So, yeah, wow. Rock Band. While I've certainly seen it before and had a handful of chances to play it, there's nothing quite like getting it home and being able to put it through its paces without the watchful eyes of your peers or game company representatives making sure you aren't sucking at it.

As planned, I've been sticking to the drums, starting on easy, and working my way through. Don't forget to calibrate your set. While I play Guitar Hero with no offset on my LCD screen, Rock Band seems to think I'm about 30 milliseconds ahead or behind, I can't really tell which. Either way, after calibrating, my 90% finishes started going up to 96 or 98%.

It's tough to play drums because I'm used to using the drums to keep time. But now I'm keeping time, and that's weird. While I've thumped out beats on a drum machine before, sticks anda foot pedal are way, way different. I think I understand why so many drummers can't seem to get through a song without speeding up significantly over the course of a song. It's that feeling of knowing what you're supposed to hit next, but you have to restrain yourself and hit it at the right time. It's easy to get ahead of yourself, I guess. And everyone else in the band is playing to your time-keeping, so if you speed up, they speed up with you and the whole song sounds sloppy.

Rock Band doesn't do that, obviously, but it'd be pretty cool if it did. Maybe have the players speed up and slow down to your tempo, then judge how well you stayed in time, as well as how accurately you hit the right pads or something? That's probably asking a bit much, I guess.

After two hours of drumming, I now have twoblisters on my left pinky. Nintendo's always been super wary of anything that causes blisters (remember that Mario Party glove?), but Rock Band doesn't seem to care. Actually, maybe there's something deep in the manual about it, but there's no big goofy health screen or flyer in the box that says "WEAR GLOVES WHILE PLAYING, DON'T BE A FOOL." Maybe they realize that drumming in gloves is for punks.

A few more scattered things;

- The cover of Jukebox Hero is pretty good.

- The standard Xbox Live Marketplace menus are an awful way to buy downloadable tracks. They need to patch in some sort of in-game store, pronto. There are already too many things available to download for the stanard presentation to handle, and with more stuff coming every week, it's going to become impossible to deal with.

- My hardware works, though I can feel the bass pedal bend a bit when I hit it. As I get better at the game and start using the pedal more and more forcefully, I'm worried that it'll snap. But not so worried that I'll spend any time trying to strap any metal pieces to it or anything like that.

- While I like Guitar Hero III, I'm having a hard time seeing myself going back to it, partially because I like the Rock Band guitar so much. Maybe Activision will eventually cave in and patch in support for the Rock Band guitar.

- I need to start reading up on software that converts USB gamepad button presses into MIDI signals so I can wire up the drum kit to my PC and use it as a cheap set of V-Drums.

-I think I'm probably going to spend most of my Thanksgiving break behind a set of fake drums.

- Playing bass is also awesome.

- This game needs an online version of Band World Tour. I feel like I'm missing out on the game's most dynamic mode just because outside of the people I work with, none of my friends will ever be any good at any aspect of this game.

Jeff, while rock band is awesome and everything, shouldn't you be getting some sleep since we just came out of the crazy gaming avalanche of 2007? Or putting up a points report with you playing the drums!
Posted Nov 21, 2007 12:26 am PT
I'm totally with you there on pretty much all your points, and I too intend to spend most of this weekend (and probably a ton of weekends after that) pretending to be a drummer.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 12:41 am PT
I haven't had time to have a look at Rock Band yet, hopefully i will sometime in the future. But the other instrument like the drums make it look great!
Posted Nov 21, 2007 1:01 am PT
Looks like Rock Band is providing you some very interesting thoughts. Those drums do seem so very hard to play and the role of drums is too huge for my likings. In the end, the experience with the drums should be very satisfying knowing that you have helped out the band as much as possible.

