaxy yet and never played Ocarina of Time). I mostly play RPGs. So what? I play adventure, rhythm, fighting games, and action games too. Also, how in the world do you take me as an anime person? Not only are some of my favourite movies from the West but I only watch anime when its highly recommended or it sounds interesting. The last anime I watched was actually a series called Cowboy Bebop, a series made in 1998 which was randomly recommended to me. Shows how often I watch anime, doesn't it? Your attempt at stereotyping me into a particular group is a failure.

@grafkhun: Ah, I see! If you're more into the pixel hunting puzzle-like stuff then I'd recommend Zack & Wiki. It seemed like that sort of game and I remember it being quite interesting. You are right when saying I consider games that have well-done plots or narratives as the most memorable but I can also understand where you're coming from. I do my best to give credit to games that bring innovation and solid mechanics to the gameplay as well. I can totally relate to what you're saying about Metroid Prime. It definitely made you feel like the bounty hunter behind the suit.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 11:26 pm PT
Yay, Final Fantasy VI!!! That's really memorable for me too.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 11:36 pm PT
Haha it was still a great read though, as expected from you.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 11:36 pm PT
sadly I haven't played any of those
Posted Jul 18, 2009 12:17 am PT
I like all of your choices except Metroid Prime. I think that MP is the worst game ever made.

However, some of your choices made me think along different lines than I usually do. For instance, is there something memorable about a game that is otherwise mediocre, or, worse, plain bad in most other areas? If I had to make a list, I'm not sure I could be as objective as you, good job.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 12:30 am PT
i can relate to this list i always wanted to try the ace attorney games cause i know you love them very much. im bringing this up because of "longest journey". no i havent played it yet, but you've given me the opportunity try it! coolio for the mention =]]]] *hugs*
Posted Jul 18, 2009 12:40 am PT
I probably would have liked it, back when I would have been able to play it.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 1:21 am PT
Awesome, really nice choices. I've never played a Persona game, but they sound interesting. I agree with you about Metroid Prime being so atmospheric -- it's wonderful.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 1:40 am PT
I love the little explanations you put beside each title. Neat! I agree with Persona 3:Fes, it being the only game i have played of your list. I hope P2 gets a remake.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 3:09 am PT
I don't know what to say, those just.. fit their places so well! Other than The Longest Journey, that is. I've never played it..
Posted Jul 18, 2009 3:40 am PT
Personaaaa!
-cough-
I played most of those, but Metroid. D=
Posted Jul 18, 2009 4:19 am PT
I was waiting for Shin Megami games to make your list. You really like games for characters, huh? I tend to as well. Well again, haven't played any of those games. But, nice list. Very unique as I said in your last post. I really do need to try some Shin Megami games. Everyone seems to like them.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 5:07 am PT
Oh persona 2...there will be never such a game again *honouring* ATLUS became just commercial like the rest.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 6:49 am PT
I've never played a Persona game, I haven't heard of The Longest Journey, and I've yet to get around to Final Fantasy VI. BUT you are dead-on with Metroid Prime. Just exploring that game world was a really amazing experience.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 8:19 am PT
The only persona game I have experience with is persona 3 FES, but the original 2 are on my must buy list.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 8:41 am PT
I SECOND YUNA7780'S STATEMENT!
Posted Jul 18, 2009 8:56 am PT
Are you a female?
Posted Jul 18, 2009 10:19 am PT
Let me tell you after reading this blog I am a fan of yours.
Because both of us agree on two things you stated here.
1) FFVI is awesome. Terra is an amazingly well-built character (she's also my favorite character overall in the series)
2) The Longest Journey is an unforgettable gaming experience indeed. I remember I was only 9 when I first played it and I didn't like the dialogue-heavy game and it was only recently when I started playing it again did I realise what gem I was missing. April Ryan is definitely one of the most well-developed female characters in gaming.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 11:04 am PT
You know what? For FFVI I think I would have chosen it for the Overworld Theme, which is actually one of my favourite gaming pieces of music ever. It comes just behind the the soundtracks of Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma.

Still, you make some great arguments as to why each game is great in terms of memorability These days I feel that if I miss the cast of characters from a game come the credits, the game is definitely a great one. Right now, I'm missing Yuri, Haken and Faize. One cookie for the name of each game
Posted Jul 18, 2009 2:22 pm PT
... Yeah ... I'm going to assume the only reason Xenogears didn't make your list is because you never played it ...
Posted Jul 18, 2009 2:59 pm PT
I loved Metroid Prime! The boss fights and the environments were amazing when I first played it. I even went back and tried to get every scan for Samus' log book after I beat it. I still remember the music from Magmoor Caverns (I think that's what it called ).

