Well, I started Dragon Age and I think I finally settled on a character. Whenever I start a new RPG, especially one in which I plan on spending many game hours, I test out several starter characters. Get a feel for the different character c1asses as well as the game. I give my starter characters personalities and I try to play the game as that character. So, after six starts to the game, I settled on a human warrior. She is a daddy's girl with strong religious feelings. So, off to battle the demon spawn!

I will come back and replay the game at least two more times. I have to see the story as both a dwarf and an elf. I expect to spend many hours in Ferelden.

I'll probably end up playing through the origin stories of each of the characters before I decide.

I usually start a character. Play for 20 hours. Realise they're not for me, and have to start again.
Posted Nov 7, 2009 6:43 pm PT
Have fun - it sounds like a great game

@AlmightyMax
That is probably the best way to do it for this game. I really am impressed with the start of the game!

@Foolz3h
I think you might want to play this through a couple of times.

well have fun with it. im an elvish witch and i love my character. at first i was kinda skeptical but once i learnt more powerful spells. ive been kicking booty non stop yeah!
Posted Nov 7, 2009 7:05 pm PT
I really should experiment more, I tend to look for a character type that fits my usual play style, which usually means a strong attack, defense through armor, not much magic (all I ever need is a healing power and one or two magic attacks). Have fun! Post a photo of your character if you can, I like seeing how other gamers make their characters look.

@iowastate
Thanks, it is great!

@MissMorphine
Booty kicking to so much fun!

@polsci1503
I tend to start with the hack and slash and work my way up to magic. I will see if I can figure out how to post my character.

I want Dragon Age...
Posted Nov 7, 2009 7:47 pm PT
Sometimes I think it is a shame that I have never been able to get into RPG's. I've tried many, and the longest I have ever lasted is abut 30 minutes. They just don't appeal to me. I sincerely hope you enjoy your game.

@JustPlainLucas
Get it when you can - you won't be disappointed.

@kellymae
I understand. No matter how many times I try, I can't get into platformers.
Posted Nov 7, 2009 8:15 pm PT
Sounds good. (adds another game to the huge 'want to play' list).
Posted Nov 7, 2009 9:49 pm PT
I'm stuck in the dark for another 9 days...
Posted Nov 8, 2009 12:19 am PT
It's a shame the graphics isn't very good. If I have more powerful laptop I would buy it and use character creator kits to create hot babes already.
Posted Nov 8, 2009 12:51 am PT
Looks pretty good, I may have to try it sometime. Though, I'm already loaded with RPGs I need to play, in fact, so badly, it's depressing. xD
Posted Nov 8, 2009 1:49 am PT
I tend to start with a thief of some sort for fantasy games. This works really well in Elder Scrolls games but not so well in Interplay games which seem to value magic and swords to a greater degree.
Posted Nov 8, 2009 2:20 am PT
Enjoy! I'm loving this game so far.
Posted Nov 8, 2009 2:59 am PT
Wow. Now, you might be worse than my wife when it comes to that sort of thing. I'm more apt to just role the dice, so to speak, and go with whatever my first character choice is. Of course, it is a Bioware game, so I'm sure your thoroughness will pay off for you.
Posted Nov 8, 2009 5:49 am PT
I started the game yesterday. Our human warriors should hook up
Posted Nov 8, 2009 5:57 am PT
@bacchus2
Hopefully, it will be at the top of that list!

@Kloud_450
Oh, that sounds awful. What happened?

@Kleeyook
Since I have kept almost every game I have ever owned and still play them, graphics aren't that important to me. So I am just enjoying the story.

@aryoshi
And good RPGs take quite a long time to play.

@grigjd3
Some of my favorite characters have been thieves and rouges, especially in Neverwinter Nights.

@EarthThatWas
Usually the beginning of an RPG is slow but the start of this game is amazing. So I am expecting great things here.

@GeekyDad
Oh, I have a whole system on creating characters where I flesh out the back story and everything. If I will be playing the character for a long period of time, it has to be right!

@johnsteed7
We should set up a rendezvous point once she has avenged her father's death.

I wound up getting this for my PC but it won't run /cry Guess I gotta fork over money for a video card.
Posted Nov 8, 2009 11:06 am PT
@kfjl
My computer wasn't up for the challenge either so I had to get the 360 version.
Posted Nov 8, 2009 12:14 pm PT
I usually go like Foolz3h, except for 20 minutes .
Posted Nov 8, 2009 12:47 pm PT
I usually just end up grabbing a sword, lots of armor, and a guy that will whack the heck out of the baddies.
Posted Nov 8, 2009 3:21 pm PT
@korino55
It can take 20 minutes just to create the character, so you won't have lost much but starting over.

