Even in the poor economy, PBS is still making (or broadcasting) some good programs, a lot of "American Masters" and "American Experience" programs are coming up, "NOVA" is still good, and "Great Performances" seems to be offering a wider variety of topics the last few years. "Nature" has become more relevent and more genres are included in what used to be called "Masterpiece Theater".
Just this month, I've watched some good shows; "Make 'Em Laugh" - a program on the growth of comedy in the US in the last century; and "The Story of India" - a really competent overview of the entire history of a very complicated region with parallels to what is happening in India today. Another two hour special, "Cinema's Exiles: From Hitler to Hollywood" is an informative documentary of the flight of some of the 1920s and 30s best movie-makers from Germany.
So far, none are added to TV.com...I wish some staff would make the rounds and punch 'em in (apparently CBS has signed some agreements for internet re-broadcast with PBS). As it is now, it can be tedious to submit them and wait. But then again, lots of good PBS series have never been added here ("Liberty! The Story of the American Revolution", "Vietnam: A Television History", "Lewis and Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery", etc. etc.). On the other hand, we do have the internet broadcasts of "Novel Adventures".

I've submitted quite a few Discovery Channel, Science Channel and National Geographic Channel shows to the database over the last 2 years. Sooner or later they get added. Most of those shows only have a few episodes so it's impossible for anyone to be editor, which is fine with me. Maybe you should be the self-appointed point man for PBS shows on TV.com. You seem to follow PBS the closest among the regulars on the site.
By the way, I walk past the PBS headquarters several times a week when I go to the gym to swim and work out.

Love PBS. I have been a "paid" member in the past and got the famous "tote bag" for my loyality!
I especially love "NOVA" and the great documentary series like Vietnam: A Television History. I think it's were I also saw the great docSeries, "The 10,000 Day War".
Maybe CBS would do a remake of "My Mother the Car" all tied in with Saturn or one of the other critically ill car companies?
Brrrrr! Shiver!

Hi Mac-Ale, TV sure has such diversity now, a little something for everyone. I got my husband and sons hooked on Man vs. Wild and they don't miss an episode of it. I figured that sometimes slowly showing them something different and interesting my catch their fancy. I unfortunately watch all the History/War programs and can't seem to get them hooked quite yet. Lifetime offers some fantastic programming as well, I'm looking forward to seeing Signorney Weaver in "Prayers for Bobby".

I think the only time these documentaries get added by TV.com staff is when they get some advertising dollars. "Pioneers of Television" advertised on the CNET pages. Otherwise, it's up to users.

Love Masterpiece Theatre - Last year we watched the Jane Austen series (husband initially protested but eventually succumbed) and we caught the two segments of Tess of the D'Urbervilles so I don't know if they'll be broadcasting more Thomas Hardy.

I watch stand alones on "Masterpiece Theater", it seems that now they are packaging the series as "Masterpiece Mysteries", "Masterpiece Classics" etc. - depending on the subject matter.

My, aren't you the eclectic one.
Those sound interesting, but I only watch PBS when something really catches my interest. Unfortunately, I have to hear or read about it first, so I often miss good things on PBS. I have a feeling my local station doesn't carry everything. Yeah, I'll go with that.

I'm always reading press releases or the coming year's upcoming programs on thecurrent.org for adding things here anyways. I thought you said that you had submitted "Make 'Em Laugh", I think.

Other than that, the only current shows I watch are competitions ("Hell's Kitchen", "Kitchen Nightmares", some "American Idol", etc.), "Cold Case", and "Smallville" (even though I've never liked "Smallville" much).

How ironic that your blog should be about "good" TV, since I'm presently saturating (poisoning) my system with really "bad" TV: True Beauty, Say Yes to the Dress, The Doctors, Toddlers and Tiaras, 17 Kids and Counting, LA Ink, Split Ends... Need I go on? Yeah, at the first of the year, I decided to eat healthier in 2009. To compensate, I've made this crap my new "junk food." Go figure.

I suppose its only really bad TV when you personally feel guilty about watching it.

Yes, I submitted Make 'Em Laugh and it's up now.

I decided to just watch the series, so I took no notes on all the appearances, quotes, or the crew. I hope someone adds that stuff.

I really like The Story of India series. Too bad it's not here. So many other good PBS shows are missing from this site: P.O.V., African American Lives, the e2 series, America at a Crossroads, Wide Angle, Bill Moyers on Faith and Reason, Hometime ... I can't say that I'm surprised though. The PBS shows that are here, get very little if any attention. I honestly can't remember the last time anyone made a submission to any of the PBS guides I edit. It's been many months. Even the votes come in at maybe 2 per episode for a relatively high ranking show like NOVA.
