Yes, I've seen the new movie, previews started in the UK last Thursday and my wife and I (and my daughter and her boyfriend who didn't really want to go) went along to see how the series would be re-imagined. I realise that they had to show how the main characters first met each other in a short space of time, and I realise that the relationships had to develop fairly quickly, all due to the limitations in time however, with McCoy as a Doctor and Kirk going through a Command programme, it is very unlikley that they would be part of the same training course.

Near the end of the movie, and indeed in various parts in between, Kirk assumes a command role on the ship. What happened to the command structure on board the ship? Do they expect us to believe that in the future, a Cadet, regardless of how impressive he may be during training, would be allowed to take command of a Starship once the Captain and the First Officer are no longer able to! Also, once a Cadet has proven himself in one command situation, that he would be promoted to full Captain, given a Starship and sent on his way with 430 souls to look after, without having gone through an apprenticeship as a junior officer and learning the ropes from a much more experienced commander.

Aside from the non canon elements of Uhura and Spock making out, Spocks mother dying, Vulcan being destroyed, which I accept can all be explained by the parallel timeline, there were some clever nods to the original series and movies; "I am, and always shall be, your friend", "I'm a Doctor, not a .......", the Vulcan mind meld, the Vulcan nerve pinch, the Kobiyashi Maru, Spocks parents, the guy in the red uniform not making it back, and Leonard Nimoy, were all there to try to bring in 'The Original Fans'.

The special effects were very impressive as should be expected, the fight scenes and action scenes were well done, in fact, Kirk was reminiscent of Jack Bauer in many scenes.

As a movie without 43 years worth of baggage I would give it 9.5 out of 10, as a movie with one of it's hands tied and trying to satisfy the original fans and bring the new 'on board' I would give it 8.5 out of 10.

By the way, the engine room was a complete mess, couldn't they have at least taken that element from Enterprise?

Hi Maverick, I loved it, saw it last night. I thought the entire cast was excellent. I actually thought that Kirk's father George looked very similar to the original Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter). I loved the all the little details that made ST special. JJ did good. Oh and btw Chris Pine who played James T. Kirk is actor Robert Pine's son!

Aside from some of the things you correctly pointed out, I also thought it was a great movie. My kids loved it so much, they are planning to see it again this week. And BTW, they are avid Star Trek fans.

Hi April, I thought that too about Jeff Hunter! I remember Robert Pine as the Sgt in CHiPs but I seem to remember that he was also in an episode of Voyager, pity he was too old to play Kirk's father.
Hi revbucky, my daughter and her boyfriend are both NOT fans of the original however, they LOVE the new movie! Looking forward to the next one!

Hi Maverick, Robert Pine not only starred on the series Star Trek Voyager but also Star Trek Enterprise as well. Chris comes from a family of actors even his grandparents! Grandma Anne Gwynne appeared in horror and sci-fi films in the 40's and 50's! She was a regular on Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe playing Sonja. His mom Gwynne Gilford starred in Beware! The Blob and Masters of the Universe also had a semi-recurring role on CHIPS.

it was good, but i hated the fact that they jerked with the mythology and changed a bunch of things around to appeal to a wider audience. they did the same thing with the X-men and Spider-man films. at the end of the day, it was good, but felt like a cheap attempt to make a ton of money rather than to make the movie feel like Star Trek.

Thanks April I see that he even has a sister Katie who is an actress. Hi Maxximus_Prime we knew that it was always going to be a compromise! By the way, welcome to the site.

I agree with the review, this is easily the best movie this year so far.

Hi blackmagechris1 I think that I even compared it to Star Trek episode Mirror, Mirror in one review, not everything is consistent with "our" Trek universe.

Hi Maverick! I have to say that I liked the movie but like you said it had a lot of baggage to over come. I'll agree wtih your 8.5 out of 10. The best part of the movie for me was when Spock and Kirk meet up with Scotty. Great Review!
