I just don't learn... I keep using my 60GB PS3 to play PS2 games and it has a habit of punishing me for it. I can't tell you how many times it has corrupted memory cards on me. It doesn't matter what game it seems because the cause of it seems to be random. The issue I have is that thisproblem has been around since the launch of the goddamn unit and Sony never bothered to address it. And honestly playing PS2 games on a PS2 on my TV is not easy on the eyes. The PS3's upscaling abilities make these games tolerable on a HD screen. I *ALMOST* lost over 30 hours in my Ar tonelico II journey. Thankfully I didn't shut off after I last saved and went to save again. When I went to save it said something about the operation wasn't able to be completed and none of my files showed up. So I changed cards and was able to save... while I lost one of the files I saved for a replay for the multiple endings I at least was able to save what I have done overall. It burns me that this keeps happening and that Sony doesn't fully support their products like they should. BC is a big deal to a lot of people. And I find it to be an important feature for me. Just like it was with the PS2 to play PSX games. About 98% of the time I am using my PS3, it's for PS2 games. I didn't expect Sony to drop the ball this gen and not have the software that would con me into playing. After I get through Ar tonelico II I think I am just going to disconenct my PS3 until something worthwhile come out on the PS3. Sony makes it very difficult for me to like their unit. Outside of being a decent Blu-Ray player, I can't think of one positive thing about it (BC would be something positive if it was reliable and safe).

Aww... sorry to hear that... Yeah, for some reason, both MS and Sony feel that BC just isn't something they should be allocating their time towards, which is a shame actually..

This is the first time I've heard of this problem, good thing though, I was planning to get a PS3, because I still have a lot of PS2 games to play. Nothing would piss me off more than loosing saved data

After searching for about half an hour for the 60 gb backwards compatible model, I gave up hope in what I figured was a futile quest. So, I bought the 80 gb model instead. Sure, it sucks that I can't play my favorite PS2 games on my PS3 (just recently, I've been salivating over the thought of playing Okami again), but what sucks harder is my PS2 is on the fritz.

I'm a slave to Sony. *looks at TV and camera AND various playstations*

Difference between MS and Sony with BC is that MS had to create am emulator for each game in order to get them running on the 360. Sony has a method in place for BC that runs off a single emulator [Hardware and Software varities] that could be patched to fix issues that some games have with it. Problem is Sony has never updated the emulation software and doesn't plan on doing so. Microsoft at least poured effort into the cause. And since the Classics line up has been an overall success for MS, I can see them expanding the BC list over time. But the issue with the PS3 is that it's a universal issue that can happen with any game. So it's most likely a bug in the memory card emulation [I don't know why Sony doesn't allow you to just use your PS2 memory cards with the adpator they already sell.].

I haven't had that bug yet, but after hearing about your experience a while back I've been careful to back up my PS1 and PS2 saves periodically in case they corrupt. So far I've had a couple of failed loads on my Persona 4 saves, but retrying has seemed to fix that on both occasions. I did lose a single save from that game, too, which was mysterious.

Also, I still think that the upconverting doesn't do much of anything and PS2 games still look like ass on my HDTV. The PS3's obnoxious method of displaying widescreen stuff and requiring you to manually stretch it to fill the screen kind of sucks too, but maybe that's just with the software BC 80GB unit that I have, and not the older full BC one.

I haven't had any PS2 corrupts on my PS3, and I use it for PS2 games a good bit. Maybe I'm just lucky. The only problem that I did have, twice, is that a save would disappear from my card, but the total space used indicates that it's still there, hidden. Basically I need to delete that card and start over to get it back. However, I'm very paranoid about my saves, and I back up copies on a memory stick and a PS2 memory card each time I end the game,

BC is VERY important to me too, I've used my ps2 to play a whole bunch of psx games... I'm pretty sure that Sony and MS knows how much people want it, but I suspect that they ignore that fact because there's more money to earn by focusing on new games instead.

With my 60GB I need to manually set if the game is being displayed in Normal or Widescreen as well, Lay. And as for PS2 games on my screen, there is really a big difference between hooking up a PS2 with component cables versus the PS3 with HDMI. Which is why I have been stubborn about playing PS2 games on my PS3. Guess I will have to hook up the PS2 in the retro corner and play there.

I'm just glad you told me about that problem, since the first time my PS3 went blank trying to load a corrupt virtual memory card I thought it was broken. It still happens to me all the time, to the point that I create separate virtual PS2 cards for each game and back them up to flash memory after each play session.

I bought the PS3 far ahead of my usual timetable to make sure I got a unit with hardware BC, but the memory card problems are such a pain that it deters me from wanting to play PS2 games on it. I'm starting to wonder why I shouldn't just sell the 60gb and get a cheaper 80gb model... broken BC isn't much different than no BC.

There is a lot of work involved in keeping your PS2 data safe. It's just a hassle to have to do it every goddamn time I want to shut off for the evening.

Its a good console to play current gen games on.

The PS3 doesn't offer me much overall in current gen releases. The 360 has been better in that regard for me.
