Lately this is the question I find myself asking more and more. I bought Wipeout HD the other day, and I feel pretty good about the purchase. Recently however, I have found myself renting games a lot more. I am not the same gamer I once was, nor is gaming the same hobby of my childhood. As a child, I had limited money for gaming, and less great games came out.

Fast foreward to now, I have more money but I find myself less willing to part with the numerous good games that come out. Note that I rarely play a game online for any length of time. I played the halo's single player, gears of war, and many other games with decent single player campaigns, but I have not gone back to any of them once I finish them the first or second time.

Don't get me wrong. I love gaming and I love supporting developers. I am just having a hard time paying $60 for games I will play through once and never touch again. Even a game like mass effect, which I adored and expected to play a few times, I have not gone back to. GTAIV? Didn't even finish that one.

Now the yearly gaming flood is imminent and I am unsure of what to buy. I want Fable II, Fallout 3, Gears 2, LBP, Resistance 2, Mirror's Edge, and possibly some others like Prince of Persia. I don't see myself dropping around $400 on games for myself around the holiday. I know a game like Fable II is probably a buy due to the amount of time I'd play it. But in reality I'd like to buy all of them. I just dont know if I should? Why do I buy games I won't play more than once?

Back to Wipeout HD. If some of these games were downloadable at a cheap price like this I would buy more games. I know these devs put a lot into their games and I enjoy supporting them, but don't you guys think it's time we see more price tiers a la viva pinata and banjo?

I know this is a rambling post which is why i put it on my blog, so feel free to add in any thoughts.

Yea I get what you mean as well. Games are really expensive even considering in how much you will play them. The only game I spent the full 60 on this gen has been Mgs4 because the mgs series has a special spot in my heart. Everything else I paid 30 or less for:
warhawk 25, folklore 30, orange box (free through trading), call of duty 4(free but my cousin paid 20 bucks for it using coupons). I played most of the early titles on the ps3 by rental and i'm glad I did because I prolly would have regretted dropping 60 bones on them. I like the fact that at least some companies are lowering the prices of ports like lost planet or games that arent graphically up to par like disgaea 3.

Eh, good things are worth paying for. Remember that as an adult, it's time which is the precious commodity, not money. Just go with games that are really entertaining. And of that bunch, it may be Mirror's Edge which may be the best... but that's just a guess.

Welcome to the Club! I myself prefer the single player campaings over multiplayer. My advise to you would be to keep renting games if you consider you can beat them over a weekend, but if these are long games such as RPGs, buy them used or wait a few months till they cost less. A good game will continue being a good game 6 months or a year down the line. Buying games at launch has never been a concern for me since there are good gems out there to play. I recently have played Psychonauts and now Shadow of the Colossus, which make me forget that there are even "NextGen" consoles. So just be patient and you'll eventualy see all those great games you want to play for cheap.

I have the same problems. I thought I would stop being picky about the games that I buy, but now that I have more income, I'm even pickier.

Yup, its tougher now than it was back when I was still in high school and could spend my entire paycheck on games. There are a lot more responsibilities and even though I can afford to get all the games I want this holiday season, I just cant justify $400 just on games. I mean even if I do get all the games i want, I probably wont even have time to play them all. Most of the games I'm looking to buy this holiday season are online games (SOCOM, R2, Motorstorm, LBP) and I usually spend tens of hours playing online games. So I'll probably have to buy them all. so single player games like Mirror's Edge, PoP etc. would have to be rentals for me. I guess since you focus exclusively on single player games, you could rent these games first, beat their campaigns and then decide whether you like them enough to go back & play them again, that should tell you which game deserves your $60. It's like renting movies vs buying them. You could probably rent a Street Kings and have a blast watching it, but you know you gotta have a movie like Fargo in your collection so you could watch it anytime you want.

A lot of games these days drop in price REALLY quickly. What I would do is either wait for the second tier titles to drop half what they are now or just rent those. Im like you in the sense that Multiplayer gaming (competitive) is not that appealing anymore. Its just a time sink that leads to no where...for what? A rank?

What I plan to do this holiday season is buy LBP because its replayability is just unfathomable, and Fable 2. The coop is the reason I am buying it cause it adds LOTS to the single player game. Fallout 3 is a great rental but do you need to play it more than once? Same with Resistance. THe MP might be good but just rent it and move on. Gears multi imo is bad...clumsy and ...bad, but the single player is fun, so rent it and move on.

Yeah, i'm like that as well.
Not that this was one of your options, but buy De Blob. It's the sex.

I find my backlog preventing me from buying games. I really hate that there's games on there that I haven't beat in 1-2 years I've had them so it has bearing if I buy a PC RPG or something along those lines.

I got into the GOG.com beta and really would love to buy the Descent series but I can't force myself to, Also I'd like to pick up some titles I missed like Dark Sector and when the game gets discounted a bit, Star Wars the force unleashed, but I know it probably won't happen because my backlog.

I won't let that prevent me from buying a lot of the upcoming games I want like Fable 2, Fallout 3, and even games like Blitz the League 2 (if it's good) just because I know that game will eat up my time and be something different than the other games.

I find myself not wanting to replay games as much... as such I usually find a game that is going to stay the most fresh for the longest time.

I do wish there was a pricing tier somewhere between Arcade games $15 (1200 pts) and $60... It seems like there should be some sort of game that fits in there. And there is... all the games I pick up used or after they have been out a year or so.

thanks for the replies guys. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I necessarily think the games arent WORTH the 60 bones, its more that I just can't justify paying that much for so many games in such a short span, especially since I can get em for less, and many I never replay.

It's a good situation to be in though. There are so many great games nowadays that I can't get to them all. Having too many great games is not a bad thing at all Im just trying to maximize my experience while minimizing costs.
