GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con
Friday, Jan 18, 2008

Almost 7 years ago I was at work looking for a way to kill time. Loving video games, I decided to type videogames.com into the web browser and thus I ended up here on GameSpot. I stumbled upon the forums looking for information about a game, (don't ask me which one because I'll be damned if I can remember) instead I found a great community of people.

Patrick, N3MO, Mete, and JonathanL welcomed me with open arms and thus my times on the GS boards began. Starting out as humble JMravlja_Basic with a crapload of numbers after the "basic," I started getting the hang of the boards. I spent much of my time in GGD where it was common to see the moderators and admin interact with the forum population and get into some great game discussion.. As the site grew the boards changed, each iteration becoming better, allowing us to do more things, be a little more individualistic and really getting to know the people we spent the majority of time with.

Eventually I was given the honor of becoming a moderator and while the site had taken a downturn, in my opinion, in regards to user/mod/admin interaction I couldn't help but think that I could make a difference in trying to rekindle the interactions that had been lost. My first order of business was to find a board that had been pretty much neglected. That didn't take long as I noticed OT was in need of some intervention.

OT was and is a great board, maybe not as great as it once was, but there are some great people still there. It's always been seen as the bastard child of GS but there are some great conversations to be had and more importantly some great friends to be made. I made probably what will be the closest friend I'll ever have there, *Looks at Ms Sands and then kicks her* along with so many great people that I'd get tired just trying to name you all. But you all know who you are. I loved joking, talking and getting to each and every one of you. Anyway....it all comes down to this simple thing.

I'm leaving. GameSpot just isn't the site that I fell in love with long ago. While there are still some great people to meet, it just isn't the same. More and more the site spirals into becoming an overbearing bland shell of it's former self. Great users are suspended; banned for making jokes that are easily recognizable as jokes if the mod team would bother reading the context of what is said. But therein lies the issue. The Mods and Admin just don't care about the users anymore. Less and less do they bother to take the time to get to know anyone instead they prefer to spend their time moderating out of a queue that does nothing but pop up an infraction if someone reads something that they don't agree with and reports it. Admin are more rare than a copy of Nintendo World Championships: Gold Edition and when they do appear it's usually in a superficial "Hi" and "bye" manner.

The last straw came with the firing of Jeff and now the subsequent departures of the last few respectable reviewers GameSpot had. Sorry GS....I know it's not your fault but CNet screwed you, and not even in the good way. In my eyes your credibility is shot and now without a stable community, a mod team that is sub par (there are some good ones left so don't think that this is to everyone) and Admin that doesn't show it's face on the boards. I just have nothing to stay here for.

If any of you want to talk to me please feel free to join me on my own site http://www.gamersperspective.com/ and it's forums it's just starting out....it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that GS has (yet) but it has an Admin team that will never be out of reach, a solid bunch of users on our boards and a dedication to always being there for their users. And to everyone that voted for me and will vote for me on the OTcars....thank you. It's always been an honor to be respected amongst my fellow users. I will stop back in to read the results. But it wont be as a logged in user.

Good luck to everyone and I hope to see you on my site......

The GameSpot I came to know and love won't be the same without you. You know that. We had some great times in OT and OT2....wow, that seems like a long time ago, doesn't it? But, the good times won't have to end because I'll see you at GP. ^_^ The site is losing a great poster and a wonderful ex-mod. Best of luck outside of GS

I don't think it's that they don't care, but I believe the queue is not a good thing. It de-emphasizes community moderation, which gives moderators a lack of context, both with the post itself and the poster's style. Administration is extremely poor, though. I'm reasonably certain that Bethany doesn't exist, and it seems like every time that someone starts building some ties with the community, they're taken away from the community aspect of the site.

Anyways, check out thevirtualunderground.net too, if you haven't already.

But.. I wub you.

It's sad to see you go.
Posted Jan 18, 2008 6:08 pm PT
I think you're making a mistake.
Posted Jan 18, 2008 6:14 pm PT
I'll miss you Jeremy, but I understand. This site isn't as it used to be, I agree. I remember the night I met you over 2 years ago in OT. I'm so glad we became friends

Good luck to you and everything you do. Maybe someday we'll "bump" into each other somewhere *hugs* love ya bunches

