300’s shallow storyline and cardboard cut out characters couldn’t even prevent this film from being a popcorn heavyweight contender; being visually astounding and pumped with just enough adrenaline to keep you comfy. It’s unfortunate then that the film is plagued with chalky exposition and an unfulfilling Lord of The Rigs type finale. There are moments of true satirical genius; the choreography is something that stays consistent throughout the impressive fight scenes, but it always feels the same, only by tossing in a random animal or creature here and there helps distinguish what you’re looking at now and what went on not just minutes beforehand. Still, this plot-lite, sick pack heavy action flick will keep the blood thirsty satisfied - but actually blood would have worked much better than the computer generated nonsense. It’s gloriously directed in places, however the fight scenes are hampered by a little over indulgence sometimes which leads to some disappointing game-like sequences. Anyways, all in all this is an enjoyable tale devoid of any epic sensation; style over substance galore! But its rare for a film with so many flaws (I’m not eve going near the shoddy detail to historical fact or lack thereof, which is pointless considering this is based on a comic but blah it wrecked my buzz considering I’m a classic’s student!), turn out to be so damn entertaining all the same.

Silent Hill is a vacuous franchise sell out, that although manages to stay true to some of the more infamous landmarks throughout the games, unfortunately falls short of anything spectacular due a wobbly script at the best of times and some questionable acting. Still, for all of the faults, nooks and crannies, this film looks wonderfully grim! And, although a CGI-fest for the most part, there are a few stand-out scenes involving pyramid head that change the tone of the film within an instant. However not even the more enjoyable parts can prevent what was - a shoddy excuse for a climax -come across from being nothing other than humorous and completely outrages. Not even die hard fans should approve of this nonsense. Casual players should avoid!

Only in Hollywood, eh? Who would have thought that a show, which got canned only after a handful of episodes airing, would be standing tall, triumphing as a spectacular feature length movie? I certainly didn’t believe the rumours initially, but when I saw onset screen caps I was jumping for joy! Firefly was most definitely underrated and deserved a lot more credit and attention then it was rewarded. It was nothing short of amazing, and if Fox only would have given it a chance, I’d say by now it’d be a world wide phenomenon currently in season three, spoiling us with amazing storylines. But I’m afraid to say that we aren’t knee deep in season three, instead, we have an entire movie to ourselves no thanks to the Joss man!

Many were sceptical as to how Joss would universally make a movie, based on a show with a cult following, appealing to an outside audience. But the finished result shows that he can and most definitely did do it! Many friends I forced to see the film were glad as the credits rolled that I took them to see it. They immediately adapted to the smart dialogue, intriguing characters and the fast paced action.

Review: This movie opens with a brilliant five-minute prologue, which sums up perfectly everything that is essential for new viewers to understand. Then we have a beautifully one-take shot of the entire crew and what their position on ship is. Joss’ talents, as soon as the movie opens, immediately shine through the screen. From the CG city to the wonderful shots on Serenity, it was obvious how great of a director this man is! Then we are treated with some funny one-liners and everything is told, in the early stages anyway, in a light hearted tone that reels the audiences in for a comfortable ride.

The budget for this movie was hardly enormous, modest at best, and at times that is evident with some lacking CG effects. However, Joss manages to keep the CG to a minimal, focusing more on the characters and surroundings, rather than the huge towering buildings with spaceships hovering over them. But that’s not to say we don’t have our fair share of space battles. Straight off we get an energetic hovercraft chase! Visually it looked amazing. With some brilliant set pieces intertwined with action, it really gave off that big blockbuster feel.

Joss manages to stay grounded. Not going overboard with the spectacle, focusing on the likes of how the ships blow up, instead he does what Star Wars episode 1-3 should have done and kept the characters at it’s core. Given that Firefly had many main characters, it would have been difficult to squeeze them in for a two-hour movie. So sacrifices had to be made and Book and Inara are forced back somewhat. Good choice in my opinion as the others played a more pivotal role in movie.

Serenity really has everything a movie should have – Romance, Action, elements of horror, space battles, people saying ‘Aint’, and well rounded human beings. Calling this movie fluffy would be a huge mistake. Sure for the most part of 40 minutes, there are enough one-liners to make you fall off you chair. But when this movie wants to get dark it does so with such ease! Impending doom literally befalls the characters and it’s extremely gripping in its final acts. At times it can make you jump out of your seat too!

