Let me explain and then I've got some ranting to do...
I noticed Circuit City was running a deal where you could get a 60G PS3, 5 free Blu-ray movies by mail in, and an extra PS3 Sixaxis controller for $499. Effectively making the PS3 around $359 if you take into consideration the cost of the movies and the controller. Not a bad deal at all, but still a sizable chunk of change I wasn't really planning to use on a PS3 right now.
Here's where I start feeling dirty: I bought Motorstorm and Resistance and downloaded the Ninja Gaiden: Sigma demo. All good games, but I didn't feel any real "wow" factor from them. To be fair, I didn't feel any "wow" when I first fired up the 360 eitherso I guess I should stop expecting that.
Regardless, they were good looking and pretty fun. As I looked through the PlayStation store and looked at the upcoming release list, I couldn't help but feel Sony shammed me.
Let me back up, I had no intention of buying a PS3 until a substantial price drop and more must-have games hit shelves. The reason I jumped so early, besides being a good deal, was the news that not only are they phasing the 60 gigger out, the replacement 80 gigger has incomplete backwards compatibility. It's still at 88% or thereabouts, but I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the 30 or so Xbox games I own but still can't play on the 360, and I want to get all of my old PS2 games working on the new system.
So I feel shammed basically because they enticed me to buy before I was intending to, and because they pull a price drop followed by a discontinuation and effective downgrade in future versions of the hardware. Oh and yeah... I know you can purchase HDMI cables online on the cheap, but in retail stores, the cheapest I could find was a $40 cable that was 3 feet. Which is about as long as the charging cable they put in the box for the Sixaxis, making charging while playing it worthless unless you want to sit around 2 feet from the TV.
And another thing, why can't I play Resistance in 1080i?? My largest and oldest HDTV only supports 480 and 1080i. When I fired up Resistance, it told me the optimal resolution for that game is 720p. Since that set doesn't do 720p, I went ahead and played anyway at the settings I had made in the console settings. After thinking to myself "These graphics really aren't very good," I checked the resolution on the TV, and sure enough it had set me at 480.So in order to play my PS3 games I have to go into the bedroom and play on a 26" LCD that does 720p. Grrr... it does look great in 720p but it's on a screen half the size I am used to gaming on. (UPDATE) Apparently most of the games out right now for the PS3 won't display in 1080i... ![]()

So far only Sigma has ran at 1080, and of course the Dashboard/Media Crossbar does too. Yay.
And criminy this sucker's heavy and puts out a boatload of heat! Thankfully the fan is substantially quieter than the 360's fan, but it does get hot regardless.
Oh and what is going on with loading times and installations? Does every game have to install on the HDD before it's playable? I thought that was the point of console gaming, that you can just pop a disc in and go... apparently times are changing.
*sigh* I don't mean to be pessimistic, but I guess I just was expecting all of the fanboy rants I hear in System Wars daily to be exaggerations, which some are and others are right on the mark.
Those things being said, I am optimistic about the future of the PS3 and the games it will have within the next few months and years. Heavenly Sword looks great, and now I don't have to wait to play Haze. Little Big Planet looks interesting as does Infamous and Uncharted but please don't mention MGS4... I am evidently the only person on the planet who can't stand the MGS series. It's a long story. ![]()
In addition to gaming, I have a one year old son and old Disney movies in HD is a nice bonus. (XBL only gets the new ones) However, I couldn't locate any of the old Disney BR discs at any local retailer... Have they just not been released yet on BR?
So yeah, I'm sure I'll have more positive things to say in the future, but I had to get this out for the time being. I feel they are valid complaints especially for a high end piece of hardware. But many will likely shout "teh bias Mod!!!"and that's fine. People who really know me know what kind of person I am... and that's good enough for me.

I ordered it online, and then picked it up at a local CC store.
Ellipson:
Fairly large, I haven't checked exact sizes yet, but after playing 2 games and two demos, my HDD size is at 46GB.
A thing I wanted to point out below:
You Wrote: "Oh and what is going on with loading times and installations? Does every game have to install on the HDD before it's playable? I thought that was the point of console gaming, that you can just pop a disc in and go... apparently times are changing."
You don't have to install the game, you can just pop it in and play.

Don't worry, I believe Sony is working on it thru firmware updates. Give it some time.
Anyway, I can wait for the "value" pack (€630 isn't exactly what I'd call value, no matter what the pack contains), or import a 60GB version from Canada for €390. If I were to put Resistance, Motorstorm and an extra controller into the mix, I'd still be saving money over the "value pack". Having an American PS3 would also help a lot as PAL PS2 games are expensive and hard to find these days, Region 2 DVDs are too expensive, Blu Ray movies are too expensive, and PS3 games are region free.
Given your stance on backwards compatibility and positive outlook on the future releases, I think you made the right move in buying one now. Congrats on the purchase.
I'm not planning on returning it, so the UPC isn't a big deal. Plus I already have the HDDVD player for the 360 and about 7 HDDVD movies plus the ones I have watched thru XBL.
It's just poor planning and cost cutting. You can't explain this flaw away, try as you might.
and as far as disney not being sure on which format, im pretty sure disney is part of blu ray and has shares and is backing it. just because they havent released snow white or something doesnt mean they are leaving the format, pirates 1 and 2 already came out and 3 will this fall.fox has always backed hd dvd i believe. but blu ray will kill hd dvd, its the sad truth. blockbuster already chose sides, and most movie studios did as well, and not to mention the biggest most profitable movie studio on the planet right now which is sony.
new formats dont blow out of the gate, when people realise that they can only rent blu ray movies at blockbuster(dont give me that online rental rant cus all those companies combined dont pull what BB does) and they get their shiny new HDTVs for christmas or for the football season starting soon(sony tvs sell well too, i can see what they meant when they said they wanna be in our livingrooms, they are making everything now) the blu ray players will sell more and become mass produced and as cheap as dvd players to make.

I have a question, though: what kind of memory footprint are those games leaving on your HD? You mentioned some kind of installation process... I'm thinking about getting one too, and I'm wondering if I should make sure I have extra scratch for a bigger laptop HD to stick in it.