It's sad that you're leaving, but I will see you in your forum.
Posted Jan 18, 2008 6:39 pm PT
I've said it over and over that GS has gone downhill. Everyone is moderating everyone, stupid fad topics being repeated... It's getting so old and so lame. What happened to the good ol' GS and OT?
Posted Jan 18, 2008 6:42 pm PT
I agree with Rei,and most of the people who I enjoyed as fellow forumites here are now gone.
Posted Jan 18, 2008 6:58 pm PT
I hate when people leave!!!!! It all started with Jeff and then sooooooo many others followed!
Posted Jan 18, 2008 7:08 pm PT
ill miss you, im holding on as long as a i can before i have to leave because it gets so bad
Posted Jan 18, 2008 7:24 pm PT
I always thoguht you were a stand-up guy, Jeremy, and when you endeared yourself to the OT community like no one ever had I knew that you really cared about this community like few others. Sorry to see you go, but like many others including yourself, I've also moved off-site. It sucks, it really sucks, that it's all going this way, but there's really no stopping it now. Maybe you'll swing by www.thevirtualundergound.net sometime?
Posted Jan 18, 2008 8:04 pm PT
Good luck, the site will suffer with the loss of your two cents.
Posted Jan 18, 2008 8:48 pm PT
Take care Jer...I'll see you at gamersperspective.

Farewell Omni... I'll try to keep up the ellipses tradition as long as I can... but you're not the only one discouraged by how things are done these days. This site really isn't the same, and what's sad is that I can still remember every good and great phase that GS has had.
Posted Jan 19, 2008 12:58 am PT
One by one GSs' most respected people leave.
Posted Jan 19, 2008 12:59 am PT
The staff I loved and the people I respected are leaving left and right.

I would join the forums but it is not loading for me.
Posted Jan 19, 2008 3:05 am PT
Good luck with GP. I think it speaks volumes about the general attitudes to the community that so many long term users are leaving the site for good.
Posted Jan 19, 2008 4:07 am PT
Its good you are leaving. This place is goind down hill big time and you have other things to do in life than just waste time around here Good luck with your site
Posted Jan 19, 2008 5:45 am PT
Its a shame to see so many good people leave this site, why GS ?? What have you done !!!?!?!?! *sigh* : (
Posted Jan 19, 2008 6:07 am PT
You leave me little choice. I'll have to visit this site now. You weren't there to rear my child Omni but I still see some importance in being around you. I "will" see you around.
Posted Jan 19, 2008 7:05 am PT
I feel your pain Jeremy. I don't need to wish you luck because I know your new site is a success. The shame here is all the quality people leaving GS and you top the list. See you down the road
Posted Jan 19, 2008 7:20 am PT
Yet another one of GS's well respected users leave. What will happen to GS?

Posted Jan 19, 2008 10:19 am PT
This really is turning into the Downfall of what used to be a good gaming site(GS),I'll still see you around thoughbut this just goes to show how damaged GS is.Anyways it sucks that your leaving since you have been a staple on this site for years
Posted Jan 19, 2008 11:58 am PT
Sorry you're leaving, Omni. We never spoke much, if at all, but your rapport with users in OT has been a personal inspiration. Good luck.
Posted Jan 19, 2008 2:46 pm PT
Before you go, could I lend some money? I'd gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.
Posted Jan 20, 2008 12:50 pm PT
Good luck with what ever u plan 2 do next
Posted Jan 20, 2008 1:52 pm PT
Egonga..isn't it the second Tuesday of next week?
Posted Jan 20, 2008 2:59 pm PT
Shhh! You're weakening my bargaining position.
Posted Jan 21, 2008 2:12 pm PT
O_o oops sorry...I was just trying to help you get out of paying at all... >_>
Posted Jan 21, 2008 3:26 pm PT
We will miss you Omni. You were the first mod I saw when I came here, and over the years one of the most active ones as well. Not many seem to take the time out and just talk on the boards, be seen as people. I agree with most everything you said. In any case, there's a rumor that Jeff G. and Vince Broady, possibly along with others who have left, are looking to start up a "New" GameSpot of sorts, if this is true I hope to see you there perhaps.

Oh, and watch out for the Evil Gerbils of Death, they will forever stalk you, and all of mankind. Looking for a weakness to exploit, and make us all slaves of Gerbil kind, or at least the few of us who aren't devoured in the revolt. Gerbil.
Posted Jan 22, 2008 2:10 pm PT
Well Jeremy what can i say? I've known you for a good long time mate. Way before i began speaking to you 3 or 4 years back. Back when i was going by the name of Clockwork_Yellow and i would post on the boards, wishing that you would speak to me or at least acknowledge me. Sad i know. I'm just so glad that i'm a part of your new project, i'm honoured to write for your site and converse with great people like you and Jess.

It really is a great shame that you are leaving mate but i know you haven't made this decision lightly, and i know how much this site truly means to you. Your legacy will never be forgotten.
Posted Jan 22, 2008 6:15 pm PT
For god's sake, its only a website. Your monologue makes it seem like some sort've chore to come here and post: be real, its not.
Posted Jan 30, 2008 12:07 pm PT
I was wondering why you weren't posting...
Posted Feb 5, 2008 6:28 pm PT
Omni dude....u're leaving GS??.......partaayyyy!!!
Posted Mar 4, 2008 10:50 am PT
