GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con

Well I promised I'd do a blog on this ages ago and didn't actually get round to do it as that other website I now frequent has distracted me :p . However it is now time for me to do so.

Im going to talk about ga-yness in gaming (stupid GS filters)gaming something that has recently been touched on by a number of websites (most recently Kotaku I believe) due to a spate of news coverage. Gay characters and scenarios in games are slowly but surely becoming more prevelant and for the first part of this series of blogs lets look at some of the more popular characters whos sexuality is more than a little questionable..

Vamp - MGS Series

Short of the fact he looks like he's pretty much taking Raiden from behind in some of the MGS IV fight sequences, Vamp actually is bi-sexual and it isn't just innuendo. I think Vamp (along with a few other MGS character I won't mention here) is an important individual in any list of gay gaming because hes part of such a major, testosterone fuelled franchise and dosen't meet the overly effeminate cliche which in terms of male characters who probably/obviously sleep with other guys we will see this is a fairly rare occourance. Normally I would consider him being bi a bit of a cop out (again something ill touch on in another post) but as we all know, all vampires are bi. So its fine.

Juhani - KOTOR

Juhani is in my opinion the best example of a gay female character in a video game, there are better realised gay and lesbian relationships in Mass Effect and Jade Empire for sure, but as the characters in thats sexuality alters depending on the leads gender I thought Id focus on Juhani as she stays gay even if you play a guy. Juhani's sexuality is proven clear by the way she can bond with a female lead (not nessecerily a romance, but a bond none the less) and the fact that if you kill her on her home planet her female lover pursues you looking for revenge.

Hana & Rain - Fear Effect II

From a lesbian character I like to a pair who I consider fall into the "cop out" category. Yes they have a romance, yes they are pretty hot (for PS1 ****sprites anyway) and yes they do manage to develop a relationship, but I considered their creators insistance they were bi a bit of a cop out, possibly to sell more games. But still! At this time gay characters in gaming were an extreme rarity so they did bring progress..

Cho Aniki Bros - Cho Aniki

Oh dear God. The Japanese are pretty keen on their overtly gay male stereotypes in video games but these two really takes the cake. If you really want to know more im sure you can find lots of lovely videos and images online and you can join them on their search for holy sperm.

Joachim - Shadow Hearts: Covenant

Now this is a bit different, he may be a bit flamboyant and over the top but Joachim is a mildly cliched g-y guy who works well. Whether it's him crying out "No I like men!" in the Veronica torture sequence or taking part in the Man Fest to show the true power of his manhood in his side mission Joachim provides great entertainment and is a pretty cool character at the same time. The right balance? Maybe..

So there a few important bi/gay characters to set the scene.. next time ill be talking more about various companies attitudes to gay characters in their games in more depth.

Oh and before I forget..

Bridget - Guilty Gear

O.K he's not gay but he kinda accidentally gets another guy to be... its complicated. But the key thing to remember is (yes I am going to use it)

Joachim was one of the best things about SH: Covenant!

Bridget! Why do you confuse me so?!

Very nice info on some gaming characters sexualities
Posted May 6, 2009 6:21 pm PT
I haven't played any of these games so I don't know any of these characters. But that's ok because this is only a part 1 so there's more the come! Although, I probably should of played KOTOR by now.

HOLY $?@$@$ THAT LAST ONE IS A GUY?!

I've never played Guilty Gear, so I wouldn't know. That's...pretty amazing.

I agree with Kris. Bridget is a d00d?!?
Posted May 6, 2009 9:31 pm PT
Damn.. Every time i saw bridget.. It gives me the creeps. Ahh!!

Ditto Nate's and Kris's comments.

The only character I know is Joachim. Haven't come across other gay characters in gaming yet.

Cho Aniki Bros - Cho Aniki.....hahahaha

Gay for Bridget is the truth we all know and love!

I know the others you speak of in Metal Gear. Why do you think that Kojima chose to make "The other guy" gay Was it just an incidental aspect of a character's development or was he making some sort of statement? And as far as Vamp goes, it was outright said that he was Bi, and I find who he had a relationship with was very disturbing (if you played MGS2 you'll know).