Oh and I just remembered how many tries it took me to beat Omega Pirate
Posted Jul 18, 2009 3:48 pm PT
I am definitely gonna start Innocent Sin after I finish Grandia. I just like the font for some reason...
Posted Jul 18, 2009 5:59 pm PT
@Half-Ghost: Definitely one of the best in the whole series in my opinion!

@mufujifi: :O That is the most touching thing you have ever said to me! I am almost at the verge of tears of joy. Just kidding Thanks though! It's nice to know that it was a good read.

@pigfish2: Well, now you know that if you ever see them around, you should give them a try

@Mamba219: Well, I can see how it wouldn't appeal to some people but I think it's far from one of the worst games ever created. Well, different people, different opinions! It's nice knowing that you thought I did a good job with this, although I thought that most people would think my list is more subjective and opinionated than objective.

@xriceballx: I'd definitely recommend the Ace Attorney series to you! Also, of course I'd mention you, it's always nice to have friends who disappeared coming back *hugs back*

@Darkmagcite: Metroid Prime is definitely one of the most atmospheric games I've played. It really made use of the Gamecube's technical capabilities.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 7:29 pm PT
@Lightfellower: You have no idea how happy a Persona 2 remake would make me As long as they keep the mood and feel intact.

@HavQ-san: Well, that's reasonable considering how you never played it I'm glad you for the most part agree on how they were placed!

@Shiizuki: Metatron! Scathach! Thor! *coughs* If you're into the exploration type of adventure game then I'd recommend Metroid Prime.

@Whitewolf725: Well, I do often find games more memorable if they can create experiences and characters that I can relate to. It doesn't mean that it surpasses every other game but just one of the more memorable ones. I'd recommend Shin Megami Tensei games, although some people don't particularly like the series. Just give it a try first!

@Shinobi-Neo: I do agree that it's unlikely that there will be another game like Persona 2: Innocent Sin. When I played it, I actually liked it considerably more than the later entries in the series (not that I'm saying P3 and P4 are bad or anything ) and was definitely unique.

@bluej33: That was one of my favourite parts of the game. Just looking around at the scenery when finding a new area and observing the environment and architecture was really fun. I'm hoping Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (the only entry in the series I don't have) does it even better.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 7:40 pm PT
@N8A: It's nice that they're on your must-buy list! Although I do have to be honest, it's going to be very difficult trying to find Persona 2 unless it gets remade. If you really want to try it out, you might want to do it the same way I did

@thismarlasinger: I'm glad you approve as well

@AKayy_47: Are you a child?

@lightwarrior179: I have a fan! :O I certainly do agree with you. For me, its a tie between Celes and Terra for favourite character in the entire series. Terra is amazingly well developed but the solitary island scene for Celes was just...wow. Well, no problem in having two favourite characters April Ryan was an amazing character, it's weird how the game had me caring for a character with such low graphical resolution. Just comes to show that classics still have that extra "something" to them!

@Extra_Life: The Overworld Theme sounded very nice. It sounded sad but also adventurous in a way! Hmm, there was a Yuri in Tales of Vesperia I believe. If not that then the Shadow Hearts series. As for the other two...I have no clue
Posted Jul 18, 2009 7:55 pm PT
@tu2pac: No need to assume anything, just take a look at my collection the Games Lists section of my profile If Xenogears isn't there then I don't own it or never fully played it.

@gamer_girl15: Oh yes, I remember Omega Pirate. That huge little...bleh, I can't say anymore All I can say is that he really was annoying. I never got to scan everything into Samus' logbook so you definitely earn my respect for having done so! I did get to scan enough at least to get the helmet-revealing scene (which was really cool on its own, I haven't seen Samus rendered that realistically before playing the game).

@Cantius: The font was pretty good too. Not hard to read at all.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 7:59 pm PT
I knew it.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 9:21 pm PT
Final Fantasy VI is my favorite game of all time!!!
Posted Jul 18, 2009 10:58 pm PT
One cookie then, the other two were from Super Robot Taisen OG: Endless Frontier, and Star Ocean IV.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 11:38 pm PT
@AKayy_47: Yep, it was obvious from the start. Definitely a child. @nb49: Final Fantasy VI is great! Definitely the most progressive entry in the series.

@Extra_Life: Ah, well, I don't own SRT: OG: Endless Saga myself so I wouldn't know and I haven't heard many people talk about Star Ocean 4. At least I still get a cookie
Posted Jul 19, 2009 5:03 am PT
Well, it's clearly subjective, but you let games that you think are bad take places on the list because of just one positive aspect. That's more objective than I could be, anyway.

For me, the greatest mystery in the universe is why anybody could ever like Metroid Prime...
