You guys are so awesome.

Firstly, I want everyone to know that the only reason I want to lose weight is for myself. No one's ever harassed me about my weight (except when I was younger, I was always harassed for being underweight and told to gain weight). Now, I know I don't have a lot of weight to lose - I honestly only want to drop about 15lbs. I'm not going to go under a healthy weight for someone my height or dip into an unhealthy BMI.

For some background into why I'm doing this:

Several years ago (right before I got into gaming hardcore) I was in karate and competing on national and international stages (see a pattern anyone?) I was doing hour and a half work outs every night along with an intense 3 hour "advanced" class two nights a week. I was ripped and loved it. Britney's abs had NOTHING on mine. When I was competing in Canada in January I went to throw a head kick to my opponent and dropped like a sack of potatoes with a stabbing pain in my side - I'd torn my groin muscle. Once this happened, I wasn't able to do ANYTHING athletic (including surfing - that nearly killed me), I tried to go back to karate before the doc cleared me 3 times and every time I managed to re-injure myself and make my healing process that much longer. Finally I discovered competative gaming and threw my energy into that so I could actually let my abs heal.

3 years later and my discovery of how much I like beer, I've added 15 lbs onto my karate weight and gotten INCREDIBLY out of shape. While I know that I wont get back to my karate weight doing just wii fit, I think this can be a great catalyst to get me back into working out and back into a dojo practicing again.

I'll do weekly updates from here on out on my wii fit.

My goal weight is 125lbs. I'm 5'7" so this is not an unhealthy or unrealistic goal.

As of last night my weight via Wii Fit was 139lbs.

Here we go! o.O

Good luck...my suggestion is just involve more regular exercise rather than trying to just diet. In fact, I would suggest not dieting and just working out, you'll feel a lot better and still not have to sacrifice the things you enjoyed in the past. (It worked for me, lost more than 45 pounds about 3 years ago, and haven't looked back).

I've been altering my diet for the past month - already eating healthier. I've never been big on "dieting" though. I just make sure I eat healthy, well rounded meals, with lots of color on my plate. And not as many mashed potatoes

Good to hear that you are going to share your "diet" with us.Good luck. Will you keep us updated Kristin?
Posted Sep 9, 2008 11:29 am PT
I agree that dieting is a rather silly business... for people will spend weeks hardly eating anything so they lose weight. Then once they reach their weight they go back to eating normally and SOMEHOW the weight comes back... It is better to try and lose weight via exercise and what not for that way you still have SOMETHING to look forward to...
Anywho... Good luck on achieving your goal

Good luck! As long as you keep your mind on it, you will do it no problem!

good luck on 125!
Posted Sep 9, 2008 12:16 pm PT
good luck, hope you reach your target
Posted Sep 9, 2008 12:28 pm PT
125lbs, I miss you so much!
Posted Sep 9, 2008 12:45 pm PT
Good luck! I know you can do it. I bet you will do it faster than you think. Just don't over do it like I did yesterday. I now have a pulled muscle in my back thanks to 350 on the squat bar....../

Just know that you are one sexy chick! You and Jody make the frag Dolls look like toothless crackwhores.....
Posted Sep 9, 2008 1:46 pm PT
tiggerboy has a good point, frag dolls got nothing on you and Jody

Anyway, good luck with the goal! I can attest to the fact that beer is absolutely the worst possible thing for your figure. I personally have an extra 20lbs because of beer. I'm working on losing that too, just not publicly.

Easiest thing to do is to eat smaller portions, a few more times a day, and drink lots of water. Your metabolism speeds up if you eat smaller meals more times a day, instead of larger meals a smaller number of times a day. It has to do with insulin and blood sugar, I don't know all the details, but yea, it works.

Don't forget, we are here to kick you if you stop working out
Posted Sep 9, 2008 2:13 pm PT
Good luck If you want faster results try to make a plan counting how much calories you eat and how much you have to lose per day (cardio is the key). Don't eat much carbs

I'm so sorry about the torn muscle. I have a friend who managed to tear up his hand with a knife by accident while cooking on the day of one of his black belt tests. He had to do it anyway, because they don't come often.
Full steam ahead with Wii Fit! We're here for you!

Good luck Kristin, I'm sure you won't have any problem dropping 15 lbs, especially with an athletic history. They say your muscles have memory, and I believe that.

Good luck in attaining your goal Kristin!

Good luck to you! i'm sure you can do it! karate? dont want to meet you in a dark alley, lol.

I can actually relate. I use to do martial arts and was in great shape until I injured my ankle. It caused me to be on crutches for quite awhile and I got softer as a result.
I have only recently started working out again and I am determined to gain back my strength and stamina.

Good Luck Kristin, as long as your doing it for your own reason its all good. Nice to see someone getting some use out of their wii fit

Woo! Good luck with that.

Awww. That is so sweet. I'm sure you will do very well with it.

