Wow, what a storm! I've never experienced anything like that before in my life. Germany, like most of the other countries in Northern and Central Europe, was a total mess yesterday. The railway system had been shut down, school children were sent home, fallen trees all over the place, some regions lost power, turned over trucks and cars on the streets and autobahns, destroyed buildings and bridges, and 10 deaths in Germany so far, 29 in Europe. That was, as far as I know, the first time that our entire country was affected by a storm, not only particular regions as usual.
As I already said in my previous comments, my partner got nearly hit by a falling tree on his way back home yesterday, it missed him only by inches. It took both of us quite a while to get over the shock, as you can imagine.
Fortunately the worst is over now and the state of emergency in Berlin has been lifted. I couldn't find anything new about Austria, Switzerland and Poland, but I hope you are all safe too.
To give you an idea how it looked like in Europe yesterday I added some pictures.

I know, it was crazy! I even took the lift to get to my friend's apartment last night, even though she only lives one floor above, because I didn't want to take the stairs which requires to go on the balcony. I live on the twelfth floor, the storm sort of scared me...I hope you're both fine, you and your boyfriend! Thank god it's over...that was one hell of a storm...

Glad to hear your okay. It's unbelievable weather around the world. In Malibu Beach California they have SNOW! Arizona SNOW! These are places which are usually hot. I couldn't believe the news last night when they were showing what Kyrill was causing across Europe. Unbelievable! This is really scary. Take care.

Gald you're ok as well. Over here in CH we didn't had much trouble. We had a lot worse a few years ago. Berlin HB looks poorly built. Open only a few months and now it had to be evacuated because it was falling apart...

WOW those are some crazy pics. The important thing is that you and your loved ones are ok, I hope everything is more or less back to normal for you.

Wow, I hadn't even heard of the storm (I don't watch the news... ever, it just scares me too much). I'm just happy you are okay, and your boy too... your heart must have been running so high before you heard of everybody you care about.

Thank God you and your partner are safe, Nacht! What a fright. Be safe!

Woah - I'm getting flashbacks of the hurricane I went through a couple of years ago. There's no escaping the weather it seems...
Glad you're ok...and a couple of pics that will surely be captioned in a future email.

Thank you so much everyone for your kind comments and concern.
That really was quite an adventure, but my family and friends are all fine, as far as I can tell. Speaking of which, I'm off to my parents for dinner in a minute (I'm already too late, as usual
), but I'll talk to you later tonight. Take care.
Iphigenie: I haven't forgotten you, I just had not enough time to answer you yet.

Glad you and your friend are OK. Good luck with the clean up.

Hi, Nacht. Glad to hear that you and yours are okay. The BBC has said the UK and Germany have been the worst hit. There are some pictures here.
Where I live, some falling trees blocked roads, but I have some trees and they lost only a few twigs.

Ohh My God I didnt watch the news this past days and Europe is in CaoS. I'm glad you and your partner are fine. I live in Puerto Rico so We here have big Hurricanes all the time and it's so incredible what nature can destroy in only seconds.

I didn't even know Europe got hit with hurricanes. Glad to hear that everyone you know is safe. Be careful though--some trees might still fall over because the soil and root structure might be weakened, or a branch might snap off later on. Stay safe.

Thanks again for all the kind words!
Elin: You can say that again! It was about 150 kph where I live, and about 200 kph in the alps. Absolutely crazy! What about Sweden? I didn't hear anything, but you said you had lost your internet connection and phone for about four hours; was that because of the storm?
Ramona: I saw pictures from around Cologne and Bonn in the news. I think Kyrill hit your region a bit harder than Düsseldorf and the Ruhrgebiet. I'm glad to hear you're fine too. I wouldn't have dared to go on a balcony either, no way!
Did you hear the weather forecast for the next week? Up to 20 degrees colder than now and snow storms! Brrr... And you said we can't go ice skating because of the warm weather.
April: Unbelievable indeed. I saw the pictures of California in the news. I guess that's the snow we are supposed to have over here now, but instead it's about 12-16 degree Celsius (up to 20 degree Celsius in Austria - the last night!). Personally I don't complain about mild temperatures, but it's just not right at this time of the year. We humans can cope with this unnatural rhythm somehow, but what about all the poor animals and plants?

dju: Glad to hear you hadn't much trouble and are safe.
Oh, and as for Berlin HB, that's so...
They said in the news that there will be further investigations as to how this could possibly have happened. Uhm, well, let me guess...
Greta: Yes, we are all fine and it's more or less back to normal again. Apart from some fallen trees nothing more serious happened in my neighbourhood.
Iphigenie: You're right, I was a bit concerned about friends and family members who live in more affected regions, but luckily they are all okay.

