Okay. So I'm not usually one to b*tch and complain, but I've got to share my two-cents about this. It's time to talk about the Wii.

Right off the bat, I want to share that I am a HUGE Nintendo fan. Don't believe me, just check out my collection. But I am hugely concerned for the Wii. Initial success is always a plus, but I'm really worried that the Wii's long term success is going to die off... and fast. I know Nintendo is really enjoying their mega-profits, but I strongly feel that all of this innovative spending is going to eventually bite them in the butt.

Now, my concerns. I kind of wanted to just list them off, so I can make it easily visible what I'm concerned with. So here we go;

1) When the PS2 finally falls in the dust, the Wii is going to be left competing graphically with the PSP. This means that a lot of the 3rd party games that aren't exclusive are going to be Wii/PSP releases (like now we have Wii/PS2/PSP releases on third party; i.e. Manhunt 2). 3rd party games on the Wii will have a lot of trouble being made to their fullest potential because surely developers will want to make more money by releasing on more than one console, and to save money, they'll keep the graphics the same so they don't have to make 2 separate games for the systems.

2) How much further can we go with the Wii remote controlling? Party games are just getting WAY too repetitive, and the controls just aren't getting used to their fullest potential, except by Nintendo's own development. We've only seen exceptional control use on games like Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Super Paper Mario and fair use on most others. Bringing new pieces to the controls will only last for so long (Zapper, Wii Board, etc), and I'm worried that developers will eventually see a failure in what they can do with what they have... except for Nintendo itself.

3) In this day and age, online is THE way to go. I think we can agree with this to some degree, but Nintendo seems to be holding off on its online capabilities. Games like BWii, which seems to have an awesome online co-op, still sound extremely difficult to communicate with without a headset (or at least some means of quick communication). With Nintendo not caring to add a headset any time soon, the possibility of online communication is poor. If they don't have a headset by the time Animal Crossing on the Wii comes out, there will be a lot more unhappy campers out there. That and also the online connectivity. There are many nights I surf on the net with my Wii and the loading is extremely fast one minute and then REALLY long the next (checked my service, and it's definitely not me). I feel that Nintendo needs to make it's own Ethernet connection, so that the system will constantly be on quick speed (especially for prep on online games like SSBB).

4) This is my last concern, and I think it's the biggest one. I'm just honestly not looking forward to THAT many games. I mean, I only have Umbrella Chronicles and Galaxy before the new year, and Smash Bros and Mario Kart Wii for next year (so far). Four games. Three of which are Nintendo branded. I just haven't spent much time playing my Wii since I beat Prime 3. I think the only time I've played this past month was to show someone Wii Sports, and even then, we only played for 15 minutes. I honestly use my Wii more for weather and news than I do for gaming, and I think that's because of the lack of delivery. Smash Bros was supposed to be a launch game, and yet, we are still waiting for it. There's not a whole lot of 3rd party games that seem to captivate my attention (outside of No More Heroes). I'm not as excited as I once was for Galaxy. And Smash Bros is just irritating me now. King Dedede? Do we really need to wait an extra 2 1/2 months to add characters like that? Give me a break.

I know it sounds very negative, but I'm not trying to be a Debby-Downer. I am just genuinely concerned for the long term future of the product. I just really hope that they don't get left in the dust by the other two major consoles just because they were being innovative and XBox 360 and PS3 just deliver the goods. I guess time will tell.

They're not delaying SSBB to add extra characters, they're delaying it to make it good. Revealing characters only adds to the anticipation.

And I guess I get the advantage of being a late purchaser (I'm gonna get a Wii after Christmas) and I'll have a lot of games to buy and play on my Wii when I get it.

Remember that sales-wise the Nintendo GameCube was last-gen's "loser" despite having most of the best games (as Nintendo always does). We can attribute the success of Nintendo almost exclusively to the genius of Shigeru Myamoto so the lack of 3rd party games is a relatively small concern as Nintendo is more than capable of being a self-sufficient developer.

I really don't see where you're concern is coming from, even if Nintendo ends up last they'll survive and keep giving us the goods in their next system. If we need to worry about anyone it's Sony, when people stop buying PS2's they'll be in a bad way (good riddance I'd say, if they go then maybe the few good game developers on their payroll will put their awesomeness on a system I'm actually gonna buy).

I think Nintendo owns a good solid chunk of the action. The N64 and the GB were far more common items on the entertainment shelves of curious pleasure seekers than the PS or PCs. They are catering to less fanatical players and offer a large non threatening catalogue. Any system that has persuaded my 78 year old mother along with practically all of my chipper family that gaming is not just for maniac addicts is a boon for me.
