FINAL FANTASY IX

You all might be noticing a trend here. Yes, my #5-#2 top games have been RPGs. You may have expected this game to turn up somewhere. And it's a very difficult battle this game fights with my #1 favorite game of all time. It was a hard decision to make on whether to put this game as #2 or #1. But it deserves a spot in the top 5 of any gamer who has ever been privileged enough to play it.

In a turn from the other PS1-era Final Fantasies, FFIX used a more cartoony approach to their graphics. But this doesn't detract from the game at all. I always enjoyed the graphics of this game, and they really are something to behold. Environments and characters are all wonderfully detailed. Backgrounds look amazing. Even the expressions of characters can be seen.

But this game really excels in the music and story departments. The music is likely my favorite of any game. Too many unforgettable tracks. And Nobuo Uematsu used his favorite process of taking one main song from the game and creating several different music tracks from the tune of that song to give a varied but familiar feel in each area. Not to mention the main theme of the game, accompanied by the CG intro when you turn the game on, are the best ever created in my opinion.The story is deep and realistic and quite mature. Things may seem funny and light, but they can change in a heartbeat.

Then you have your cast of characters. One of the greatest casts ever created in a video game. Dagger is a great heroine. Zidane is a very likeable protagonist. Vivi is one of the great mysteries in terms of character development, but he adds so much to the franchise that he was even included in Kingdom Hearts 2! And I have a miniature Steiner on my keychain.

Everything about this game is created so flawlessly. I feel giddy every time I think about it or play it. And that is a great thing.

"You don't need a reason to help people." - Zidane I remember that line just like it was yesterday, man Final Fantasy 9 is one of my all time favorite games ever.

Definitely a good choice!

Nice! Well, yeah I saw this coming hehe. I'm not totally in love with the soundtrack yet. Well, I take that back. I think that the game has an averaged out great soundtrack. Meaning I don't think it has anything outstandingly epic or overwhelmingly emotional, but instead does everything right in all the areas. It's definately not a bad thing, it's just not my favorite...yet, at least.

wow the best game in the gaming history! well..if you ask me nya

@eternalcube - Awesomeness. Thanks bud.
@N-REAL - I like Zidane quite a bit. He's not a girly hero like Vaan or anything. And he's not a loner for the majority of the game like Squall. And you'll see about #1
@alidallal - What do you mean? Now you have no choice but to play it? Lol
@travisstaggs - Awesome line. There are some great moments in this game.
@nftw - Thanks man!
@MonkeyStew - I love the music in this AND in FFX! I thought the music was top notch through both. You'll get to some more great tracks.
@kairi - You are obviously very smart

Ah. Well that's good Thing is...I'm not too big o' fan of FFX's soundtrack. The execution of the soundtrack was perfect, but the scores themselves I think are much less, compared to some of the pieces in the older games. And how do you reply with each person right under the next one? Some reason GS likes to be gay when I reply and won't let me consecutively put one person's message under the next. It just moves them all together.

@MonkeyStew - I have no idea? I just press enter when I'm finished typing one person's message, and it goes down to the next line for the next message. I thought the scores and the execution of the scores in FFX were perfect. Suteki da Ne, that main score you were trying to think of, is great. And FFX has Assault, which is my favorite FF song of all time.

I heard this game is orgasmic.

Sounds like I need to do some FFIX hunting on eBay.

@hazelnutman - You know whenever I say your name out loud or in my head, I always say "hazel, nutman"? I mean, I should pronounce it as hazelnut, and then man, but I don't do that. I call you hazel. Not hazelnut.
And your mom is orgasmic. Not as much as this game though. Sorry if that hurts. Hehehehe

@jaykho213 - I know man! Every time I see something about it, I get this huge sense of nostalgia, like I want to play it again immediately. That was an awesome CG. The game is full of them.

I like how you described the story, at first it does seems like the game might be light hearted but it's really quite deep.

@monkeystew: are you kidding me?! The OSTs are really amazing compared to the other rpgs. Have you ever listened to "loss of me", vivi's theme, garnet's song, Terra theme, burmecia theme to name only few? I'm not a big rpg fan and played all FFs except 11. But FF9 is the most amazing one story-wise and in overall feeling even though I prefer FF8 and FF12 over it. Also, you know what? I don't feel like playing all the other FFs again, however, FF9 was only the exception and played it just recently after all these years and still has its own unforgettable charm.

My first FF and loved it. I think number 1 is obvious.
Posted Mar 24, 2009 6:38 am PT
@zathic - Thanks man. It really does do that.
@eternalcube - I agree about this game's OST. It is truly one of the best and really stands out. Gizamaluke's Grotto and Burmecia's music both really stood out for me, and they were just on the first disc. You have so many other unforgettable tracks in the game. The Black Mage Village's music is quirky and amazing too.
@_overdose - Oh, is it so obvious? Haha we'll see.

I want to see no. 1 so bad
Posted Mar 26, 2009 2:28 am PT
Yeah great game , but I prefer more the FFVII than this one
Posted Mar 26, 2009 3:15 pm PT
I've heard many great things about this game.I haven't had the chance to play it much because my copy doesn't work on my PS3 and it works on my PS2 but my PS2 won't let me save data from PS1 games onto the many PS1 memory cards I've tried using(even the official SONY brand)Anyways I hope I get to play it properly one day.
