I posted this at the home theater board as well, but I figured maybe some of the OGU crew could help me. This is pretty much a copy and paste of what I wrote there. I went to a few stores, and this is what I came up with,

"I was here a few months ago (actually, it's probably been a year by now), when I needed help with my 5.1 in my room. Now, I'll be getting an X360 soon, and this HDTV talk is getting me down. Right now, I have a 20" JVC flatscreen with composite hookups. It looks great on the Xbox and GC, but I come next week, this setup will be outdated. I'll have spent over $700 on the X360 after all is said and done, so my budget isn't that great. I'm looking for a 26"-30" tube HDTV for my room. Because of how close I am to the TV, I didn't want an LCD or Plasma, because of that 'blur' effect in fast moving games/movies. I heard that tube's don't have that problem. I also like having my center channel on top of the TV, so a flatscreen isn't that big of a must.

Right now, I'm checking out futureshop.ca and bestbuy.ca (I'm canadian). There's a 30" HDTV Toshiba I'm looking at, the guy I talked to at the store said he'd get it for me for $850. It has 1080i, 3D YC filter and progressive scan. Not too bad, exept one of the customer reviews had this,

"The only negative is that the HD component inputs only allow HD source, so if you have component DVD from your game console or DVD, it won't work on this TV."

What does that mean? Will it still work with the X360, or Xbox?

The only thing with this is, there's a 26" version availble for $599 at bestbuy. That's only four inches for $250....pretty big difference. However, I made the mistake last time of rushing into buying a tv, and I regretted only getting a 20" after all was said and done.

There's another 26" availble too, it's a Panasonic Flat Tube EDTV. It also has 1080i and 480p.

What do you guys recommend? I can't find any tv with 720p in this price range...is it much better at all compared to 1080i? Would this tv be good enough to last me atleast 3-4 years? I know 1080p is coming out soon, does that mean this tv will be out-dated by year's end? Are there any other tv's in this price range/category?

Thanks for any help/suggestions."

Thanks for any help/suggestions from you ladies aswell.

Well the best advice I can give you is to not worry about the 1080p for now, since all the TVs that support it are going to be quite pricey for a while. There is really no noticeble difference between 720p and 1080i, especially in gaming. When I watch FOXs Football Broadcasts which are in 720p on 1080i (I can switch between both) There is practically no change, and actually when I ask people they seem to prefer 1080i. As far as the TVs go, I always go for the biggest I can afford, a couple of inches don't sound like much, but when you actually have it for a while you start to wonder what it would be like had you gone bigger. Hope that helped

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. That four inches could be the difference of me putting down another grand a few years from now. Things is, 30" is quite big, and I may have to shuffle some stuff around, even though I have them in a perfect setup right now, sound wise. I'll make a pic of it.

For CRT tube TVs, Sony are easily the best. I have a Consumer Reports subscription, and the top of the lists are all occupied by Sony.

The Sony 30HRS420 is Consumer Reports' top rated 30" HDTV - you'll notice that some stores like Amazon.com have it for $699. Seems like prices have dropped because I think Sony is getting out of the CRT business entirely.

I guess that would be my recommendation for your budget. Don't go for the 26" - you'll regret it later. Get at least a 30".

My recommendation would be

SCREW YOU ALL FOR GETTING SUCH GREAT TV'S FOR SO LITTLE MONEY!

As long as you stick with CRT you should be fine. Trust me, you don't want an LCD screen if you can get a HDTV enabled CRT... And some more advice: if you should go with Philips beware that Pixel Plus 2, which sounds far superior to Pixel Plus (it's got to do with the 2 you see?) is still in it's early days, meaning there are still some toddler diseases to be ironed out.
As for Sony, I've always found that they tend to include far too few inputs to a gamer's standard. I don't know if it's the same in North America though. I'd say go with a Samsung. I was always really pleased with my old CRT Samsung untill it decided to break down a couple of months ago.

RIght now I'm focusing on either a 26" Panasonic (480p/1080i) or a Toshiba 26" (560p/1080i). The Panasonic has more inputs, though it is a $100 more. The 30" is far too big for my room. As much as I'd like to get it, the tv is at the foot of my bed, so I'm usually no further than 6' away, and sometimes as close up as 2'. I'd see all the dots and lines at that close range.

I will send you a PM with my Consumer Reports login Minda. Trust me, you'll want to go with a Sony when you see the results. Especially since they are the same prices as the Panasonic and Toshiba's you're looking at.

I don't know the exact model number right now, but we got these 26" Samsungs and they're sweet...I think they cost just a little over $1000. They caught my eye when I saw Microsoft using them for 360 demos. I figured if they were good enough for MS for use with trying to make everyone super-impressed with the 360, they'd be good enough for our shop.

EDIT: I looked it up. I'm pretty sure this is it:
http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/nabc/product/b2c_product_detail.jsp?eUser=&prod_id=LNR268WX%2fXAA

I'd highly recommend it based on my week's worth of experience with it.

In reply to GregK:

Ack! how can you support such a monstrosity? I own one of those and while they indeed look good on paper they tend to really mess up some games to the point where they just give me a headache. It's the usual LCD thing though: too much delay on the liquid crystals which gives ghosting when showing obstacles moving over a same-colored background. Go play Burnout (I have 2) on that thing and notice the ginormous smears that track the cars when you've slowed down because of a crash.
Plus, as with all LCD's they try to cover it up with slight 'blurring' which can get anoying sometimes.

Thrust me Minda, your money is better spent elsewhere.

Ohhh, take that girfriend

Yeah, I was trying to look for a Samsung (my current tv is a Samsung, no JVC by the way. Not sure why I said JVC), and I was happy with it. None of the stores had one though.
