I have finally gone through the five first movies on the list (as it was then). It took some time mostly because of me being away for easter, but also the fact that we wanted to see films chronologically, so we had to see all the LotR movies, which my BF doesn't especially enjoy..

But, here's the list, with grades, this far:

1. The Godfather 8.5

2. The Shawshank Redemption 7.0

3. The Godfather Part II 8.0

4. Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly 4.0

5. Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King 9.0

Also:

14. Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Rings 8.0

23. Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers 7.0

I didn't get very far in writing reviews for every movie, mostly because I had big problems finding out what to write about the Shawshank redemption. Most of the problems I had with the movie were very subjective, and don't work well in a review. I have somewhat the same problem with the good, the bad and the ugly. I hate the western genre, and have therefore a very subjective view of the movie, even though I have big problems seeing the stated quality..

I did write a review for "The Godfather" though.

Now, next five movies are:

6. Casablanca

7. Pulp Fiction (which has climbed up to 5. on the IMDB list as I write this)

8. Shindler's List

9. Star Wars - Episode five - The Empire strikes Back (Have to see four first though)

10. Seven Samurai

I checked out AFI's top 100 (http://www.afi.com/tvevents/100years/movies.aspx), and besides the fact that it all American, I would like to see a more international selection, I don't really agree with it. I've commented on most of the ones I've seen, and some of the other ones, but mostly I don't see the big difference between the two lists..

25. E.T (I think this one is overrated, seen it at least twice)

36. Midnight Cowboy

41. West Side Story (I love this, but I don't think it deserve top 100)

44. The Birth of a nation

49. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Seen this too, and don't think it's the best disney, I love Pinoccio and Dumbo)

52. From here to Eternity

55. The Sound of Music (Maybe if I didn't know that the real Von Trapp's hated it)

56. M*A*S*H (you got to be kidding)

58. Fantasia (This one I actually agree with, but can fully understand why it hasn't made top 250 user favourites)

59. Rebel Without a Cause

62. Tootsie

63. Stagecoach

64. Close Encounters of the Third Kind

66. Network

68. An American in Paris (seen)

69. Shane

70. The French Connection

73. Wuthering Heights

75. Dances with Wolves

77. American Graffiti

78. Rocky (I just can't believe that this is such a good movie, he can't act!)

82. Giant

86. Mutiny on the Bounty (I know this one was extremely popular in America, but I don't know about internationally)

88. Easy Rider

90. The Jazz Singer (need to see this one)

91. My Fair Lady (this one deserves top 100)

92. A Place in the Sun

99. Guess who's Coming for Dinner

100. Yankee Doodle Dandy

Seems like most of them are Western movies, or feature extremely American plots. I also think that the jazz singer and Snow white are on the list because of the technical achievements, and not really because of how good they are.. But I guess I can see all these too..

So, my BF and I have decided to see every top 250 movie on IMDBs top overall voted by users list.

http://www.imdb.com/chart/top

It will probably be pretty hard for me, since I react really badly to sadistic violence/torture, and really degrading actions. I know I have a lot of problems with Reservoir Dogs and A requiem for a Dream, to mention some..

I'm going to try to write a review for every movie, and we'll probably try to watch one each day.. (I could've done Filmspot's top list too, but first of all that's not user favourites, and second it's still a bit buggy and unfinished)

I'm not sure yet if we'll watch them completely after their ranking, but we'll probably at least see the top ten after order..

Top ten:

1. The Godfather

2. The Shawnshank Redemtion

3. The Godfather, Part II

4. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

5. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (First one I've seen)

6. Casablanca

7. Pulp Fiction (I'm really not looking forward to seeing this again.. )

8. Shindler's List (Saw this one in the evening together with almost 20 ppl, and one who laughed every time someone got shot.. That was horrible..)

9. Star Wars Ep. V: The Empire Strikes Back

10. Seven Samurai

So, the Godfather is first, we'll probably see it today or tomorrow, all after what we feel like. I'll try to update on how it goes, and about the reviews..

The Godfather
Quality-wise this movie is one of the greatest I’ve ever seen. The costumes, the setting and the actors all delivered a full-filling experience, and it was almost like you’d been transported to the early fifties. But what really...