Opal: I stayed at home the whole day, so I was pretty safe, but my partner had to work outdoors, most of the time alone, and I called him at least five times yesterday to check if he's okay. I'm usually not easily frightened, but yesterday was kind of an exception.
mrn: I doubt that it was as bad as the hurricanes you guys in the US are usually dealing with, but it certainly was enough to scare us Europeans quite a bit.
Thanks for stopping by, IndianaMom. I'm in the lucky position that nothing serious happened to our house, but some people certainly will need luck with their clean ups, especially those in the north and south.

Ethan: I'm so glad to hear from you. I have to admit I was a bit concerned.
I constantly switched between German news and BBC yesterday and the pictures from the UK were really scary, especially those of the coast. I'm glad the worst you experienced was the loss of a few twigs.
tv_addictt: Well, that's what I thought about Germany until we had all the '100-year floods' some years ago, and now a country-wide storm... I wonder what comes next.
Isa: The destruction the hurricanes cause in your country is really unbelievable. As I said before, Kyrill was nothing compared to these hurricanes, but it was enough for my taste...
home: Well, it came a bit as a surprise for me too. They said something about a huge storm in the news the day before yesterday, but I hadn't expected anything like that. No need to worry, I'll stay away from trees wherever possible.
------------------------------------------------
I think this was my longest comment (or rather comments) I ever wrote, and I hope I didn't make too many mistakes. Besides, my 'computer time' is over
, at least for the next hour or so, but I'll try to come back later (just in case you're wondering where I am, Greta and Elin.
)

No, I did not hear next weeks weather forecast, and if you're right, I refuse to. That can't be true! Yes, I want to go ice skating, but not on the streets! Help...the weather is just crazy right now. I really hope we don't get another storm!
Posted Jan 19, 2007 1:56 pm PT
What, you don't like ice skating on the streets? Now, wouldn't that be fun?
I saw it on "Deutsches Wetter Fernsehen", a digital channel that shows weather reports 24/7, non stop (don't ask, Jan subscribed to it... ).
Have to go now, hope to talk to you later (if you're still awake when I'm back

I think most of the cars that were crashed were just parking and nobody was in there...but a few people actually died in their cars. A storm like that is really scary, I'm glad nobody I know got hurt.
Posted Jan 20, 2007 4:10 am PT
Natch, whoosh!
Those photos are scary. I know the reality was much scarier. I am glad your partner was unharmed by the falling tree.
Honestly, yes I am an uninformed American, I never knew Europe or UK got storms like our hurricanes. Weather is amazing and awesome. Take care and hug your loved ones tight. Snow? In Malibu? We have sleet in south Louisiana right now. What is going on? The WeatherGods must have it in for us.

Hell: Ramona is right, most cars were empty when they got hit by a tree, but I heard about at least three people who died in their car.
Ramona: I'm glad to hear nobody you know got hurt. I lost my internet connection the last one and a half days, and the DB has still big trouble here in the Ruhrgebiet, but other than that it's almost back to normal again.
Greta: Hi!
Well, I got the computer back, but unfortunately not the internet connection...
Hope you had a great weekend, and I missed you too.
Hi daluwe! I'm glad you're okay too. The last I heard was something about up to 225 kph, but I can't remember if it had been in Germany or Austria. Absolutely crazy! I only hope they're wrong with the snow storms they predicted for the next week...
Ethan: I hope you have good snow tyres then.
That's one reason why I prefer the trains most of the time.

I hope you're online now, I've only 30 minutes left until it's time to go to bed (alarm clock goes off in four and a half hours).

Hey there, Nachtie, look after yourself! And the next time you're on that bus, hold on tight...
If your injuries were the driver's fault, you should ask the bus company for damages.
