The downloadable game systems that are now available on all current generation platforms give indie developers a golden chance to show the value of their small, but very talented team of developers. Going through the tough process of creating and publishing expensive retail titles that would directly compete against the industry's big sellers is nearly impossible for such tiny studios. Fortunately digital distribution allowed gems that wouldn't make it past initial art drawings and brainstorming sections to see the light of the day.

As far as WiiWare titles go the three-part epic adventure of LostWinds stands on a category of its own. After playing through the first title – one of the system's launch games – I was absolutely amazed to see what Frontier was able to do with so many limitations. Despite the game's short length – about four hours – it presented outstanding visuals, both artistically and technically, while featuring one of the cleverest uses for the Wii's pointer, vastly enhancing the title's gameplay.

After completing the first third of the adventure I thought that despite its overwhelming qualities the title did belong to a downloadable service, simply because it lacked the big ambitious scope of what one expects from a full-fledged retail title. That is far from being a negative aspect though, but nevertheless I felt that the original game had some unexplored potential in it.

Last week when I purchased Winter of the Melodias, the second part of the adventure, I was simply expecting a follow-up game that wouldn't improve much on what its predecessor achieved. After all, I naively thought, Frontier was probably satisfied with the positive buzz generated by the original. Needless to say I was as wrong as I could possibly be.

Winter of the Melodias highly improves on everything the first game did. On its still short four hours of gameplay it is easy to feel the sequel to LostWinds is a game constantly trying to prove that it could easily be a massive quality retail game due to the many gameplay ideas thrown into the adventure. Winter of the Melodias is as immersive as some Metroid worlds, as puzzling as the most inventive Zelda dungeons and visually superior to a huge part of the Wii's retail lineup.

It is still early to say whether or not series initially planned as downloadable-only could expand into full-fledged bigger, better games in the future as there is no such a thing as a track record for downloadable home console games. However, after playing Winter of the Melodias I was able to see that while money may be lacking to most of these producers there is no shortage of potential in their work.

My review for the game will be up in a week or two.

I loved the first game, haven't picked up Winter of the Melodias yet but I really want it. It's good to know it's improved over the already great first game. Looking forward to your review.

I never got into this game but it is oddly satisfying for me to hear that even with highly postivie reviews the developers put more effort into their sequel to make the game even better man I wish more developers did that

I agree with you, it's great that some stuff actually gets a chance on the market through downloads.

That's cool. I played the first game, but honestly, I just could not get into it... I'll try playing it again sometime. I don't think I gave it much of a chance the first time around.

I believe they could break into the console market,but downloadable games have to be exceptional to really get publisher's attention,and the old ol' "money dear boy" comes into play often.

I've never heard of Lost Winds. Maybe that's why it's called "Lost" Winds.

I could see all 3 parts being released on a disc eventually for those without an internet connection and if that were to sell then who knows

@Ifnot: I found it to be much better than the original. I was absolutely not expecting it to be that good.

@payne6705: I know. It is fantastic to see such big improvements on a sequel.

@katamari: Considering how short the game is I don't think it will take you long to finish that.

@Sir_Demii: Just thinking about the big number of intelligent ideas that didn't make it into retail due to lack of financial support makes me sad.

@BlinDShoT95: Yes, that is some amazing art.

@PlasmaBeam44: Considering how short some current gen games are I think spending 10 bucks on a four hour game is a nice deal.

@tennis12master: I never say this about sequels, but I think Winter of the Melodias may change the minds of a few people who didn't enjoy the original.

@Giratina667: Sadly that is true.

@red0584: I don't think it is so "Lost" considering the sequel just made it to the top of the best selling Wii Ware games of the week! Yay!

@Foolz3h: There are some great ones in the system. World of Goo, Megaman 9 and LostWinds are must-buy. Swords and Soldiers, Bomberman Blast and Dr. Mario Rx are also fantastic.

@wildcat2000: I think it is worth a try if you have twenty dollars to spare to get both the original and the second one.

@pigfish2: That would be pretty awesome!

@mitu123: I absolutely agree.

@Stonetowerghost: I think it is worth to give it another chance.

@just_nonplussed: I think it does. The game is played a big fully connected maze-like overworld and it is quite atmospheric.

@Hizang: Have fun! You should really play it!

I won't be playing it, but big congrats to Frontier. It's always good to see an aspiring development studio make great indie games.
