GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con

This week's games are Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels and Sin & Punishment. The first game eventually found its way to the US as part of that Super Mario All-Stars collection that came out on the SNES, but it's the game that the Japanese know as Super Mario Bros. 2. It's pretty tough. Sin & Punishment is a late-model N64 shooter that has things in common with games like Space Harrier and Panzer Dragoon. I have fond memories of it due to getting the import, but it never received a US release. It's totally awesome that we're finally seeing games that didn't come out in this country and I hope we see more of it.

Actually, now that S&P is out, I'm hoping that we'll start seeing games that were never actually released at all. At the last SpaceWorld convention, Nintendo showed an underwater tank game for the N64 called Echo Delta. I didn't get to spend much time with it, but it certainly seemed rad. It was scheduled to be released and the game looked mostly complete... but it got canned. It'd be super rad if Nintendo dug up the game, did whatever it needed to be fully finished, and released it.

Ah I remember S&P now. I may have to pick it up.

I agree. The virtual console is a cheap way for nintendo to bring unreleased and import games to the US market. It would be completely new content to us.

Just how many games do you think are they going to release from Japan to America though?
Posted Oct 1, 2007 10:35 am PT
Now my only question is, after they release SMB3 (when are they going to do that?!?), are they going to do the Super Mario All-Stars game too? Then you'd own all the originals and some updated remakes! It'd be kind of a waste of money, I guess...

Im really glad to hear about Sin and Punishment finally hitting the US thanks to the VC. I'd also like to see the import sequel to Earthbound as well as Airboarder 64 which was another import title that was close to coming out in the US but never made it. This is def something to look forward to for future VC updates!

Awesome. Now if they could just do the same with classic arcade games.

Ah, Sin and Punishment and Super Mario Bros. 2. Those bring back memories. Memories of things I never really knew.
Uh, anyway, here's Jeff's review of Sin and Punishment for the N64.
Yep. GameSpot used to review imports. That sure brings back memories. Memories from before I knew what GameSpot was.

never heard of S&P, but that sounds interesting.

It'd be awesome if they finally released StarFox 2! :O
Posted Oct 1, 2007 11:14 am PT
Cool. That gives me some hope that Chrono Trigger could reach the UK through VC one day.

I imported Sin and Punishment as well, and it was another fantastic Treasure effort that I couldn't get enough of back in the day. Maybe it's stupid to re-buy it since I still have the cartridge, but dammit, I think I hear the download button calling.

Sweet!

If unreleased games get released on the Wii, I would be all over Robotech: Crystal Dreams. While the fidelity and gameplay may be lacking by today's standards, I'd be keen having that title see the light of day.

Echo Delta sounds awesome
Posted Oct 1, 2007 11:43 am PT
That would be really cool if they released more games that never came out in the states. I would love to play Animal Crossing for the N64 (I know it is a random choice, but I want to!)

i remember you talking about echo delta at spaceworld...

These games came out recently here in the Europe Virtual Console for a limited time (end of September). Got Sin & Punishment but I already had The Lost Levels from All Stars hence it didn't seem necessary to get it although would have been cool nonetheless.

If we could get games that were never released it would be the best thing to ever happen. I'm also excited about games that were never released in the US actually being released on the US Virtual Console. This means we could possibly get Mother on the NES.

I never got the chance to play it on the 64, so it's a definite buy for me. And the first 64 game I ever got for the Wii! But... 12 bucks?

I'm still waiting to get my River City Ransom fix.
Posted Oct 1, 2007 12:22 pm PT
I'd play an underwater tank game. U57-BOOM!

Best week, indeed! Sa-weet!

I remember seeing stuff about SandP and my friend and I being so freaking excited for it. It's awesome that they're finally letting American Wii owners expirience something new but it's absolutely outrageous that they're charging more money when putting that game on American servers doesn't cost them a dime more than putting any other game up.

Earthbound Zero, perhaps? It never came out here, and it's done.

Actually, regular Earthbound is a million times better, so I'd rather play that.

Or, hell, just give me Mother 3 already.

I'm hoping to see the original Fire Emblem(s).... but that's probably asking for too much.
Posted Oct 1, 2007 1:35 pm PT
It's cool now that wii owners are going to be able to get games that weren't released in the US.Before that,we had battle lode runner for the TurboGrafx-16 and now they can play the big classics. The japenese version of super mario bros 2 for the nes and sin and punishment for the N64.
Posted Oct 1, 2007 1:39 pm PT
Yep the only thing the wii is good for.....the virtual console.
Posted Oct 1, 2007 1:41 pm PT
Sounds good!! I still don't have a Wii!!
Posted Oct 1, 2007 1:59 pm PT
Yeah, Fire Emblem would be cool.
Posted Oct 1, 2007 2:17 pm PT
Yeah, they need to start releasing some quality games instead of these games that sucked for their time.
Posted Oct 1, 2007 2:23 pm PT
I might have to try S&P, I've never played it before.
Posted Oct 1, 2007 2:33 pm PT
Are you saying you didn't enjoy Soccer and Urban Champion?
Posted Oct 1, 2007 2:39 pm PT
I heard alot of very good things about Sin & Punishment in the days of the N64. Now if I only had a Wii to play it.
Posted Oct 1, 2007 3:11 pm PT
Hell yes. Now just release Super Mario RPG and Earthbound, Ninty.
Posted Oct 1, 2007 3:29 pm PT
Yeah, I loved the lost levels!
Posted Oct 1, 2007 4:05 pm PT
Now let's hope this will help see the stateside release of Sweet Home. I want to play that real bad!
Posted Oct 1, 2007 5:46 pm PT
Good news all round, although there are still huge titles missing and i'm hoping they become available sooner rather than later.
Posted Oct 2, 2007 12:06 am PT
ok, but why is it 1200 points?! did I miss the memo that n64 VC games were getting a price bump or something?
Posted Oct 2, 2007 12:10 pm PT
^ import games will cost 20% more since they need to be translated and worked with a little more than regular games.
Posted Oct 2, 2007 3:32 pm PT
I want Lylat Wars now! Or is it called something else there in the States, like Star Fox 64 or something? Lylat Wars is my fav N64 game...well, there is Goldeneye. Hmm...I'm going to have to ponder that one.