Ippon missy, same here, I did Karate too, Shotokan Karate. I competed at a local level at a 1st Dan ranking and was quite good, I knew all my Kata's inside out and good throw a mean roundhouse or two, then I got bored and stopped and put on weight in the following years. I'm far from fat now but I know I lack the level of fitness I once had and I kind of miss that. In all honesty, forget Wii Fit! ( I have it too), if you feel like you need it to spur you into action then something is wrong, your lacking the drive you once may of had. If I were you I would get a full length punch bag suspended in a room and kick seven shades out of it often. Trust me when I say the workout you have from doing that is immense and after a while you will get that old spark to do more.

suddenly something pops up into mind... from my knowledge Wii Fit goes by BMI or something like that... but also... You may lose a lot of weight (threw fat) BUT you may GAIN weight as well... via muslce which is much denser... SOOOO If it looks like you are gaining weight... it might be because of muscle... BUT is wii fit THAT good?
Posted Sep 11, 2008 12:16 pm PT
If you drink soda, just cutting that out before bed helps tremendously. Well, that and cutting back on beer and munchies. I'm in the process of getting cut as well. Just bought an elliptical machine and 2 person weight bench set. (hate adjusting everything!) I too was in martial arts and know the feeling of getting out of the groove. (First degree black belt in Taekwondo). Would have made 2nd degree, but my master moved the club!

@Mozillo Yes Wii Fit goes by BMI, but your BMI is relative to your fat-to-muscle ratio. And muscle does weigh more than fat so usually what happens is a person notices a drop in weight, than a slight increase in weight. You wont drop 20lbs then suddenly gain 20lbs of muscle, it's more a of a slow occurrence. And while you're gaining that muscle you'll notice more definition and be happier with the results. I tend to tone up, I don't gain a whole lot of muscle. @bukkookkub I wish it were as easy for me as cutting out soda or something else. I've always eaten pretty healthy and never really got into coffee, soda, or anything like that. The only thing I really like to drink besides water is milk. I don't flavor my water or anything like that either, just drink the straight no calorie, no sugar water. (probably why I've been lucky to only have gained 15lbs from my fighting weight in 3 years) The biggest thing that I have to cut out is starches - I LOVE THEM. And beer. But I've gotten better about that. Traded beer for a glass of red wine. @linkyshinks - it's not so much that I lack the motivation, I'm using the Wii Fit to get used to working out again and putting myself on a regiment before I drop a bunch of money on a gym membership that's just going to sit there. (plus I also wanted the balance board for the new raving rabbids game) I also don't have the room to put up a heavy bag. Also being a girl, I work out very differently from a guy - doing heavy bag workouts aren't as useful to me as to a guy, aerobics do a lot more as well as strength training. Remember - bulking up isn't something girls bodies do naturally.

wow... it would appear EVERYONE has done some form of martial arts... EVEN ME... but everyone would seem to have gotten to black belt or something like that... whilst i only got top orange in Judo... I blame me being too scrawny and stick like so I had to go against people more than twice my weight AND my studies for me leavning... and I have (thankfully) gained some weight... and some height... so I am still stick thin... yay... anywho... Who drinks soda before going to bed... I can understand something like milk... or something like that... but soda....

Wow, you were a karate master!? That's amazing. I assume you are a black belt?
Posted Sep 11, 2008 9:41 pm PT
Totally Awesome Kristin Good luck and thank you. Your inspiration to achieve has driven others to push harder towards fulfilling their own goals.

Good luck with the weightloss thing. Giving up beer can be way helpful. If you still feel the need to drink, then shots would be the way to go. One pint of beer takes a 3km walk to get rid of so, yeah.

Also, try to eat some fatty foods, otherwise your breasts can shrink. True story.

You used to surf?! I've always wanted to do that. Good luck!!
Posted Sep 15, 2008 5:36 pm PT

Ok I see where your coming from. Wii Fit is a great introductory tool for better fitness and you are wise to be doing something like that before joining a Gym. I know this only too well having wasted a load of money on my Gym sub over the years, like so many people. Here in the UK Gyms make 31% of their profits from non attending members!::: What was your ranking before you left, and which form of Karate was it?. Also, I must ask this lol, were you also prompted to take up Karate because of the film The Karate Kid?. I know every fricking line in that film, Ralph Machio was sooo cool in my eyes back then lol.

From my experience, the number one rule of weight control is ... if you eat it, you've got to use it. Eating carbs, starches, whatever, is perfectly fine, just as long as you try and use up the energy it gives you. It's all about balancing energy consumption and use. Most people, unfortunately, abuse the balance, and then they wonder why their weight is unhealthy. *rolls eyes*

I'm not much of a gym goer. I think that sport is much more fun than a gym workout. Try joining a local team. You get regular exercise, and get to meet some great people as well. Personally, I play squash, which is great not only because of the intense exercise, but also because it's indoor, so you can play it any time of the day, in any weather.