@mprezzy
Nothing beats a good sword and armor!
Posted Nov 8, 2009 3:39 pm PT
Dragon Age certainly looks like a very good game, I'll definitely be picking up a copy. Anyways, enjoy the game.
Posted Nov 8, 2009 7:20 pm PT
You know....I've never tried doing that when starting a game. My next RPG...(which might be Dragon age) I think I'll do that too! Let us know how it goes!
Posted Nov 8, 2009 8:07 pm PT
I really want that game. Hope you have fun with it.
Posted Nov 9, 2009 3:35 am PT
@david_lck
The graphics aren't mind-blowing but the gameplay is fantastic.

@Cujo31
Doing it that way makes me care about the character more and the events happening to the character much more meaningful.

@MistressMinako
I am having fun. You should get it if you enjoy RPGs.
Posted Nov 9, 2009 6:33 am PT
lol I started this myself... but not 6 times! haha.. I started with Humar Warrior as well... I plan on going back later and trying the others
Posted Nov 9, 2009 6:56 am PT
@theslimdavylp
I guess it is not the usual method of starting an RPG but it works for me. I hope you are enjoying the game as much as I am.
Posted Nov 9, 2009 6:59 am PT
That's my plan as well. Play all six origins and decide what to play the rest of the game as based on which I liked best. I tend not to replay games, so I want to make sure I play with the "best" character for my tastes.
Posted Nov 9, 2009 7:21 am PT
@PixelHunter
You might play this one more than once. A couple of the origin stories are very compelling.
Posted Nov 9, 2009 8:09 am PT
Dragon Age sounds like the kind of RPG I love. I have to get it soon!
Posted Nov 9, 2009 9:18 am PT
Argh, I want this game so badly it hurts!
Posted Nov 9, 2009 10:47 am PT
Oh heh, I meant I can't buy it til then.
Posted Nov 9, 2009 3:00 pm PT
Oh so I see you made the leap! I'm glad. I'm the same way when it comes to customizing my characters. Never happy until they're just as I envision them. I didn't buy it yet because I still have Fallout 3 here to get into but please let me know what you think. I want this game and would love some perspective on it.
Posted Nov 9, 2009 6:28 pm PT
@MsJoannaDark
You won't regret it!

@horseyjesse
When you get it, plan on spending hours exploring Ferelden.

@Kloud_450
I misunderstood.

@BigGhost_AJT
I haven't been so immersed in a game in a long, long time. As much as I enjoyed Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Mass Effect, this one is so much more. You get involved with the characters early on, and the story is engaging. Can you tell that I am loving this game?
Posted Nov 9, 2009 6:51 pm PT
Joanne I can't tell you how it does my heart good to hear that. For me the #1 selling point of a game (particularly the RPG) is the immersion factor. That Dragon Age truly involves you in the history of its world as well as its characters is really encouraging. Bioshock was the last time I got truly lost in a game. And before that I can't tell you when.
Posted Nov 9, 2009 6:56 pm PT
@BigGhost_AJT
Then you need to get this game! I think you will like it better than Bioshock.
Posted Nov 10, 2009 6:28 am PT
I'm playing DA:O... it... owns me. I am its minion. heh, really, that game is SO good! I ended up with a human male rogue, a Dhalish warrior, and an elven mage. So far I've played 3 origins, but I'm off and away with my human rogue. I LOVE backstabbing so much in this game it should be a crime. Which I guess it is. lol. I've played enough D&D in my life so that when I play DA:O I just feel as though I'm in the best campaign I've ever played.
Posted Nov 18, 2009 1:47 pm PT
@Frame_Dragger
Dragon Age: Origins is one of the best RPGs I have ever played! Bioware did an excellent job. The story drags you in and you can't escape. I think I am enjoying my dwarf rogue better than my human warrior.
Posted Nov 18, 2009 9:17 pm PT
@MJoanne: It really is amazing, I agree. The one origin I haven't done is a Dwarf... I figure I'll make a Dwarven warrior... after my elven mage... once I finish with my human rogue. You're right, this game sucks you in, and the story is the key. By the way, how much do you love the Camp dialogue when you talk to your war-dog? I especially love the exchanges between "Dog" (I named him Baldur, for the game, and the beloved Norse god of myth) and Sten. You wouldn't think humor could live in that world, but there it is!
Posted Nov 20, 2009 2:56 am PT
@Frame_Dragger
The writing is fantastic. I think this game can be an example of how video games should be considered as seriously as books or movies. The only thing I don't like about this game is the fact that real life has been interfering quite a bit lately. I wish I could take some time off so I could devote more time to it.
