Hiya, peeps!

Well, like the title says, I could use a bit of help! Two of my nephew's birthdays are coming up - one's getting a PSP, and the other one is getting a DS. The older one that's getting the PSP, I have no problems buying for because we like a lot of the same games (yay, I got somebody I can trade games with now!) but the younger one is a bit tougher. He does like Naruto and Bleach, so I'm personally planning on picking him up one of those. Thing is, I'm the Master Gaming Guru for the rest of the clueless aunts, uncles and parents of the family ("Jeanne D'Arc? Isn't that supposed to be Joan of Arc? No wonder kids are failing history...." ) and it was noted that my nephew likes playing World Of Warcraft. Sure, there's got to be something like that for that system, right? It's a GAME machine, there's bound to be....AAAAARGGGGH! I can think of plenty of J-RPG's, but is there anything more Western out there? So far, my searches have only turned up PC games. So I do what any GS member would do - BLOG! Recommendations would be very helpful; bear in mind the little beast will be turning 12.

Greatly appreciated, darlings! Neko

EDIT: I realize it's unlikely to find a Western game for the DS, but if there's a J-RPG with similar gameplay, I'll run with that, too.

i'd love some WoW action on the DS

Heh, in my last comment you didn't seem to mean wht I meant by Koneko, I had meant Spooksspawn, because Neko is Japenese for cat and Koneko is japenese for kitten. And an mmorpg for a portable sistem? OMFGROFLMAOOL! The closest thing to that is Metroid Prime Hunters. Or did you mean something else?

Hmm, Portable MMORPG are few and far between Animal Crossing is sorta like it just non voilent. Or how about one of the Final Fantasty games like Final Fantasty 3 for DS, thats supposidly really good.

Maybe something like FF Revenant Wings or Lunar Knights would work? You couldn't go wrong with one of the Castlevania games too.

you got me kid sorry i can't help
Posted Jun 21, 2008 12:29 pm PT
Pokemon Pearl and Diamond are about as similar i can hink of. Loads of levelling, free roaming enviroment, online battles. My mates are adicted to it.

I'm also going to go with either Pokemon Pearl/Diamond or even Zelda Phantom Hourglass as wow plays abit like an action rpg

I have no idea where to find an MMORPG style game for the DS Sorry Neko! Although, if you're going to be getting him either Naruto or Bleahc, make sure to get him a Bleach game for the DS instead. I played Naruto: Jinja Destiny and it wasn't that good (meanwhile, I'v eheard doog things from Bleach Blade of Fate)

Hey Neko. My child is standing here insisting that I recommend one of the pokemon games. He has Diamond and Pearl and says they are both awesome. I don't play rpg's of any type so I am useless on this particular quest.

well I don't think there is any WoW like game right now. check out some of the FF: Crystal Chronicle spin-off games on DS, Rings of Fate? or something is similar to WoW... I think. oh yeah since he likes bleach, get Bleach: Blade of Fates or whatever its called. it's the DS bleach game by Treasure, I hear it's really fun.

the DS plays GBA games right? last time i checked, so get Fire Emblem.
Posted Jun 21, 2008 2:42 pm PT
when does that Sonic RPG come out? BioWare is developing it, so it should be western enough
Posted Jun 21, 2008 3:34 pm PT
Definite one of the newer Pokemon games, that should be a lock for him to like. Then again you could always buy the most quality J-RPG for the system and go with The World Ends With You which has an interactive action like battle system. Either way, I think your nephew would be pleased.

"Jeanne D'Arc? Isn't that supposed to be Joan of Arc? No wonder kids are failing history...."
I laughted for 5 mins at that line
your right, the market is over flowing with J-RPGs for the portable but nothing westren, sorry but I don`t think I know anything good enough to pass as westren

Hmmm...Nope, I got nothing.

I don't think the DS has any Western RPGs, just some JRPGs. You COULD try to find old copies of Fire Emblem or Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones for the GBA like someone else said. Those are great, but they are more along the lines of a turn-based strategy game with light RPG elements. In the same category there is Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, but that has about as much RPG elements as Half-Life 2.

I couldn't even recommend any of the JRPGs anyway, I don't like the genre anymore.

I'll have to agree on any Pokemon games here. Also, I vaguely remember hearing that Orcs and Elves played kind of like a first-person WoW, but don't take my word for that.

Professor Layton!

Sure it's a puzzle game but....
Posted Jun 21, 2008 9:02 pm PT
Ninja Gaiden DS. Definitely

I second Proffessor Layton as a great game, but it's outside the genre you were looking for. It might fire up similar synapses though.

I also highly recommend the Castlevania games. They are pretty much 2D action platformers at their core, but have RPG elements (leveling up, synthesizing weapons, acquiring new spells throughout the game). I think Dawn of Sorrow is slightly better than Portrait of Ruin.

There aren't any MMO's I think, but there're RPG's like some and then there's Ninja Gaiden

Ugh, I wish I could help you out, my friend. Like someone people have said before, Fire Emblem is probably a good bet.

Oh how I wish I owned a DS....

12 years old and interested in WoW... thats a tough one...

Beyond the silly idea that anyone geeking on such a MMO would even bother to play something else, the DS is a good departure. As for similar WoW games... not much selection. Like others suggested, Fire Emblem is a decent RPG, but kind of stale. Castlevania is awesome, but more of a action platformer. Advance Wars is a personal favorite and it deals a lot with modern war tech and such... not sure if thats the western flavor you wanted for the little one, but great game none the less

WoW for the DS.....nothing comes to mind. But there has to be a good DS game out there. How about "The wold ends with you"?
Posted Jun 23, 2008 7:05 am PT
Actually Neko....

I don't mean to put a hamper on your search for the perfect game but when I was addicted to WoW I had very little interest in other games. So if you are shopping for a DS game it could be tough. Just a heads up.

A quick heads-up...Toys R Us is doing buy 2 get 1 free on ALL DS titles this week (ends Saturday). As for MMO style games, I don't think any exist. I'm currently playing Lego Indy and just finished Luminous Arc. Both are a lot of fun. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring Of Fates is enjoyable as well, even though it didn't get good reviews. I love Professor Layton and Bleach is great as a multi-player brawl. Other than that, I don't really have any other ideas except Final Fantasy Tactics A-2...at least until Dragon Quest 4, 5, & 6 come out. Oh, there is DQ Monsters: Joker...but I really don't know how much there is to do online. That's about all for me. All the best and say hi to the 'Spouse for me...

The closest you're going to get on the DS is something like Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings or Heroes of Mana -- which really aren't JRPGs -- more like real-time SRPGs. Still, they're pretty fun...
