Since my first try at Mortal Kombat back in the days of the SNES, I feel in love with that genre of game. The big problem with that genre tho is that it's always the same. The four basic moves (high punch, low punch, high kick, low kick - block) are still the only things you do in a fighting game.
The developpers have dumped realism for quicker and gorier action. As it may draw inexperienced and new players, this type of gameplay ain't really for veterans like me. I started doing karate at the age of 8 (soon gonna be black belt, saturday december 8th, wish me good luck!!!), influenced by those video games and Jackie Chan movies. I quickly discovered that real martial arts are way harder then what they seem when you give those super high jumped kick by clicking two buttons.
The problem is that basicly any newbie can pick up a combo list from teh net and practice them and become pretty good. Unlike in real life, no tactics are put into use when fighting, you can simply button mash and sometimes, it does the trick. The combo system might give a head start for people that have been playing games for a while, but it doesn't necessarly give you some satisfaction, at least, not for me.
When will a game opt for simulation rather then quick button mashing action?
Well i'll tell you when, soon. I'm telling you this in the open for all of you that read my blog right now, I wrotte a video game script, a fighting game that is meant to be a simulation of real fighting. Fighting isn't all about striking first, but attacking smart. Be on the lookout for Kumite!!!
I might drop more info later.
