I know I should have posted my thoughts on the finale here, but this site hates me so much. I've tried a billion times, but it won't let me. Something about wrong HTMLs but I've checked over and over again and there was nothing wrong with it.
Anyways, I saw a brilliant plot device on DeviantART and thought I would share.
Power Corrupts by QueenoftheCute
"It came from a very vague idea of how Aang could easily be turned into an effective villain if he had killed Ozai. After all, he'd be an insanely powerful individual who cares very deeply about the things he believes in, but also considers himself able to judge the worth of another human life. And that spawned the idea of an exiled Azula trying to reclaim her throne while the Gaang, in an effort to create a world-wide utopia, become more and more, well, evil.
Zuko and Katara are obviously the Avatar's right-hand men. As Fire Lord and Bloodbender, they're invaluable to his efforts."
An evil Avatar? A world gone terribly wrong. Doesn't that sound morbid and yet interesting?
I mean Zuko had no qualms with Aang killing his father; Katara could go to the dark side as we've seen in TSR; and if Aang did kill Ozai, would could possibly stop them?
I mean I see Sokka, probably saying something; maybe even Toph--but how can they go against Aang, Katara, and Zuko?
As for Mai. Well in TBR we saw that even though she didn't agree on Zuko's methods (betraying the Fire Nation) she'll follow him.
Thoughts?

I think that a plausible way for that to happen would not be for the gaang to become evil, but rather to become ruthless; to accept the argument that the ends justify the means. That is actually how most evil world dominations start out - heck, that's how the war with the Fire Nation started - Firelord Sozin's willingness to conquer the world in order to make it what he percieved as a better place.
It would be the height of irony if Azula ended up playing a critical role in bringing the evil gaang down, or somehow helping them to see the light again.
There is just one thing that I think you're going to have a hard time with though - how does Iroh fit into all this? The only explanation I can think of would be if he somehow died, and that was what spurred Zuko, as well as the others to accept the "you've got to be cruel to be kind" argument.
I'd also enjoy reading the first chapter - it sounds like a good idea.
Axrendale: Yes, I agree with the idea of hubris. They wouldn't be evil from the start, but like you said; they would start believing that the ends justify the means, to the point where they are perceived evil by the citizens of the world. I can see them dominating the world with little problem with their power. Seeing Katara's personality, I can't see her stopping Aang. Same goes with Mai. She betrayed her country for Zuko, without really understanding why it's better if the Fire Nation lost the war. She even told Zuko, how was betraying the FN better for it?
Although I don't know how Azula would really play into the role, if she's locked up in a mental health facility.
Iroh can easily be dealt with death. XD jk
But I have an idea in mind with him. He believes Zuko will do the right thing in the end, so he won't do anything drastic to him---and there is that situation where he's kinda hypocrital. I'm not trying to bash him or anything, but when it came to Azula, his beliefs of second chances didn't apply to her. I'd say Zuko would point that out---saying that he can't risk another Azula by giving them a second chance to be free. IDK.
If I do do something with this, I think it would only be drabbles or a oneshot. But I will post it, for anyone who cares for it.
I wouldn't write Azula off just because she is stuck in a mental facility. She has a habit of surprising people with what she is capable of - I think she should be able to figure out how to escape.