I'm not sure if i'll be gettin rock band. If I do it won't be until next year. I'm plenty fine with Guitar Hero
Posted Nov 21, 2007 1:15 am PT
Man I just hate reading all this good stuff about Rock Band... I have to wait till next year, for the game to ship Europe.. ohh the pain, THE PAIN!!!
Posted Nov 21, 2007 1:18 am PT
i'd get it....but if i had 170 bucks i'd buy a psp and a bunch of wii games
looks mighty fun though
Posted Nov 21, 2007 1:20 am PT
The drums do look fun, and intimidating. Good luck on the timing, it's an issue that has broken up many a band, virtual or not.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 1:30 am PT
Thanks for the impressions, i really want this game.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 1:35 am PT
Awesome. Less awesome that it's not coming out in Canada for a month, though. And you know, the fact that all of my friends will suck at the game too, so I'll lament the loss of a full online mode. Oh well.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 1:52 am PT
What is actually happening with the online mod?
Posted Nov 21, 2007 2:04 am PT
Looks good, but I'm not paying that price. I could buy a PSP for god sakes.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 2:05 am PT
I want it now!! Its not released in the UK until next year - easter has been banded about! Thats just crazy
Posted Nov 21, 2007 2:35 am PT
Sounds great! I hope EA get into the EU early next year.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 3:14 am PT
You should invite the kids in your neighbourhood to come in and play with you. Pay them with sweets so its on the level, and make sure they tell their parents that theyre going over to the Guerstmann house, and that you have video games and candy. Then take them on tour Jack-Black style, guide them through their inner battle with stardom and be a mentor for them for life. Maybe one has a heroin addiction during all this. Oh, and your the one-armed drummer from Def Leppard too.

God i wish it was region free.

Let us know if teh kick peddle dies actually.

Sounds rad, but I can't let myself get too excited because it's $170, and even though I do have the money, I know i don't have enough time to dedicate to make me feel like I made the right decision by shelling out that much.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 3:40 am PT
You have to earn your blisters with Rock Band, son. How much different is the Rock Band guitar from the Guitar Hero guitar? It looks way smoother, does it feel way better as well?
Posted Nov 21, 2007 4:04 am PT
The two great secrets to nearly every (if not every) musician is good time, and good ears. I was at a conference once where I got to sit in on a reporter from downbeat magazine ask Dave Holland (Bass player)about his training. He said his teacher used to sit across the room from him with a set of headphones and a click track and would just shout at him when he was playing too fast until he got the tempo's down.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 4:21 am PT
Dude, Pointsreport with drums, NOW! Come on..I said now!
Posted Nov 21, 2007 4:48 am PT
i'll get Rock Band when they add the Cowbell accessory! no, really, i suck at those games...
Posted Nov 21, 2007 4:53 am PT
Aww, I wasn't going to get it because of the lack of people to play it with and the price point, but now... I need myself some drum action!
Posted Nov 21, 2007 5:42 am PT
Yeah, I get the whole drum thing. I play Hand percussion along with the drum player, and me and him have a tendency to speed up a little too much for the guitar player/singer. But, as a side note, playing fast is way more awesome...
Posted Nov 21, 2007 6:02 am PT
170 is A LOT of money for one game. And I don't have 3 friends willing to come over and beat the game or anything.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 6:09 am PT
I so want this game. I'm gutted that its still gonna be a couple of months before it arrives in Europe.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 6:39 am PT
Do you have a 120GB drive? My drive is about full just from map packs and Live Arcade games. I'm having to buy the game on PS3 just because of Microsoft's lack of allowing me to put my own hard drive on my own console.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 6:43 am PT
i have played drums for years. i own a $4000 kit and it drives me crazy trying to play those lol.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 7:33 am PT
That 3rd parah was a great analysis! Now I know Why I feel like doing so many more beats in between during Ouendan when there are less beats to beat

