Awarding No More Heroes with Wii Game of the Year would send a message to publishers and developers:

Don't bother fine tuning a game to be all that it can be. Don't waste your time making every aspect of the game fun. Don't worry about tweaking the technical aspects to make it run smoothly. Just come up with an original, clever idea and not only will we buy it, we'll give it awards.

I love the style of No More Heroes. I love the over-the-top craziness of the combat system. I love the idea of having ten unique bosses with their own personalities.

Everything else is terrible.

The city is a complete waste of time. If the game had no roamable city but kept all the other gameplay elements intact, it would be a much stronger title. I feel like half the time I spend playing the game is wasted because of the pointless driving to and from places in the city. The funnest part is driving over trees and lightpoles with the bike, and that's sad.

The jobs are boring and tedious. I don't mind the idea of having jobs, but none of them are very fun. I understand that perhaps the point is that doing a real job isn't fun, so it shouldn't be fun in a game either, but seriously.... Why play a game if it's not fun?

The missions are all pretty much the same. Kill a bunch of guys in a relatively small area within a time limit. This would be okay for two or three of the mission types, but not all of them.

The bosses' personalities aren't developed well enough. The whole process of getting to the boss should reveal something about the boss, yet all we get is a series of tunnels and generic enemies for nearly every boss mission. Thought and creativity was put into the boss characters themselves, and that should be developed much more than it is.

These aspects can be ignored to enjoy the game, so I've heard, but they can't be ignored when deciding whether it deserves an award. I'd give it the Most Wasted Potential Award and send the message that we appreciate good ideas but only when they're executed well.

I actually have high hopes for No More Heroes 2. The foundation is already set, and perhaps the potential can be reached with more time to work on the details. My guess is that the first game was rushed out by the publisher, because there are so many aspects of it that seem incomplete, especially the city and boss missions.

Maybe NMH2 can win best Wii Game of 2009, but it would send a dangerous message if NMH were to win in 2008.

I just think it's outright ridiculous that Brawl isn't nominated. I don't want to sound like an obsessed fanboy or anything, but the game DID get a 9.5 from GameSpot, NMH and several of those other games got 9's. Good points there, I haven't played the game myself but I can see how it would send a bad message. Then again, it's just your opinion, I can't really know what the game is like though so i won't say anymore.

Brawl should be for sure, unreal

There's no excuse for Brawl not not to win. It was the highest rated Wii game for starters but that's not the half of it.

Btw, what would be your Wii Goty JordanElek?

It's better than sending the opposite message, if you ask me.

e.g. a polished game with a tired idea.

I mean no offense by this, but were you drunk/overly tired when you wrote this?

Nope. Were you drunk/overly tired when you read it?

Personally I believe no game should win an award unless they can appeal to the gamer for some reason. NMH only has one thing going for it. It is a 'M' game on the Wii. As you pointed out the levels, missions, bosses, jobs, pretty much the whole stinking game is nothing to write home about. Games that win awards should require something of that nature or no award should be given at all.

Good points, i agreed before i even read it... No more heroes was alright, but there are much better titles out there...

To be honest... originality and creativity SHOULD be awarded. And I'll tell you why. It can mean a really fun game, so fun in fact that you can easily forgive the rough edges. Shadow of the Colossus got my GOTY for 2005, and that definately had its share of rough edges. Giving a GOTY award to a fine tuned sequel sends a much more dangerous message to developers if you ask me. "We only give out awards to sequels", which means why bother creating anything new anymore...

Brawl should've made it on there. WTF was GS thinking?

For the record, World of Goo would be my choice for the best game that I played on the Wii all year. If it were limited to Wii-exclusives, my choice would be Mario Kart. I should probably point out that I haven't played De Blob (Gabu ).

Lucas, I agree with you to a certain extent, but I fully agreed with Galaxy's award of overall GotY last year, even though it was a sequel. It didn't really do anything completely new, but it took some of the best parts of both the 2D and 3D Mario games and implemented them very well, while still keeping it accessible to newer gamers and fun for experienced gamers. It was definitely a huge feat.

A game like Brawl, however, would fit the bill of "fine tuned sequel" that you mentioned. It wouldn't be so bad if it were the second Smash Bros., but this is the third one. While it's still fun and not much SHOULD be changed, it would be hard to give it best game of the year over games that do new things. Although I do think that a fine tuned sequel to No More Heroes could be worthy of GotY next year, if the potential is fully realized, because there's so much to improve on.

I've never played NMH so I don't have a clue about it.

I didn't play NMH, but you've made your point Jordan. Brawl should win it though, even though its pretty stupid that it was nominated. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Brawl the only wii game this year that got a 9.5, overhyped, and sold like hotcakes?

I meant wasn't nominated, sorry
Posted Dec 22, 2008 1:57 pm PT
it ranks up there as one of the better titles for the wii

I agree with every point you made. My 2008 Wii GOTY is Mega Man 9.

Even though I still have yet to play NMH, I agree with your idea - if a game is not polished and is still buggy and it gets many prestigous(sp?) awards and honors, what will other devs do when they see they can make loads of cash AND get GOTY with a halfway decent effort.

And I agree with World of Goo being WII'S GOTY, but I just don't think Nintendo's in the running because of all of the games on other consoles. But World of Goo is awesome.
