For me, 2009 is all about Uncharted 2 and Modern Warfare 2. But I find myself even more excited about the excellent games coming out next year, such as sequels to established franchises and a little something new from a few promising titles, for two of my favorite platforms - the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

360 - SC: Conviction, Mass Effect 2, Ghost Recon 4, Alan Wake, Halo Reach

PS3 - God Of War 3, Dante's Inferno, The Last Guardian, Heavy Rain, GT 5

Dantes Inferno

These are my top picks for next year. What are yours?

Uncharted 2 sorry it's going to be a must have but I don't paticulary like Halo like few others so if you love Halo like many others than go with that. But in my preference, Uncharted 2 wins it.

Good to hear it, frankly I believe the Halo formula is beginning to show its age a bit. I can't help but feel that we will basically be playing the same game that was released in 2004 (CE). I am yet to play the first Uncharted, however, but I don't see how the game could be any less "fun."

Although many sequels typically end up being "just not as good as the first," Uncharted 2's improved campaign (with online co-op?) and additional multiplayer sound promising, so I can understand where you are coming from. Still, I would probably have to go with MW2 for my day one purchase this year, even though it will most likely be more of the same COD we've been seeing since 4.

Infamous, MW2, Bioschock 2, AC2, KoF12, GT5. That said... I can't imagine giving up either Uncharted 2 OR MW2. That said, I won't pick those up on day one... no game gets a day one from me unless it was pre-reviewed a LOT. Too many good games need a patch or two (GoW2 for example) to make supporting the Day One rush worth it.

BioShock 2 is IT. That's all there is.

I'm with you on Uncharted 2, Assassins Creed 2 and Splinter Cell conviction. I'm also waiting on Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising.

Modern Warfare 2 and BioShock 2 from the list, Wolfenstein not on the list, and maybe L4D2.

@nappan: I agree with your opinion completely as I've learned my lesson from games such as Dark Sector and Rainbow Six Vegas 2. In regards to my question though, if you could pick up only one game this year, would it be MW2 or Uncharted 2?

@Battlesword: I'm looking forward to BioShock 2 just as much as the next person, but I don't think it will be a day one purchase for me. Even though the multiplayer sounds intriguing, it's not what interests me, and to this day I've only played through the original twice. Honestly, I can't stand picking up new games only to beat them less than 3 days later and find myself moving on. BioShock was spectacular in almost every single way, don't get me wrong, I just never felt compelled to play through it again immediately after beating it.

@ChiefFreeman: Never played any of the original OPs and people are claiming that this game inspired the COD series. Even if they are correct, I haven't seen much footage for this release so I remain skeptical, however, keeping it on my radar.

@TrueBlue: Thanks for including a game which was not on my list - if Wolfenstein is a day one purchase for you then it is a definite rental for me...and I mean that in a positive way dude not to sound like a d****!

I guess the real question should have been what are some of your day one purchases for this year? Oh, and L4D2 coming out less than a year later, sorry to say, sounds like a cash in to me (again, not trying to sound like a pr*ck)!

@PUREPL7YA: If you had a gun to my head, I'd hem and haw and probably get shot, but assuming that Uncharted 2 has viable MP I'd have to choose that. I loved MW, but I've played great shooters for many years. Uncharted is in a genre that just gets fewer quality titles, so I'd go for that. Oh, and as for Dark Sector... what the hell was the deal with that game? How do you make a game where you mutate into a living weapon, and it STILL sucks? Ok... it wasn't BAD... it just was just dark and blaaaah.

@nappan: You are...a real funny dude you know that?

I totally agree with your opinion, Uncharted looks like a breath of fresh air for the shooter market, however I am really hoping for outstanding production values to warrant the purchase...I'm quite picky when it comes to PS3 titles.

Yeah, and about Dark Sector, cutting people into pieces never got old, but the incredibly shallow storyline, bland and lifeless environments and respawning enemies really got on my nerves. Even at the current $15 selling price I wouldn't even think of revisiting that mess of a game.