Although brilliant, Serenity is not without its faults –sure they are minor, but still they are there. Very little room is given to really sell the characters to N00bs of ‘Verse. And it’s understandable as Joss only had two hours, but some events may not pack such an emotional punch as much as it would a Firefly fan. Some characters are barely touched upon and as my friend once said to me ‘’It seemed like they only threw in that Love story with the mechanic for the sake of adding something extra,’’ to an extent I must agree with him. But I realise that it was thrown in as closure for us Firefly folk.

This is nothing short of perfection. Non ‘Verse viewers may not agree, but I put this to you ‘’Imagine having Buffy/Angel canned. And for them only to be reprised as a huge movie!’’ And that feeling that you are getting now is what we Firefly fans experienced through Serenity. I highly recommend this high-octane space/western movie! It has all of the elements a good movie should have! I would however recommend that you see the series first as the movie gives away all pivotal plot points leading up to the series finale.

There are some brilliant and well-choreographed fight scenes. Some awesome space battles and a twist that is rather disturbing as to how the reavers came about. And also I cannot forget the amazing talents of the cast, which make the movie more plausible and down to earth! Go buy this film on DVD! That’s an order!

If the first film was anything to go by it’s fair to say that some cinematic adaptations of classic television programmes can often fail miserably. Thankfully, it seems that the writers of the first Garfield movie have learned their lessons, and their second offering is considerably wittier, visually more appealing and there’s an energetic soundtrack aiding it too. However this is very much a kid’s film. There’s an array of colourful characters on display for the children, with little on offer to open it up to a more varied audience. Low and laughs and fairly straight forward, there are definitely other films within the CGI genre with far more appeal.

A scheming Raccoon called RJ (Bruce Willis) stumbles across a local community of furry critters who are petrified of leaving their forest home at what could be over the hedge. RJ after some serious persuading initiates them into a world where human’s leave left over food in bins for the animals to feast upon and he shows them how to loosen up. Visually this film is a real treat for the eyes. There’s an interesting cast lending their voices and the result is somewhat mixed. However, with a sharp script and some genuinely funny jokes here and there, ‘Over The Hedge’ is a charming little family film.

Happy Feet is a remarkable looking film, with some incredible voice talent at its core. The film is visually flawless, with some genuine thrills and spills, it will lure you into to its heart-warming story and fill you with that special song inside that’ll make you feel warm and fuzzy, as you watch the Antarctic penguin antics unfold. The storyline, as far kiddies films go, isn’t exactly straightforward. There are many subtexts within this movie dealing with religion, personal preference, individuality, politics and social rejection. Some of them work better than others with the script sometimes forcing that special message down your throats when all you really want is a fun filled few hours. Don’t get me wrong this movie will make you laugh, or almost cry with laughter, no thanks to the over zealous genius that is Robin Williams. He’s at his prime here and gives Happy Feet that extra spark. The movie overstays its welcome with a fairly long running time for any animated film, but there’s plenty here to make it all worthwhile. This possibly could be the land version of Finding Nemo!

Hell hath no wrath like a woman scorned! I think this perfectly sums up ‘My Super Ex-Girlfriend’ with regards to the plot. The title says it all really. It’s a simple enough premise that’s given the star treatment, with a host of enjoyable performances. You have the wacky, over the top Uma Thurman, who plays the looney bin of a woman that is ‘G-girl’ wonderfully. Luke Wilson also gives a capable performance, although Rain Wilson, who plays the foul mouthed friend, gets all of the best lines throughout. There are plenty of visual gags with one in particular involving a shark being so ridiculous that it’s brilliant! This is definitely one of the better romantic comedies of recent times. It may stray from its message and leak into filler occasionally, but there’s still a lot to enjoy about the film. ‘My Super Ex-Girlfriend’ is highly recommended if you and your significant other are in the mood for a Rom-Com with a twist.

Pixar are always ahead of the race when it comes to beautifully rendered CGI films filled with glorious detail and vibrant characters. ‘Cars’ is no exception – the look of this film alone creates a true sense of fun for the entire family. The range of automobiles finest are on offer, from the slick, pimped out to impress Lightning McQueen to Larry the Cable Guy or the love interest Bonnie Hunt, just to name a few. Unlike many Pixar films such as ‘The Incredibles’ or ‘Toy Story’ this movie rarely expands beyond being just a kids film. There may be a few laughs here and there aimed at an older audience but Cars main priority is keeping the kids at bay, and it most certainly will do that with fast paced races and a delightful story about friendship and family.
