You know, one of the things about birthdays is that the older you get, the less fun they tend to be. And this one by rights should be no exception to me.

FORTY!?!?!?! WTF?!?!?!? When did I get HERE? Is that why the postman gives me funny looks when he delivers my Shojo Beat? Didn't I used to think twenty-eight was old? Does this mean I have to finally give up all my Converse sneakers now? Eh, oh well. I've lived a long time being an immature brat, no need to change my wicked ways now.

All that flies through my head, and straight out the other side. Of course, it was followed up with the abject terror that my sisters would show up with the obligatory tombstone cake and black balloons that usually herald those monumental birthdays in my family. Terror at having my age rubbed in my face? Um, not really... I had about 3 hours of sleep before the calls from friends started rolling in. Ew, cheerful people before I've had my coffee. If they weren't my friends I'd wish them into a bottomless pit of horror, despair and small sharp objects. I was aiming for naptime, and siblings arriving meant me having to act like there was nothing I'd rather do than look like a frank idiot in an Over The Hill hat. Nap, forced merriment, nap, forced merriment....heck, it's DAYLIGHT out there! You want me awake AND gleeful in strong sunlight? *shudder* Fortunately, the nap was able to take precedence, as only one sister showed up and not until a few hours ago. And she arrived sans the cornball claptrap party favors. THANK YOU, LORD.

So now I sit here, trying to recap some message of what it's like surviving four decades, and what I come up with is... meh, whatever. Yah, the body's been around the block a few times but the soul is the same as it ever was. I didn't need bells and whistles, but just hearing from my friends here and there (though I strongly question their clock-reading skills) has been more than satisfying for me. Last week, I got taken out to lunch and just before that to a Halloween haunted house, and that was actually a lot more awesome than anything I could have gotten wrapped up. (yeah, yeah, who doesn't like material stuff? But one was a friend who had joined up with the Air Force that I hadn't seen in a while, and it was great getting the crowd together - we all work different hours, so it took some juggling to pull us all togeter into one group!) Perhaps as birthdays go, pretty low key, but I'm content with it. Shoot, I must be getting old.... Trying to reflect on the futility of aging isn't really me, and definitely I don't want to wax maudlin about it. Big whoop, I'm older. My life is good and grand, and it has nothing to do with my ability or luck in surviving to this age. No dramatic changes, no feelings of a life wasted or whatever. I have what's important to me, and so I'm quite happy, birthday or not.

So wish me happy birthday, and stick around for a while, yes? Because all of you are part of what makes my life a joyous thing indeed (and I don't have to worry about any of you calling me at naptime, either).

Woo! Happy Fourtieth Birthday Neko! ^_^ You're still young so you shouldn't mind your postman staring at you when you get new issues of Shojo Beat, everyone loves a little bit of manga once in a while anyway

Wow! You're 40!? From the way you express yourself i always figured you be a lot younger . Then again, i'm already in my mid 20's and it still feels weird when the kiddies call me "sir", so i guess i'm also on my way there. Happy Birthday anyway.

That makes you 20 years and 7 days old than I! Not to rub it in or anything, of course

Never give up your Converse, and never give up videogames! Huzzah!

I'm sorry, I laughed at the post man part but don't think of it like that, think of it as getting wiser and more mature.
Happy birthday!

Happy Birthday , 40 huh? That is quite the mild stone. And don't feel bad, I celebrate almost everything in a low key style and I'm 23...maybe I should reassess some things . Oh, and can I have your number so that I can call you and the most inopportune times possible .

also, I thought the title was about the song 'Happy Birthday to Me' by Bulldog Mansion xD but yeah, good job on surviving for 40 years, you're at middle age! you win a mid-life crisis and encroahing health problems

It's your day Neko so enjoy it and to hell about what age you're at now. You wear Converse? You're one cool lady.

Happy 40th B Day! You know, there are some words, I've known since I was little...(strangely, I'm not allowed to say them...)

Well that makes two around these part to roll over the hill in the past few days. Happy birthday! And remember, you're allowed to celebrate your birthday for as many days as you are years old which means you should try and get as many free drinks and cake for a few weeks at least.

No, you don't have to give up all your Converse shoes. You are allowed to keep your Jack Purcells, and maybe your all-black Chuck Taylor low-tops.

When people turn 20-something and whinge that they are old, I want to stab them in the face. Not because I am old and am jealous of their youth (I'm in my twenties any way, at least for a few more months), but I've just always thought it was a dumb thing to say. Just keep living, there is plenty to look forward to, plenty of knowledge to gain, plenty of experiences to share and people to meet.

All that said, tombstone cakes sound awesome, will have to keep that one in mind!

Happy birthday! Trust me when I say that I am well aware of how touchy women can get about their birthdays so I'm not going to give any of my normal jabs Although I will admit that I like when people have October birthdays because the halloween atmosphere make's it easier for something I enjoy quite a bit.. for some reason I can't resist scaring the sh*t out of the birthday girl/boy at least once to remind them that it's good they have managed to live as long they have thus far

It was a tiny bit like that with my thirteenth, but it was just one sister and imaginary freinds.@w@

Happy bday

Happy birthday!

I completely agree with your first statement about birthdays gradually losing their fun. I turned 22 this year and it was seriously the first ho-hum birth day I've ever had. Now I see why adults don't care all that much about their birthdays. They lose the fun factor and so they're then just like every other day, but with the frequent phone calls and potential for cake.

If it's any comfort my wife will be 40 in May.
Happy birthday!

Happy Birthday!! As someone who have been riding the 40 train for a couple of months now, it's the same train as 30 and 20, just with a few more experience points.

Happy Birthday!!!

Happy B-Day Neko!! I hit 40 on the 15th so I'm in the same boat as you. Us Libras rock by the way, but you knew that already.

Happy Birthday! Only 40? I remember way back when I was 40, almost 6 years ago. You've still got plenty of good living to do. Now when you hit 45, that when it all goes downhill

Happy Birthday Neko, my how time flies.
Posted Oct 20, 2008 3:25 pm PT
I thought your turned thirty nine this year. And last year. And next year.

Happy *ahem* ...belated... birthday! I'm glad that nocturnal employment wasn't too dissonant with family celebrations. I'm also glad that you've chosen to accept the big 4-0 with some sensible (and disturbing) maturity. I've seen some ugly birthdays before. Anyway, yeah, I'm still around. FBI hasn't caught on to my illicit activities as Crime Lord of Trenton or anything... How are things?

Happy birthday Neko, and remember; you're only as old as you feel you are. And besides, for a 40 year old you're really really cool. There aren't many people in their forties who can say that. Just don't turn into The Grinch once you hit 50.

Happy B-Day Neko Sorry it took so long to post a comment

Happy Birthday!! I probably would have hung up on them if I hadn't had my coffee yet
Posted Nov 1, 2008 11:20 am PT
Happy belated Birthday! I just saw the post. 40, I know how you feel...or at least I will in about 2 years.
