Yesterday I sat down to what I hoped would be a relaxing evening with A-Train HX.

For those on the other side of the pond, A-Train HX is a train simulation game (previously known as "A Ressha de Ikou HX") that recently got a European release. Okay, so the graphics looked last-gen, and building up a city around some train tracks might not sound like everyone's cup of tea, but I've always had a fancy for simulation games. I hoped A-Train would be like many small releases - quirky and full of charm.

I'd never played a train simulation game before, so like a good girl I read up on the manual before hand. It described the basics of building up a city from scratch. "Okay" I thought, "Now for the game!" I booted up the menu screen (with the painfully small text, even set to the largest font on a HD TV) and off I went onto the first map in the main mode.

Oh. My. God.

I cannot fully desribe my feeling of confusion and panic at the sprawling metropolis that lay before me. Instead of starting from scratch (such as Theme Park or Sim City), A-Train plonks you smack in the middle of everything. With no tutorial. No handy hints. Not so much as a cheeky nod as to how the hell you're supposed to get started. Suddenly the instructional manual was like trying to teach the metaphoircal murmurings of Ulysses using an Ikea desk assembly manual.

Before people begin to complain, I know that A-Train HX isn't mean for a quick casual game, pushing around some Thomas the Tank Engines. I was more than prepared to get my hands dirty. But it was the complete lack of help that got me. Unless you've been playing these kinds of games since the Atari, I just can't fathom how anyone can figure out what the hell to do. Why are random houses popping up next to one station, but not the other? What are these signal points all about? How do I make money? How do I buy and sell shares? Three hours later, I was still none the wiser.

It was a big disappointment for me. I know a lot of people scoffed at the idea of a Train Sim on the 360 from the get-go, but I really hoped it would prove them wrong. It's terrific to see more diverse games heading to the Xbox 360, and good on 505 Games for taking a chance. It's the utter lack of effort that galls me. How hard would it be to put in a simple, in-game tutorial? So the incredibly niche title just got even nichier. Consider me a potential fan, lost.

I've been looking at this game for a while, been on my to rent list for ages.

I saw that on the shelf last time I went into game. Shame it's a disappointment: I've been known to play sim games in the past, but I always preferred starting from scratch, or at least a theme park (Rollercoaster Tycoon ) that wasn't fully developed.

Get aboard the A-Train! Atrain was on of my favs on my amiga it is just a pity that it was always overshaddowed by the far more succesful Simcity series.

I saw that a few weeks ago when I believe it just got released and it was like, "What the hell?" Since I never seen a simulation game of that type on the 360 and probably never will again.

That is pretty crap that it doesn't have any tutorials because you would think games of that style would have something to help you out with at the beginning and this one does not.

Ive never been a fan of sim games except for GT. BTW I saw your 24 hour R6V2 gameplay marathon. Way to go!!

Sounds terribly confusing. I would be guessing it followed kind-of similar rules to Railroad Tycoon(ish), by the sound of it.

I always feel like that when I'm confronted with Microsoft Flight Simulator. There are a million and one buttons to press, and upon doing anything, the plane invariably falls out of the sky like a stone. My poor passengers.

I have never seen this game before

You should see the custom controller for the game, it's only available in Japan, which makes a ton of sense when you see the thing

Hardcore gaming for trainspotters.

thats pretty harsh, games like that scare the crap out of me
Posted Apr 10, 2008 6:29 am PT
I bet there are queues for this over in Japan they love this kind of stuff and I don't know why.

i went to the website and checked out the 720p trailer, makes it look like a lot of fun hehe

The Japanese populace is messed up in the head, for the most part. That's the only explanation I can give.

That's a shame, not that i was going to buy it anyway, but it is a shame that when people put in such a big effort to make a game good and they miss out one small thing that ruins everything.

And Railroad Tycoon was sooo much fun. Too bad this was a disappointment.

I would pay anything for the game if I could build a ilne to run the Blue Peter and the Flying Scotsman.

I have my Granda's Engineer watch and an Uncle worked in the roundhouse.

That is one of the more niche games I've seen. And the one of the most hardcore. Niche+Hardcore=What kind of userbase?

Train Simulation kind of odd idea for a video game! I am not really familiar with simulations other than a couple of games I played light years ago. I personally prefer to play games with a human protagonist.

I had no idea a game like this existed. I am intrigued, to say the least.
Posted Apr 10, 2008 1:41 pm PT
So thats what it is I saw it in GAME and I didn't have a clue what it was
Posted Apr 10, 2008 2:06 pm PT
Well that sux. Thats too bad. My favorite sim has to be RollerCoaster Tycoon, I love making all of the food stands and huge roller coasters, but no bathrooms. then the people start getting sick and puking everywhere..... I know its a sick joke, but it is funny!

The paragraph below Oh. My.God. was very poetic. Although I can't blame you. I for one would not trust a train simulator game. I would probably look at it for 8 seconds and then laugh.

Sounds like a fun game.

Well, back in the day, Railroad Tycoon was an awesome game. I played the original A-train (on Mac) and I had the same problem with it- what the heck should I do to actually grow the railroad and earn money?
It's too bad they couldn't fix this problem in the 15 years in between.
Posted Apr 11, 2008 6:31 am PT
The game had no manual?
