My laptop somehow got a Trojan last night that is affecting the userinit.exe file, meaning my internet will now no longer work, and my laptop will not boot from CD for some reason so I cannot repair the file! Anyone got any ideas??

I have ran about 5 virus scans, finds 4 things, it fixes them but the problem still remains, Malware Bytes which usually helps a great deal comes up with nothing, and Trojan Remover tells me what I already know about the userinit.exe file, and says it can't fix the file and i need to do it manually, so I have even replaced the userinit.exe file with a working one from this laptop (My girlfriends) but the problem still remains! Grrrrrrr!!!

Help please anyone, I have fixed many a PC before from hardware to software, and even build them in my spare time as a hobby, so I know my way around the inside and out of a computer but this has stumped me, what's puzzling me is why i cannot boot from CD!

Any help would be great! Thanks

What virus product are you using? Trend Micro? If you can save the files you want you may just have to wipe the computer, reformat, and reload everything on. Yeah I know, pretty basic... I always do this as a last resort. Sometimes I'll get a replacement SATA drive and load the OS on it and then take the old drive put it in a BlacX type USB data drive box and move over what I want without that file on it. I have to admit I have never got a Trojan file I couldn't eventually get off the machine. It is difficult remotely to figure out though! Just out of curiosity do you know how it got on the machine in the first place? Jeffery

Not that it's important, but did you notice this is your 100th blog?

As far as I'm aware, to successfully combat a Trojan you need a really, really big wooden horse, a contigent of Greeks, and a little patience ...

Can you boot into "Safe mode" as admin and remove the offending file(s) that way?

Another thought is if you are using a Microsoft OS you can go into the Control Panel and turn off the tool that resets your settings when you reboot the computer. If you are removing the offending file and then rebooting the computer without that tool turned off you will restore the file back to the system each time.

Hey, I have no idea how it got on my machine as I have always had a constantly updated AVG pro running aswell as Malware Bytes stopping spyware and a firewall, so it puzzles me how I got it in the first place! I have tried replacing the file, but have not tried doing it in safe mode yet! Jeffery, how do I turn off the tool that resets my settings? never came across this option before? Thanks, Oh and 100TH BLOG!! Never noticed! quite momentous!

I'll be honest with you. I usually deal with larger systems like data centers, and racks of switches and routers so the standard OS throws me a little. So I called my brother and will PM you with the answers.