I kinda knew about the other guys but, I had no realization of Juhani's lesbian affections.

And Cho Aniki is hilarious.

Is Bridget a man? If so then yes, everyone IS gay for Bridget.

@Warrior427 - It depends really.. nobody would probably ever know about the gay relationships in Jade Empire for example because unless your gay yourself or a screaming yaoi/yuri fanboy/girl you wouldn't be looking for them in the first place.

@AlmightyMax - Indeed, it is a he.

@REGAMER-X - Indeed, he rocks

@MagisterBurner - LOL

@indzman - Why thank you, theres plenty more I could do but these are more prevelent.

@Garrison-Ford - Mr.Garrison-Ford why havent you got KOTOR yet? HMM? HMMM?
Posted May 7, 2009 12:13 pm PT
@Kryu88 - Hence why everyone is gay for him

@N8A - Give in to the Bridget love!

@Jay -hehe

@Lightfellower - You probably have and havent realised =p . What about the gay dress makers in SH2? hmm?

@Azelkosmos - Lets start a cult Max!

@Semimaster - It's an interesting aspect of the series for sure, I may not be a fan of Kojima's storylines at all but I like his inclusion of differing sexualities for sure. Im not sure if hes making a statement as much as he takes into account people have varied sexualities as a fact.

@earthWormJohnUK - Indeed he is a he

Joachim is so full of win. A completely great character.

Interesting blog, Michelle!

It just seemed to me that Kojima presented Volgin as a character with a moral defect (like blowing up the world for instance) and was including his closet homosexuality as part of it, it didn't seem like he was a much of a person as he made Vamp out to be.

Bridget is a very convincing trap indeed.
Posted May 7, 2009 1:10 pm PT
I thought Juhani was a great character. And that last one sure is crazy, how could that be a guy? Great blog Michelle.
Posted May 7, 2009 4:41 pm PT
Who the hell is Bridget?!
Posted May 7, 2009 10:00 pm PT
I was wondering if I'd see Joachim in there. That torture scene with Veronica was the best. Anyway, that's an awesome topic minxy. I look forward to the next one...definitely interesting. And I agree...how is Bridget a dude? So people fall for him thinking he's a chick? He even has a girl name. ...I just looked him up on Wikipedia. Man...his parents raised him as a girl? That's kinda funny.

Ron Bridget is a character from Guilty Gear who looks like a hot chick in a small nun costume but is apparently actually a guy with delicate features. Someone in that dev group is so far in the closet they are in Narnia.

I dunno about Hana and Rain. I felt like they were a bit 'used' by the developers to sell more copies of the game. I read two reviews about the game before buying it, but I remember the reviewers being EXTREMELY excited about that scene in the elevator. Plenty of pictures and little text boxes.

Of course, being a teenager at the time, it's what largely influenced my decision to buy it.

Nice list, but allow me to add another: Venom from Guilty Gear (had a relationship with Zato-1 before he died and turned into Eddie).
Posted May 8, 2009 12:44 pm PT
Ohhh, you should put Teddie from Persona 4 in. If you've played it through you'll know why (hint, the school festival time "I'd hit that".)

Or Kanji for that matter... although I don't think he's actually gay as much as the devs might lead you to believe. He's just "different" or more in touch with feminine activities and his emotions.

Nice blog. check out that link I posted in the Temple. Makes one seriously wonder.

But for guys, if you are attracted to a guy because you thought they were a girl, is that homosexual? I dont think so. I like girls due to the feminine aspect. If I wanted masculine I would go for guys. I'm secure with my sexuality and I think it's funny people even care. Who cares what gender someone likes or doesnt!

I think it's good video games and other media are posing more and more homosexual characters and references. It makes things seem more normal open and approchable for the worlds more close minded individuals. Liking SH:Covenant and Joachim might make that biggot think different when he next sees his flamboyant neighbor.

Video games - advocoting world peace since *insert date*

Like most people, I thought Bridget was a girl at first, but I really don't care either way, he's still cute.

And does Jochaoim really shout that...? I never did have him in the torture room so I probably missed it.

LOL, funny list! Hope that there are more realistic ones though in upcoming games...