And when I get RB (IF) I will surely try out the drums first!
Posted Nov 21, 2007 8:28 am PT
Not one I'll pick up because I have no rythm. Either way, Rock Band FTW!!!
Posted Nov 21, 2007 10:45 am PT
Man, if I hadn't shelled out so much cash on a ton of other games I'd have picked Rock Band up. I gave up playing in a real band some years ago. This sounds like a fun way to bring back those memories, especially at a party.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 10:53 am PT
This game being delayed in Canada makes me wish Quebec did leave Canada about a decade ago. So mad I'm not playing this now and to think its all because we need french manuals and instruction books. I preordered it and everything but its meaningless now.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 11:08 am PT
oh i need to break down and buy rock band! but i will just wait until after the rush dies down!
Posted Nov 21, 2007 11:23 am PT
I want Rock Band so badly!!! Too bad I'm spending all of my Xmas money on PC upgrades to play all of the great PC games this year.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 11:56 am PT
So is it worth it even though you don't have a group of eager friends to play with?
Posted Nov 21, 2007 1:13 pm PT
I'm hoping someone writes the Rock-Band-____-to-PC software soon. Once they do I'm definitely buying the drums. Did you see the video by the band "PowerGlove" on how to use a Guitar Hero controller for midi? The guy completely pimped it out. Look it up on youtube. their username is vgmetaldotcom.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 2:19 pm PT
I just got the game today. ^_^
I'll be spending most of my Turkey brake playing it too.
Posted Nov 21, 2007 3:54 pm PT
always good to hear my favorite critic give praise to something I'm very interested in buying. Hopefully the blisters only encourage you be more manly and less punky.

best wishes to the Thanks Giving break

before i was thinking i wasnt going to get it, but the review is changing my mind, i probably will i have enough cash
Posted Nov 21, 2007 5:42 pm PT
Playing RB need more money than playiing GH3, i think so. It can stopping sale a little.
Posted Nov 22, 2007 9:17 am PT
Good news Jeff! They've already got windows to recognize the drum kit!
Read about it here on Engadget.

I think I need rechargable batteries for the Rock Band guitar. I've been missing notes and I know it's not my fault. I haven't played through much and already it's failing? Come on, Harmonix.
Posted Nov 22, 2007 7:23 pm PT
Every time I see a new profile update and no new Points Report it makes me die a bit on the inside.
Posted Nov 22, 2007 11:28 pm PT
Jeff, I heard on the hotspot you were looking for a very yelow, very pikachui edition of a DS Lite, well, now your chance, go!

rock band is so
Posted Nov 24, 2007 8:34 am PT
Wow, you got two blisters on your pinky. how are you holding those drum sticks?? i hold them with my thumbs, my index, and middle fingers. Anywho, its kool that you are still sticking to drums - after playing the guitar hero games, i am done with the guitar/bass for now. Im playing the drums on medium for most of the songs, and hard on a couple song levels. it took me time to not look at the colors (they are very misleading) and not confuse 'red' with 'orange' (vision disorder), but im actually having good fun playing drums. if i may suggest, choking up on the drum sticks makes it easier on the hands...
Posted Nov 25, 2007 8:16 am PT
Yeah how WERE you playing the drums, exactly? You shouldn't use an intense grip on drumsticks. Anyway, keep rocking.
Posted Nov 25, 2007 8:29 am PT
Totally agree that Rock Band needs an Online World Tour. The main thing keeping me from buying it (besides the price) is consistently having a group of people to play it with, since it seems that playing with a group is by far the most fun one can have.
Posted Nov 25, 2007 4:06 pm PT
I'm a huge fan of Guitar Hero, so I was pretty excited to play Rock Band, as well. I agree with what you said about the drums, it's definitely a much different experience than I've ever had with a rhythm game before -- and very cool. For me, what hurts after extended play is my pedal foot, as opposed to my drum hand. The muscles in my calf just aren't used to that.

I must admit, I totally disagree with you about the Rock Band guitar. I absolutely hate it. I thought the wireless Les Paul from Guitar Hero III was SOOOooo much better. My fingers find the keys so much easier on harder songs -- maybe just because I'm used to it. It is kind of nice, though, that the strum bar doesn't click so loud on the Rock Band guitar.

'Grats on the Penny dash Arcade cameo.

Jeff there's a rumour that you got fired: http://kotaku.com/gaming/rumor/gamespot-editor-fired-over-kane--lynch-review-328244.php

IS THIS TRUE?!? This is the biggest WTF I've ever read on the internet.