Uncharted 2 looks amazing. Tough decision though, because I like all those PS3 games
Posted Jul 15, 2009 2:01 am PT
@M0wen10: Yeah, to hell with it, I might end up purchasing every one of those on release day this year (minus BioShock 2). I passed on plenty of games last year, namely DMC4, SC4, Prince of Persia, Star Wars:FU, COD, L4D, UT3, Fallout 3 and Fable 2.

My PS3 and 360 are starving for new games this year so I am reluctant to splurge on more than a few good titles.

I know there is almost too much. My poor wallet
lol

Tell you the truth, none of these games appeal to me :O. I'm not too big on Infamous or Prototype. Uncharted didn't appeal to me and I didn't enjoy MW but I might rent MW2 (with ODST) and Bioshock didn't appeal to me, but I might try System Shock 2 someday. The rest is the same, they didn't appeal to me. I'm usually skeptical on buying games on day-one, but maybe in the future I will buy Mirror's Edge 2, and Doom 4 on the first day. If Bungie ever remakes Halo: CE, I definitely I'm gonna buy that.

Hmm, I would actually choose Splinter Cell. At least I would if I had an Xbox. Otherwise I would choose Modern Warfare 2.
Posted Jul 26, 2009 9:36 pm PT
@Aragorn33: Splinter Cell is my most anticipated exclusive for this year. I read somewhere that it's been in development since Chaos Theory, supposively...I just hope they get rid of the moronic (yet hilariously scripted) A.I. from previous SC titles...if you've played any of them then you know what I'm talking about. The new AC also looks better than the original in every single way, a definite day one purchase for me.

My question to you is this: would the new Splinter Cell make you consider purchasing a 360? If not, are there any new 360 exclusives that would?
Posted Jul 27, 2009 9:00 am PT
No way, sorry Microsoft. I have the first three Cells on the Gamecube, and the fourth one on PS2. I'm very disappointed that it's not coming for the PS3, and it's not enough to get me to buy a 360. The two Xbox exclusives that I really like are Mass Effect and Halo. I wish they would just release Halo 2 and 3 for the Mac, it's not like it would hurt sales. If Modern Warfare why not Halo?
Posted Jul 27, 2009 9:36 am PT
Never knew Modern Warfare was available for MAC...maybe because the game wasn't developed by Microsoft Game Studios.

Mass Effect, even though available on PC, is definitely a system seller. ME2 will be another day one purchase next year for me hands down. Right now, Mass Effect, Gears of War and Halo 3 (juuust barely) are games reason enough to own a 360. Here's to hoping the new Splinter Cell, Forza Motorsport and Alan Wake can expand upon those boundaries...
Posted Jul 27, 2009 9:49 am PT
Well actually Halo was originally going to be for the Mac, and the final version made it onto the Mac in 2003.

Playa my man I can't believe your gonna wait on borderlands on launch day! Its gonna be a fantastic game but since I'm orginally a x360 gamer and don't know anything about the ps3 yet I bet caution is pretty much a good thing I guess. Still I'm glad to see that you got tekken 6 on your list of must buy through since that series is the best fighter out there in my opinion anyways.
Posted Aug 24, 2009 6:20 pm PT
@BlackBaldwin: Truth be told - I can only afford so many games in a given year!!!

I'll admit it though, Borderlands happens to look refreshingly fantastic...but my entire collection (360) is composed mainly of SHOOTERS and sadly this one doesn't exactly peak my interest when compared to the 20 other games that I will be picking up on release day between now and the end of 2010. I should probably update my blogs more often because I bumped Uncharted 2 up to a day one purchase, so that would leave Borderlands at the top of my "must play" list (try before U buy hehe).

assassin's creed 2 and cod modern warfare2

@mdt_papa: AC2 seems to be shaping up better than the first one in every possible way. MW2 also looks incredible, but it won't be as big of a step for for the series (expecting more of a refinement) nice choices

Its crazy to think that Mass Effect 2, Bioshock 2, and Alan Wake are all coming down the pipeline here. And I'm already deep into Dragon Age Origins. Some darn good games coming this way. Though I must say I really wish Bethesda would release another Elder Scrolls!
